Using huge ships outside cinematic play

By Rapscallion84, in X-Wing

I've been eyeballing the Rebel Transport (which is currently £35 on Amazon) but I'm afraid I wouldn't get to use anything except the X-wing and its pilots/upgrades. This goes double for the Tantive IV pack - I'm desperate for a reason to buy it. I'm a little iffy on the rules for huge ships, but I know they use their own epic point format.

What happens if you want to fly this transport (or a corvette) against a team of Imperials? Is there some way of converting epic points to regular points, so that a wing of Imperial ships can gang up on a transport and its fighter escort?

My worry is that this ship is only usable in cinematic play, so it'll basically stay on my shelf most of the time. I had a quick look through whatever documentation I could find, but was unable to see any rules for flying huge ships in a regular game where the Imperials cannot field their own huge ship (until the raider is released).

Any clarification would be appreciated

The huge ships have both epic and standard points. If your opponent is happy for you to field a huge ship in a standard game then the only problem you'll have is fitting one out within the 100 point limit. Well, that and hitting anything star fighter sizes with your main weapon if you go for the CR-90...

:)

I've played a 100 point game against a Corvet myself, it was a lot of fun.

The Epic ships both have their own rules, missions & points limits.

that said...

There is absolutely nothing to stop you messing around with the Huge ships in casual games, so long as both players are happy to do so. I've personally played the Rebel Transport at 150 points, and it's a lot of fun and an interesting change of pace from playing 100 point games all the time.

You can also use the Transport and Corvette as obstacles in place of asteroids or debris fields.

edit: plus of course, the X-Wing cards & upgrades in the Transport back are WELL worth the investment.

just play an epic game with a lower points total if you wish, say 200 per side. Until the raider arrives, you will be facing 200 points of imperial small and large base ships against your transport plus escorts. Very do-able and fun.

I like to use the Epic ships as Obstacles. It's great to throw one down and watch the other guy face and the entire center of the board is blocked by a CR-90. :)

The scenarios are fun too, I don't know why no one else seems to enjoy them. If FFG would put more love into the scenario side I think more people would find a desire to buy epic ships. I have run to the epic ships in smaller sce battles and they are fine. 150 points is the lowest I would go because it takes at least 110 to kit out the CR-90 to be any good at close range. The transport plays fine at the 120-150 point range also.

Epic points are used to limit how many epic ships you may field.

The standard Epic game uses 5 epic points and 300 regular points.

Apart from their epic point level, three for the Corvette and two for the Transport, they also cost regular points, as do their upgrades.

While the Rebel player would then spend about 100, 140 points on the Corvette and the rest on escort fighterrs, the Imperials have 300 points to spend on fighters alone.

That's interesting. I must have completely missed that the huge ships also have a regular points budget. For some reason it didn't occur to me to look at the actual cards in the set, I just read the Epic play rules!

I assume that the huge ship points are balanced in the normal way, so that a 90 points of corvette + 110 points of fighters would be equal to 200 points of small/large Imperial ships. Is this correct?

I say do whatever you want with it.

I bought a Tantive IV just because it's cool. I wanted to find ways to use it and realized that there is a local board game and RPG con in my home town. If I ran 3 games, I got in free. So, I designed 205 pts. vs 205 pts all with my own ships. I called a bunch of my college friends that I don't see often that know of X-wing, but don't play (unless with me) and we had a Saturday of drinking beer and rolling dice. It was great. Next, I was at the local game store. There were a couple regulars around, but I also managed to grab a slew of guys who never played before to try the game. 3 vs 4 on a big table with a lot of ships. All generics. It was just a lot of fun.

The weekend game and I ran my game. I got a couple of regular players out of it and had a blast. It was a lot of fun to play with new people and most of them had never played the game before.

I think that you just make up whatever it is you want to do and run a game with it. I tend to prefer generic pilots as it's just cooler, but it's not bad to use special pilots. I've found people just forget about their abilities and it gets complicated. It's great for new players and fun for vets. From my experience, I used mostly Tie Fighter and a few other ships, but no Phantoms and only one Bomber. The Rebels won 4 out of 5 games. Others in my area played with all the toys and they brought Phantoms, Interceptors, and Bombers loaded out. They state that the Tantive dies too easy. So, it's all in the ships you fly. I think you should put some parameters around it.

If you want any of the Epic ships, you get them. Will you play them? It all depends on what you do with them. I find X-wing is an awesome game...especially if you move beyond the 100 pt tournament death match. Have some friends that are burnt out on the game? Try this. Have some friends that haven't played the game? Try this. Want to get more people involved in the game? Try this.

If you have enough ships on your own, make up a few battles that will be fun and be ready to play whenever you want. Show up for game night and have an odd number of players? Throw out the epic game on the table and see who wants to join.

There are rules for using the big ships as objects to!

I'm not really fond of paying £56 on the corvette and £36 on the transport to use them as obstacles. If I wanted an obstacle that large, I would put my size 10s on the table! But the answers on this thread have given me more courage to pull the trigger on these. I have already ordered the Slave-1 and Falcon (both newly restocked) for £19.99 each (great price!) with free delivery. I could have the two huge ships by tomorrow on Amazon prime delivery, so that's kinda tempting....

Just not sure my current Imperials would stand a chance against 200 or 300 point Rebels with huge ships.

I hold the corvette on my lap while I watch premier league football. Does that count?

For my demo game, I did:

Rebels
1)CR-90 w/ 2 x quad lasers
2)Rookie w/ Proton Torpedoes
Red Squadron w/ Proton Torpedoes
3)Rookie w/ Proton Torpedoes
Red Squadron w/ Proton Torpedoes

Imperials
1)Tie Bomber w/ Concussion Missile + Cluster Missile
Academy Pilot
Obsidian Pilot
2)Lambda w/ Heavy Laser Cannon
Academy Pilot
Obsidian Pilot
3)2 x Tie Advanced w/ Concussion Missiles
4)2 x Tie Interceptors

Each person runs 50 pts, except the person who runs the Tantive IV. When there are duplicates of the same ship for the same person, make sure they are of different PS levels. This way you don't get one guy who has a ton of Academies hold up the game as he moves them all. It runs MUCH smoother this way.

If you have the lists together ahead of time, it helps make it happen. "Say, want to try that Epic game I've been kicking around?".

Fighters are more effective against the Corvet than you'd think. Decimators on the other hand die fast and hard against them.

That just made me choke on my tea and violently eject it over my desk, thanks for that!

This is interesting. Well, I'm sold on the idea. Just ordered the corvette and transport in addition to the multitude of other ships I've ordered in the weeks since Christmas.

I mean seriously, someone buys you the core set and two extra ships for Christmas and then you blow some £200 on all the additional stuff! I did warn my girlfriend that this would happen, however she is very supportive of my addition so that makes me feel better.

The Bolt Action scene dried up in my area until it was just two of us playing the same armies against each other. I saw some people playing X-wing again, which hadn't happened since that scene dried up a year before. I told my friend that I had the game and brought it next week. We had a good time and he enjoyed the game. I didn't see him for 2 weeks and when I did, he had dropped over $200 on the game! He even had the Tantive IV. Turns out he's a Star Wars re-enactor and in the 501st Storm Trooper unit.

It's a great game to sucker in new players. Epic games are always good for that. I use a Star Wars sound app when playing, too. It always gets the laughs. It has little sound effects and 30 sec clips of the classic music. I like to play the music of the Falcon vs Tie Fighters after the Death Star at the beginning of each turn. Sometimes it's the sound effects that draw new people to check out the game.

Ha! I did have a quick look for a good soundboard but I got overwhelmed by the options. Really though, I'm a huge Star Wars fan (I guess that statement means little in these forums!) and I've always been attracted by miniature wargaming. In the past I was put off by the requirement to assemble and paint the minis, and then having to play people in stores. My girlfriend plays with me and the minis are prepainted so I've fully invested in this, we both have a great time!

Now for the remainder of the month I'll sustain myself on oxygen and moisture licked from my X-Wing minis.

I'm desperate for a reason to but it

It looks AWESOME!?

You can always donate plasma for hobby money. I almost did that during a few unemployment spells. In the US, you can get $60 or so for each time.

The app I use is for Android and is StarWarsSoundSet1, but it's still hard to find. I think you have to google it just like that to find it. I spent $1 to get the pro version without ads. There is one called X-wing Soundboard that's alright, but not as many sounds and no music.

Yes FFG, missions with pre-built squads. Great for bring to FLGS and doing pickup games.

Time for this comic again... :)

Yes, Mr. Bigglesworth*, yes... I agree, Man U is overrated this and every year. Yes, I _do_ think the Earthquakes are the best team in the world. No, that's not just San Francisco pride talking.

*my assumption of your name for your Corvette.

As for balance: they've tried hard, and most people will agree that a transport is well worth its points- even in a 100 point game.

The Corvette is a point of contention. I think it is about 5 points over coated, and needs about 1 more energy per turn. (Remember that it's 5 points out of 300, not 5/100!)

They are both an absolute blast to play with, and create a very different feel for the game- while still being very much Star Wars.

The Huge ships have an energy mechanic that takes a bit of getting used to. It's different, but cool. And makes opponent Ion weapons terrifying.

Yes, Mr. Bigglesworth*

:P

I'm was questioning the need for Epic points at all, but then I realized how hard it would be to deal with ten transports lined up and traveling down the play area...

But who would have ten transports anyways?
