I'm struggling really hard with flying A Wings. Can anyone give me advice.
Struggling with A Wings
What part are you struggling with?
I would suggest practicing on a board littered with asteroids.
yeah,
How many A-Wings?
Are you using them as flankers or blockers or as your main wave?
Panic...
Yeah we need some more info here.
If running Prototypes, using them as blockers is quite effective, by flying them in front big targets, mainly Big Ships or even heavy maneuverable ships like a phantom / soontir.
If Running Green Squadrons loaded with ept's and the like. Run them either as flankers or you can even run them as fast jousters. Their ability to turtle up in front of a gun line is really quite effective in my personal opinion, you really just need to judge what targets in your list your opponent will go for. I really love PtL on my Greens with either Predator / Out Maneuver. If flanking just pay attention to what the opponent is doing and if it really is worth flanking. I typically run my list in formation all the time and break off the awing right before the first engagement to get behind them and be a nuisance.
XYBA (Say is my formation) When I go to turn into the enemy I will 3 Bank the X, 2 Bank the Y and 1 Bank the B and 5 straight the A, Hoping my formation will be in range of taking shots off at the enemy and either getting out of the arcs with the a wing / Turtle up making them choose to waste shots on an awing or go for my harder hitting units. (This is just one of my squads I run with great efficiency.
Named Pilots on the other hand are a complete different type of beast. Each one fly's entirely differently.
Gemmer - Loaded with a SD (Stealth Device) you want to fly close with the enemy without bumping into anything. I think Gemmer takes the most skill to fly because he's right in the middle of PS and his ability makes you want to fly up close for a range one shot which could be a horrible idea if the entire team can hit you. With Gemmer you need to flank or use him for 1 on 1's.
Arvel - He is super fun to fly because you could care less where he ends up... as long as its not in the middle of a firing zone. You really need to plan his moves ahead of time and really focus on a target with him to keep him effective and busy in the game. If your really good at guessing your opponents maneuvers Arvel is really easy to fly. Or just fly him with a squad with lots of control. (I realize now what I said in the first sentence completely contradicts the second but I won't change it Arvel is really fun to fly).
Jake - Jake is an awesome pilot and has such great maneuverability that he will take a little practice flying him as well as when to use his barrel roll / boost. I like him with PtL for mad actions so you can be a mini Soontir Fel. You basically fly him like a tanky Interceptor. He can arc dodge like a monster and turtle up if hes in fire fight.
Tycho - Is the stress machine. He loves stress abilities - Experimental Interface and Daredevil, gives Tycho a K turn with out having to K turn and still giving him actions. You can fly him like a mix between Gemmer and Jake.Since he is going to be the most expensive A wing in your Arsenal (Assuming using full Upgrades, PtL, DD, EI). You need to flank, You cannot rely on Turtling with Tycho to save your ass (Unless absolutely necessary).
Hope this helps you. Once you understand the Limitations of your Ship it really just comes down to how well you can fly it against an opponent. I see a lot of people saying to practice flying with asteroids and doing these test like missions. In my opinion if you want to learn how to fly A -wings is just to fly them. Play lots of games and don't give up on a list if you have a bad round of dice or luck (Hitting an asteroid) getting Experience will take time but you can't expect to fly a fragile fast ship without losing some in the process. Anyways I wouldn't say I'm a pro X wing player I don't plan out my Maneuvers 3 turns in advance I just play what I see and what I think will work with the situation I'm givien and hope the dice are in my favour.
*Edits - Mad grammar fixes. It was early in the morning and I didn't have my coffee.*
Edited by GuitarqueroCould a lone Tycho work with PTL, predator and Prockets wirk alongside a Fat Han?
No. Two attack dice are not enough for half your list.
I disagree. Two dice attacks, especially when coupled with a Procket attack, are fine. I would suggest dropping predator for VI though if that's your goal. I play lots of Pyscho Tycho w/ Prockets (38points) as half my list, and I don't find myself lacking in firepower since he's so good at getting in R1 (and out of arc). But if you're not going with Pyscho Tycho, then you might as well go with VI since it's important to move last to get in R1.

My cuurent favorite A-wing build is this:
Green Squadron Pilot
Chardaan Refit
Opportunist
Opportunist lets you stress yourself to roll an extra attack dice, if your target has no focus or evade tokens.
This gives you a ship with a total of 21 points that can stress itself to roll an extra attack dice. People tend to freak out when a a-wing closes on them and rolls 4 dice. Right now im running 2 of these, Gemmer with same build and Wes Jansen to strip focuses and evades from your target.
With a-wings having so many greens I have found that I almost always take the stress for extra punch.

Absolutely not. If you go up against anything with an evade action your Tyco will be worthless. They spend one action halving your attack output and then just need one evade result to blank 50% of your list. It doesn't matter if you roll two crits every single turn you can't do ant damage period.

Note what I just said about how easy it is to get in R1 and therefore get 3 attack dice. And most of the time it can be done with DareDevil (and EI), leaving you two actions to TL+F or F+E if it's a turret (because why would Tycho ever be in arc?) to make the 3 dice count. Not to mention the first time you do this, you're dropping 5 dice - plenty to really change the flow of the game.
Edited by CarpatheonI'm thinking of trying this for my next game:
Tycho Celchu (26)
Push the Limit (3)
Proton Rockets (3)
Daredevil (3)
Experimental Interface (3)
A-Wing Test Pilot (0)
Green Squadron Pilot (19)
Opportunist (4)
Chardaan Refit (-2)
Wes Janson (29)
Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)
Total: 100

I don't know if I like running Wes without any upgrades though, and I'm pondering dropping the bandit to bulk up Wes with R2D2, engine upgrade, and a good EPT

I could see Fat Han Tycho being alright because people will probably ignore Tycho and go for the juicy Han, and if they go for Tycho your han will just roll over the board. Because of Tychos High Maneuverability and moving last if you put VI on him, he makes a great flanker to get behind the enemy and take out the squishy targets. It never hurts to try out a build and see how it works against a plethora of lists to get a feel for its strengths and weaknesses. Theorizing and planning on something before a game I find doesn't really help you in the long run. You will have no idea how a list holds up until you fly it for yourself.
Of course there are more sure things for the amount of points you'll be spending on a decent tycho build. But that's what the joy of list building is, finding something you like to fly and you feel comfortable with. If everyone just ran the best list and best use of points ships in the game, it would get boring real fast. There's more to the game than just attack and defense. There are so many variables in this game you can't theorize or plan for everything.
