I'm new to playing table top games I have read the book and I don't understand how many points go in to the character creation.
trouble with character creation
It isn't "points" so much as each species lists XP. You can buy characteristics with that XP.
You can also buy talents and skill ranks, but it is usually best to raise characteristics to 3 or even 4 at creation. After that they goup much more slowly.
The book isn't the best when it comes to organization and common sense descriptions.... :/
However, look under the Species/Races descriptions and you'll see (page 43...) starting XP. Most are at 100, humans get 110 and two free non-career skill ranks, and some races get 90.
Depends on a couple of factors:
1) The species. Some have more, some have less - humans have 110, twleks have 90 (I think - I'm Away from Book).
2) How much Obligation/Duty/Morality you have. More Obligation means more points to work with, and how much obligation you can have depends on your group size. But generally you can net yourself up to 10 points by burdening yourself.
3) Generosity of the GM. Sometimes GMs will start a game out with a boost to points, usually spent after character creation.
So really, the final point total hinges on a couple of your decisions.
Edited by DesslokI agree it's a tad confusing, as some things (like spending XP on Characteristics) is for character-generation only.
And Desslok, I thought you could only get +10/15 from Duty or Obligation? I know you can take extra for both XP and credits, but I didn't think you could double-up on the +10 option... Some people allow you to take both the +5 and +10 option.

It very well might be - my book is not within arms reach and I was going from memory.
thanks that helps the book was super confusing.
Check this link. It's a little outdated but really helps you get your head around character creation.

It varies based on party number IIRC. If you don't then, with obligation, a party of 4+ can end up ob-locked from the start.
might want to read it again
+1
I bought the book, read through it cover to cover, then lent it to a friend. After a month, I got it back, and reread it. 2nd time around it filled in the gaps and was a breeze after that.
The Generator From The Another Character Generator WiL Help Walk You Through It. But The Gist Is You Get XP Based In Your Character Species. For More XP, You Can Raise Your Obligation By 5 For 5, 10 For 10, And 15 For 15. A Stat Costs What Your Buying X10. So To Get Your Brawn From 1 To 2 Costs 20 Then To Get It From 2 To 3 Costs 30. The Costs Do Stack. A Career Skill CostsWhat You're Buying X5. So One Rank Costs 5. Two Ranks Costs 10. Again The Cost Stacks. If Its A Non Career Skill, Add 5 ToThe Cost For Each Rank. A New Specialization Costs The Number Of Specializations You Have (INCLUDING THE NEW ONE), Times 10. So If You're Getting A Second, 20 Points. If You're Getting A Third, 30 Points. Add 10 If Its A Non Career Specialization.
My RecommendAtion 1) Get The Program From Another Character Generator Thread. 2) Buy Stats. This Is Basically The Only Time You're Going TO Be Able To Raise Stats This Easy. After This Point, You Need To Get The Dedication Talent Which Is Located At The Bottom Of Trees, So You Need To Buy Your Way Through An Entire Tree, Plus The Talent. This Can Easily Cost 150 XP, And Then you Can Only Raise One Once, Before You Need To Start Through An Entire New Specialization. Skills You Can Pick IP In Game. Specializations You Can Pick Up In Game. Stats, Buy Them now
