3D printed maneuver template holders - interested?

By haslo, in X-Wing

There recently was this awesome thread about LEGO maneuver template holders . I thought the idea was awesome, but immediately figured I could make one I like even better by 3D-printing it. The first design didn't work at all (it fell backward because the balance point was too far back, and the templates didn't hold because they didn't have enough support), but the second one I like.

Here it is, printed in translucent blue-ish plastic. The lines you see are the internal support structures that the 3D printer made.

Here's the OpenSCAD file, if you want to print one of your own. There's currently a minor caveat - because the holes go all the way through and there's no base plate, you need to hold the templates when you pick up the holder or they fall out.

What I am interested in now: Is there interest for ordering template holders like this printed through Shapeways? If so, I'll change the model a bit to add a base plate to the model itself and maybe make it somewhat hollow inside (because of the different 3D printing method that Shapeways uses), and make them available there.

I'd say give it a shot, and see what the costs are of it on Shapeways. That will make or break the decision

That is sweet. I second the add it to shapeways and check the price. I saw a sweet card holder on there I want and I'd love to add this to an order if it didn't cost too much.

OK, will do :) I'll try to keep the price as low as possible (thus the hollowing out bit).

Great work!

Would it be possible to integrate a (sleeved) damage deck holder into the design? A bit like the one from Corsec .

I realize this might require a redesign of the entire model but it would add a cool completeness to the concept.

edit: looking at the model again I imagine that storage/transport could become an issue (our massive fleets take up so much space there isn't any room left for cool new ideas :) ) Would it be possible to make it sleeker/lower to easier fit most storage solutions?

I took the liberty of doing this:

Ive redone it and made it more hollow. This way the price is reduced to a third at Shapeways. Cool model, you can download it and upload it wherever you want.

Thanks, that's really neat :) I think it's important that the holes go further down than that though - I'm not sure whether the longer templates would be stable with such short holes to fit into.

But that's definitely very close to what I had in mind! I'm living in Switzerland, at work right now, I can get back to the model in a few hours :P

I've reworked the model rather completely, and made the holder available for beta:

I ordered one to see whether they print it at all and how it works out when they do, but that won't arrive in Switzerland before Feb 2nd-4th. If you want to take the risk, feel free to order one for yourself :)

Could you pleeeeease take some 240 grit sandpaper to that thing?

Too bad I just ordered mine from CorSec. Over 3 weeks ago, lawl.

i would be interested, if the cost is reasonable. same with a card holder, would love one of those too, again, so long as the price is reasonable. please pm me with pricing and options.

It's available right here for $40:

I can't really go lower with the price. As it is, I barely have any markup on it - and just for preparing it for Shapeways from the thing I already created for myself, I spent 2-3 hours rebuilding the whole thing. (Yes, the model by melminiatures would've been cheaper because it uses less material, but it does so at the expense of depth of the holder holes - and I think that would lead to the effect that my first prototype had: the templates fell out.)

About the card holder - I started making one once, and then tried it out, and it didn't work at all for me. So that's a backlog thing for now I'm afraid, sorry.

I'll let you know when mine arrives at the beginning of February, if you want to wait to be certain that it works before ordering, or if you want to see how it looks first.

Most of the structure you see is because it's printed in translucent plastic and you see through the wall into the supporting cell structures within. Shapeways wouldn't have that because they 3D print with powder, not by extrusion deposition like my model was made. That's also why even after having made a successful print with my own printer (with took 6-7 hours), I'm not certain that it'll actually work with Shapeways - not until I receive the one I ordered.

But, I'll give sanding a go :D
