all day AGoT event, Saturday, July 18, New York City

By LetsGoRed, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

As was wisely suggested on the thread discussing the east coast mega tournament, here's a new thread to call attention to the event we've settled on. The core info that (hopefully) shouldn't change:

Date: Saturday, July 18, 2009

Location: Cranberry Cafe, 115 W. 45 St. (b/w 6th Ave. and Broadway), New York, NY 10036

Main Event: LCG format Joust

We can use this thread to work out any remaining particulars. But since this first post cannot be edited indefinitely, I am going to maintain the latest and more detailed information at the Events & Activities page on the NYC meta's website: www.agotny.net

How about we say that Time of Trials is legal so long as it's confirmed to be on sale before July 4?

That sounds good to me. I've updated the page to say so.

Info I've recevied from FFG says that TfT should be shipping out this week -- so you should definitely have it before the 4th.

Btw, I have talked with FFG. This will not be a Regional event. I unfortunately had to cut the call short so couldn't discuss it with them at length, but I think it boils down to too short of notice given to them and Regional registration process being in flux. That said, they will try to scrounge up some swag for us, for which I'm appreciative. And I've taken to calling the event "Kingsmoot in the East" --yes, I can be that dorky.

Once again - brilliant use of graphics Jason. Stunning.

Will we have a poster or somehting out in the restaurant to freak out the patrons?

And just got off the phone with sithlord - he's deifnitely a no go for the 18th - prep for the boards has him tied up until the end of the summer.

awesome logo. Are we getting shirts again or something with that printed on? Don;t have to, i was just asking.

casey campbell down here in DC knows a guy who works at a shop where they do laser-engraved glass trophies like the ones we typically see as prizes for card games. it turns out they're very inexpensive -- a few good-sized trophies for something like $30. once casey finds out exactly what kind of image we need to send to this shop, the DC meta will pool some money to get a bunch of them printed for the tourney. we haven't decided as to whether we'll do one for the top player of each house + one for the champion, or give out glass to places 1-5 or something. i think it'd be a cool idea to work letsgored's kingsmoot graphic onto one of those, but i'll find out what exactly we can get printed once casey gets back to me. would we need to worry about any legal issues concerning having an outline/approximate sketch of each of the house crests on the trophies if we go with the house crest idea (martell probably excluded)?

i don't think there is any copyright issue if we are not selling it or using it for commercial purpose or taking properity credit over the image. its not like these are unique and not found anywhere else in the world.

That's a bummer about Andy --the Sithlord will be missed.

Thanks for the compliments on the graphic --Staglord has heard me say this before: there's a frustrated amateur artist/graphic designer that lurks within me looking for *any* excuse to get out. (And the hardest part of the graphic was building the AGoT card game logo pretty much from scratch my manipulating some generic font images --necessary since I don't have software that can render raster-based images of the logo found online as a vector-based image). No plans for t-shirts this time around (time is somewhat short and it's expensive). Hopefully I'll get a chance work with Staglord again this year on the Black Friday tournament and perhaps we can have t-shirts again for that; I already have a "Black Friday V" logo worked up and waiting (like I said, *any* excuse...).

As for using AGoT/house logos of FFG, I think checking with FFG to get permission is best. I've asked and have gotten their permission to use their images for in-store posters promoting an event in the past and so hopefully they'd be ok with a few trophies that was going to be given out to participants that made use of their graphics. (I actually fudged and didn't ask for permission in this graphic --I took the liberty that it would be ok since it only appears here and on the NYC meta site (where I explicitly state that the AGoT The Card Game logo is FFG's property).)

I'd love it if you decided to use the graphic on a trophy, but as I said I think we should check with FFG that incorporating the AGoT logo is ok. And I can alter the layout some to make it more amenable to a vertical presentation. As for file types, the native file format I'm working in is CorelDraw (the red headed step child to Adobe Illustrator). I can export to various formats, including old AI formats (but have no way to verify how faithful it is since I can't open them) and EPS --this is probably the best option if they can work with it. If you're going to also put House symbols on the trophies and FFG says ok, we might want to see if they'll provide them in EPS form or otherwise in some high resolution format.

I think you'ld make a fine interior decorator.

who would i contact at FFG to seek permission and maybe get some EPS files of the house crests or whatever?

I'll email Scott at FFG and ask; he's helped answer questions I had about OP and hopefully he can get an answer or steer us to the right contact at FFG.

Cool, I'll be attending. (Just curious...how many others from the DC meta?) Also, what times are the events...I can't access the website from the computer I'm using (see explanation below).

Also, I'm working on a few prize support items, but the arts-and-crafts approach is taking a bit longer than (not going quite as well as) I'd hoped. I hope to have a couple neat items to add to the community pool, in addition to any lasered glass the DC meta contributes collectively.

Interesting tidbit...I'm currently in China until the 28th and I'm using an Internet cafe computer to type this message. Apparently, either the Chinese government or this cafe's network finds the NYC meta's website threatening because the site is blocked from my computer. (~I always knew those NYC players were a bunch of trouble-makers scheming to bring down the Chinese Communist regime.... What I can't figure out is how the PRC government tracked all of you down ... my guess is Stag Lord had something to do with it--revealing the NYC plot through a complex series of betrayals and spelling errors :P )

A start time hasn't been settled on, so it's just "TBD" right now. With the talk of possibly having six rounds for the LCG joust "main event", I'm thinking a start time of 11am might be right so as to be able to finish up around 6-6:30pm (with a half hour lunch break tossed in), letting folks then eat dinner and still have plenty of time for standard or other pickup games.

Stag Lord doesn't do any of the website editing. ~No one has the time necessary to go back and proof everything he'd type. lengua.gif

making an 11:00a start time will be impossible for the DC crew -- how about something closer to 1:00p, hoping to finish at 7:00p? we're planning on taking the megabus, which isn't always on schedule, and to get there by noon we all have to be downtown DC (a half an hour's metro ride for each of us) by 7:30a. in fact, i see now that we might have to come up with some other plan... the DC metro system doesn't even open until 7:00a on the weekends.

Ok, so 11am is not going to fly. Let's tentatively say 1pm and see if you and the other DC guys as well as other travelers think you can make that work (I recall Bloodycelt saying somewhere that his ETA would likely fall in 10am-noon; I don't remember anyone else yet putting an estimated time on their arrival).

Finite, based on the photo in this FFG article prominently showing off a fan made trophy with icons from the CoC game (I think, haven't played the game), I'm feeling pretty good that FFG will be fine with the trophies you're contemplating. Whether they'll supply high res image files remains to be seen (I've already sent the email to FFG asking for permission and whether files could be made available, but haven't heard back).

1 is ideal for us as well. 12 would have been close and 11...very very rushed.

Well, since NYC players are dropping like flies (conflicts abound! sad.gif), the least we can do is be as accomodating as possible for the out-of-towners. happy.gif

I aso think 1:00 is more do-able than ealrier. Balck friday never really kicks off until 1-ish anyway, adn a lot of that is more due to NYC palyers than out-of-towners.

RE: PRC. It is my fault. some of you already know, but I guess i can reveal to rest of you now that I have been a long time agent of the kempetai, the Japanese secret police and they have been out to get me since the incident at the Marco Polo Bridge. (That was a rough day, let me tell you).

No seriously, the PRC won't let people access the site because of sithlord. He owes a lot of money to snakeheads and there is a whole thing going on in Beijing between Jintao and the Wong clan. You don't want to know.

Heck, if they didn't sue us Chi-Towners for ripping off their copyrighted card design to make CoM Promos for ChiCON III (without us asking them, I might add), I don't think they'll come after you for using icon images on trophies. They may not help to make them, but since no one is profiting off the trophies, they probably won't mind the use of them. (Art - as opposed to symbols - may be a different story, though.)

nnnooooooooooooooo reel them back in

Ah, NY representation should still be fine --b/w NYC and Long Island, there should be at least 7 of us. I'm just bummed that two of NYC's most stalwart players --Sithlord and GreyjoyChris-- won't be able to make it (GJChris was good to go until a flight of his got rescheduled to Saturday afternoon that, together with the later start time, effectively eliminates him).

Seven is a healthy number.

Just to echo Finite, DC metro opens at 7 am on the weekends, so it's most likely some of us can't get to the bus before 7:30/8:00 am. I think a start time of 1 pm sounds good, as long as it's slightly flexible just in case the bus we take hits traffic. (Going back on the bus is a lot easier. Buses run late, and the metro goes until 3 am on Saturday--not that I want to take it that late though.)
