I love the yellow eyes on the trandos. Very good touch. I also like the black base. It's refreshing after seeing all the grey bases.

I dig the black bases and the red paint around the base edge for elite unit as well. Maybe for an enhanced visual distinction, you could repaint the hero bases white so that you would have that extra "at a glance" differential between Republic and Empire.

White is pretty unforgiving. Especially with it being really hard to clean up the mold lines/ sprue twist on the bases completely.

I'm thinking all red bases for the heroes, or maybe blue. I'd like to have the starbird over the entire base, but that's a little beyond the time/effort I want to put in to these guys.

yes, GW "gloss varnish", which I think is now part of their technical paint line called " 'ardcoat "; I think they're identical
