Hey guys,
I've seen a few comments recently about Wedge not being up to scratch in the current meta, would anyone care to explain?
I always thought his pilot ability and pilot skill would keep him relevant.

A PS9 pilot with 3 attack and a great ability is always going to be relevant to some extent. I think what most people who think he doesn't fit into the current meta don't like about him is that he can't be made nearly as tough as Corran if he's the second ship in a two ship list and he's too expensive by the time you give him an EPT and Engine Upgrade to fit in a third ship.
I would agree - he's very good. The main issue is probably that relatively unmanouvrable heavy fighters have trouble with things like phantoms - so an engine upgrade is a very, very good idea, which is expensive.
Wedge would be so much better if X-wings had barrel roll. I think the key to Wedge might be to resist the temptation of adding any upgrades. He is what he is and if he goes past 30 points he´s too expensive for how fast he can go down. If there are other important offensive units in the squad, Wedge can probably be handled well enough to live and pay for himself. Back in the day people would use Biggs to protect him, but 54 points is a lot to pay for 2 X-wings with all the ships available in today´s game.
He hasn't got a turret so he's useless against phantoms!
/sarcasm
Played against wedges x-wing recently...still gives me fits..so yeah hes still a good ship
Biggest issue with high PS X-wings at the moment is the lack of a relocation action (either Barrel roll or Boost). So high PS doesn't necessarily mean so much. You cannot react to your opponent's moves. X-wings and Z-95s are currently the only small base ships without an easy way to counter manoeuvre lists. (i.e. No turret or relocation action). Z-95s are cheap. X-wings are not. (Basic X is 9pts more than basic Z-95 and get 1 hull and 1 attack...)
I think eventually we may see a title for X-wing that gives it a bit more activation phase manoeuvrability. R7-T1 is the beginning of this potential buff period.
I think part of the issue here is exactly the fact that so many ships can now relocate as an action. Arc-dodging is becoming too much of a big thing.
Well, you could pair a Fat Han withbWefge, expert handling, r7-t1 and a shield upgrade for a relocating Wedge. That might be quite effective actually.
A lack of relocation option is what currently hurt Wedge. Stay on Target and R2 can help, but then you are stuck without action to shoot, unless you bring an helper, which then tax you even more to make him relevant. Then there is the fact that an X-Wing is not that hard to destroy. I still hate to see him on the other side of the table, but he's definetly harder to fit into a list.
I think the Decimator-heavy meta might also contribute. Here you have a very common ship at the moment and Wedge´s special ability simply goes to waste.
yeah,
When he's on the other side of the table I make him target number 1.
That to me means he's relevant but the fact he dies fairly easy means he might be costed to high.
Panic...
In part it's still carry over from the Phantom release. X wings just can't reliably keep it in arc. He probably should see more table time (especially against the bugger ships that are much easier to keep in arc)
I find Wedge reliably kills phantoms for me. Now it takes a properly set up astroid field and initiative. Cracken VI, Wedge, Biggs, and a Blue with FCS. makes wedge a TL/Focus set up.
Then again I still fly 4 Blues and a Bandit against phantoms and won a somewhat large tournament recently.
Edited by Acheron143wedge is awesome, take initiative and scare the pants off phantoms.
Wedge eliminates C3P0.
Following Michiel's Rogue Squadron video list-
The few roles that Wedge had Wes is more reliable, a bigger threat and against most opponents draws less fire. Wedge never had a big piece of play but Wes ate about 60% of it.
Need a "cheap" Phantom killer?
Wedge w/ VI, R7T1

I think this is a great, and often overlooked, point. He has an ability I'm not sure FFG would even print anymore, at least not for the cost we pay for him, and he works well without any upgrades and without even much of a supporting combo: you just need to accompany him with something that will challenge your opponent's targeting priority.
wedge is awesome, take initiative and scare the pants off phantoms.
Wedge doesn't scare a PS9 phantom. Especially if you take initiative. You let them see where you go and then they get to move. Any player who leaves Wedge with a shot on the Phantom is playing it wrong.
The fix for Wedge is simple. His Pilot ability becomes. When attacking reduce the defender's agility by 1. The defender does not roll additional defence dice at range 3.

Yeah I have a list with Jake, Corran and originally Wedge. I've since replaced him with Luke. But Wedge even at PS11, lacks a barrel roll or boost, which makes his PS less effective.
It doesn't matter all that much if he moves last, when he can't adjust to what Echo or Whisper has done with their decloak.
Nailed it, Vorpal.
Wedge definitely doesn't "need" anything to his base card. That's why upgrade slots exist...and smart players.
I'm telling you: R7T1. Underated. Underpriced.
Edited by Red WinterThe issue is R7-T1 is a defensive upgrade not an offensive one.

Sometimes hard to take initiative when most Phantom builds come in at 98 or even 97 points.

I find of prefer VI + Wes to Wedge now. Stripping a token off an opponent is sometimes downright dirty. I love when I shoot someone who focused, then didn't roll a focus in the defensive roll. Basically wasted the action.
The issue is R7-T1 is a defensive upgrade not an offensive one.
How so? It allows Wedge to reposition late and acquire a target lock.
As to the Phantom point, if Wedge is aiming at a Phantom, he is threatening it. That TIE Phantom is suddenly evading like a TIE Fighter.

I have it on Luke in my list. I'd go back to wedge but I like the survivability of Luke, and having an extra point so I can give him VI.
I've found it can be a quite handy upgrade for offensive use. Lets you boost forward putting you in range 1 rather than range 2, at PS10 or 11, and that means a decent chance of whatever you're shooting not shooting back.
Dead = 0 DPS. (A MMO thing, but applies here.)
Also as you point out, Wedge vs a Cloaked phantom is no different than any other 3 attack ship firing on a Tie Fighter or interceptor.
