Could this be a sign that an X-Wing game is coming to a tablet .. near you?

By Conandoodle, in X-Wing

Good morning,

I note that FFG Is currently advertising for an Application Developer. Some of the criteria for emloyment are experience with graphics, shader, multiplayer and network programming.

I'm not normally quick to jump on the speculation train .. but could this be a sign that FFG is expanding their presence in the app store? And if so, what do you think are the possibilities of an Xwing game?

To my understanding, FFG doesn't currently have the license to make star wars video games. As such, that won't happen. But that doesn't mean that FFG won't be putting other quality games onto a tablet. Though my guess is it's going to be more of a supportive app than a standalone. Think X Wing Squad Builder or the Dice App.

What they need is an opening in purchasing and supply chain...then I can go work there...

I know that, specifically, FFG's new XCOM board game requires use of a digital app to play it. It could be that they are trying to branch out into more of the traditional/digital hybrid for some other games, but I doubt very seriously that X-Wing will be a mobile app. Among other things, pricing just doesn't work that well when it comes to a full collection of ships on an app.

camping make the video game version of the X-wing game?

/\ melted my brain trying to figure out what that was meant to be

FFG doesn't hold the Star Wars license for any form of electronic gaming, that includes digital versions of their Star Wars rpg books. EA has the electronic games license, and unless EA works out a deal with FFG (if they can event do that), then FFG wont be creating any X-wing video games or RPG books. You'll have to be happy with Battlefronts 3 when it comes out, which will probably be awesome.

I was just saying this weekend it would be nice if the chacter cards from Imperial Assault could be tracked / played off of a tablet...

Maybe x wing 2.0

Be like those skylanders or Nintendo amiibos or whatever you call them.

The base of the ships have a code, set it on tablet and it scans them into the game

New core set wh new dmg deck

Updated cards

New pilots

And a description on how to make use of your proof of purchase and input your older ships into the system

Or maybe it's something new altogether

They have a dice app, the xcom one and no doubt others.

EA has game rights ffg couldn't put out a digital version of their game without their cooperation.

It's called a 'datapad', dammit! Get your SW lingo right.

:P

It will probably be awesome 1-2 months after release, after being released with crippling bugs. And then some key content will be locked behind a pay wall...

Well, I probably wont be able to run it on my laptop or 360, so by the time can afford a new system to play it on, it'll be cheep and bug free.

It's like people have already forgotten battlefield four, the game that dropped EA shares prices massively.

EA don't care about shares, all they want to do is wreck videogame franchises.

Same for Capcom: Ignore sales and focus on pissing of megaman fans.

Hey man the last resident evil wasn't much to write home about either.

They have advertised for app dev's in the past. Its probably one of jobs that gets alot of burn outs.

I got half way though translating x-wing into a unity 3d app but then lazyness set in and I started working on another project instead. I'm pretty sure there's a x-wing plug-in for the table top simulator on steam but i dunno how good that is.

There is also vassal.

A point consider regarding licensing.

No-one here seems to be employed with FFG's legal department (please correct me if I'm wrong by saying "objection your honour" - I consider this irefutable evidence that you can 'legal') and therefore not in a position to definitively comment on contracts and licensing.

There may be a chance that licensing is in the process of changing. Possibly permitting FFG to release digital versions of their own games.

The position's criteria caught my eye. Experience in multiplayer stuff. I can't help but see this as FFG beginning to expand in their online presence.

After that debacle with "Attack Squadrons", they could as well give FFG the license to produce X-Wing for tablets. At leastthey could be sure that the game would know a lot of success due to X-Wings big fanbase and usually FFG delivers good quality products too.

Could finally be a use for our proof of purchase tokens.

Buy the game (treated as core set so comes with 1 x wing & 2 x ties)

then scan in pop tokens to unlock ships you've bought. Or buy cheaper digitally for additional ships.

A tablet version of this game would be epic!

Not holding my breath for vassal to cross over due to pc master race mentality.

They're probably trying to fill positions for BattleLore.

"BattleLore: Command is now up for voting in Steam Greenlight. Go to the game’s Greenlight page and vote now to make this tactical combat game available for PC and Mac OSX!"

As for the licensing issue, all I know is that the Devs of both X-wing and the SWRPGs have gone on record multiple times about how they don't have the digital gaming rights. This may have changed but it would've had to have been very recent. Believe what you will, I'm just saying don't get your hopes up because the evidence say it's not likely to happen.

If the digital gaming rights would've shifted than you probably would've heard about that on various news channels and press releases.

It's probably just for companion apps or Battlelore.
