Is Hull Upgrade worth it?

By cvtheoman, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I'm playing in an epic multiplayer battle tomorrow, and I have 3 points to play around with in my squad. I was thinking I would add HU to my defender (Rex w/ HLC & Pred), but I'm not sure if that one hull point would be a big difference.

The other option is to use it for crew on my Dogfighting Shuttle (OGP w/ HLC, Engine, Adv Sensors & RCaptive).

Thoughts?

How about an Ion Pulse Missile. If your facing a CR90 or Transport a well timed IPM could throw a wrench at their energy allocation strategy.

It also may prove to be useful slowing down one of the other key players.

An extra hull point on a 3 agility ship can be a huge increase in durability.

I would probably put stealth device on rexlar for those points. That forces the opponent to gun for him early.

Or throw a fleet officer on your OGP, with adv sensors you can immediately clear the stress

Gonna take a shot in the dark here outside of your 3pts you've got 12 not yet mentioned.

But upgrade the AP to "Night Beast" or "Winged Gundark"? I've had NB as MVP more times than my opponents care to remember and Gundark because he never gets mentioned.. poor guy.

Thanks for all the advice guys!

It's a league thing, so

a) there has to be an AP; and

b) there will be no huge ships

Rex will be focusing for most of his actions, either for attack, defense, or crits; therefore I don't plan on taking Ion Pulse Missiles or any other ordnance.

I'm really more looking to keep Rex alive, so forcing my foes to gun for him is really the opposite of what I want.

I considered Fleet Officer, but I want to keep the OGP stress-free for 0-maneuvers or hard turns. That's also why I didn't use the 3pts to upgrade to Yorr.

Keep it coming, guys! Anyone else play TIE/Ds and have some experience to weigh in?

I don't think you can go wrong with Hull if you have 3 points to spend. Shield Upgrade can either work or not. At least hull you know is going to require your opponent to put 1 more damage on Brath.

Also don't forget Lone Wolf. Depending on the rest of your list, it can help keep Brath alive a bit longer. Of course it is conditional and not steady like predator.

I really like Lone Wolf, and put it on Rex for my Defender/Decimator list, but

a) there will be a ton of ships on each side, so I don't want to count on being out of the way; and

b) each Rebel player will have to play at least one Bandit Z-95, which Predator will eat up.

aside: I won't be able to call the Rebel players "scum" after wave 6 without causing confusion...

Knowing the rest of the criteria and how you plan to operate makes things more interesting.

Vader (Crew) - Having him on the Shuttle might make it a higher priority target making more use of RC. Also combined with the HLC you have a potential 5 hits on a target. Of course with that many points invested on an OGP you'll want to use that Coup de Grâce sparingly.

Recon Specialist - Increases survivability on the Shuttle and still leaves you with a Focus for attacking.

Proton Rockets - Since you said you would be Focusing with Brath, one thing to note is that PRockets do not require you to spend the Focus for the attack. You just need it to trigger the card.

Fleet Officer - Is probably your best option for 3pts. as it allows you to Brath to use his focus to convert hits and the FO-Focus to flip damage face up.

Yorr - his ability is a "May" function so it might be worth your while to upgrade here for +2PS and an ability that might prove to be useful if a situation for it occurs.

Also Ruthlessness may be something to consider instead of Predator if there's going to be a lot of ships on the field the added +Splash can prove to be quite strong. Although it would still leave you with what to do on your last 3 points.

Yeah, Vader's a no-go with that many points in. EU+AS make this shuttle a Dogfighter, not a Doomshuttle.

I feel like this will be of limited usefulness. The extra defensive focus will only matter for 25% odds on one shot per round. If I were going that route, I'd be more interested in Flight Instructor, even with the extra point, because it holds all the time, and against all the Bandit's I'll be facing, could reroll blanks too.

Proton Rockets - Since you said you would be Focusing with Brath, one thing to note is that PRockets do not require you to spend the Focus for the attack. You just need it to trigger the card.

I completely forgot the Rockets were Focus and not TL! *facepalm*

However, I'm not sure the 1 extra Attack die at Range 1 (since Defenders already are at 4At at R1) for only one shot is worth it. Do you think it would make that big a difference?

Fleet Officer - Is probably your best option for 3pts. as it allows you to Brath to use his focus to convert hits and the FO-Focus to flip damage face up.

I originally wrote this off for the Stress, since I will want to do a lot of red maneuvers with the shuttle anyway. However, giving Rex 2 Foci could be nice. [ Kinda wish the Defender had an /E2 title, for Recon Spec. ] The trick would be to keep Rex in R2 while keeping the shuttle at distance to use HLC and keep ships in its arc.

Yorr - his ability is a "May" function so it might be worth your while to upgrade here for +2PS and an ability that might prove to be useful if a situation for it occurs.

I think one of the other options is worth more than the potential of occasionally using Yorr.

Interesting idea. I'll consider this for other builds, but knowing there will be so many Bandits there makes me want to see how good Predator can be.

Really appreciate the ideas, guys. I don't mean to be argumentative, but I want to think this through, so feel free to push back on my thoughts too!
