I'm looking for a cheap voice modulator to do stormtrooper voices during my Edge of the Empire game. The good ones for cosplay are expensive. The cheap "voice changing" masks apparently don't really change your voice.
Anyone have experience with a cheap ($10-ish) modulator that works decent? Doesn't have to come in a mask.
Alternatively, anyone know software that will do the same thing in real-time? I will have my laptop with me at the session, running music and other sound effects. Be cool if I could also go into "Hutt" mode, or droid-talk, or anything else Star Wars sounding.
Cheap voice modulators
Here's how I handle it. Not exactly what you asked for, but maybe it will help.
First, I downloaded this
soundboard
app to my 7" tablet and paired it to a bluetooth speaker.
Then I filled it with various MP3 sounds I downloaded from the internet. Droid sounds. Hutt sounds. A few rodian sounds.
Whenever an NPC of that type is speaking to them, I speak in a slightly different voice (fast and excited for a droid, low and grumbly for the Hutt), and play the soundboard in the background. That gives them the impression of the NPC talking while still being able to understand me.
You Can Get An App On The Google Playstore For Your.phone
I have a dumb phone and no tablet, though I can probably borrow an iPad. I like the idea of the background sounds under my own voice though. Would probably want to do that even with a modulator.
I'm sure there are similar apps for laptops, if you have that. The trick is to keep the background sound just high enough for your players to hear, but low enough that it doesn't drown you out. If it's low enough and your voice is kind of similar to the soundboard sound, your players' subconscious brains will sort of 'meld' the sounds together.
Cupping your hands over your mouth works too.... just saying...

We've been talking into empty cans for our space marines in Deathwatch, at least when we wear our helmet. I'm wanting something that's, well... not that.
And I've seen some voice changing apps out there, where you can do male to female, alien-sounding voices, robots, etc. Wondering if anyone has experience with them and how well they work?

There are plenty of voice-changing apps for iOS devices, but regretfully my experience with them has not been good. I have yet to find one that I can recommend.
If you find a good solution, please let us know!

I haven't tried it myself, but it seems to have everything that you are looking for
Okay, I just downloaded a trial version of MorphVox for the Mac. It actually seems to work reasonably well!
Thanks, EW!
Oh, and note that this same group has an iOS app called MorphBox. Haven’t tried it yet, but I definitely will give it a shot.

If you want to simulate the voices of Storm Troopers, note that the MorphVox “Radio Chatter” voice is a good start. It’s in the “Deep Space Voices” collection.
Yes, I’m playing with it right now.

Pretty much this. Try it out yourself and see if you can good at imitating it yourself.
If i have some NPCs that are going to have a major scene, or a monolouge, i usually channel a character from something I have seen and spend the week practicing it. With enough practice you can get pretty good at it without some facny app or gadget
