Rumor Quests from Big Box expansions

By Flixster, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hey all!!

Forgive me if this has been covered, but I was wondering if the new quests from the two big box expansions include Rumor cards to weave them into other campaigns. I kind of assumed they did not, because they are a campaign of their own, but I figured I'd ask.

My group is starting a fresh campaign from the base set, and I was going to order an expansion just to give more class variety and monster variety. If the LoR and SoN boxes allow us to use the new quests as rumors, it would make my decision easier. Because if they don't, I'll just grab Trollfens or Manor (I already have Lair of the Wyrm)

They don't. LoR and SoN are separate campaigns which can be extended by rumor cards just like the Shadow Rune campaign.

Thanks, Funk.

In your opinion, would I be better off picking up Trollfens or Manor then? Since I'm running the base campaign, and I know the big box expansions have a lot of material that only comes in to play if you're running their specific campaigns.

The only thing that "only comes into play if you're running that campaign" is the campaign itself, and mechanics like "overgrowth" and "portcullis." The heroes, classes, monsters, OL cards, and shop cards can be incorporated into any of the other quests/campaigns. Labyrinth of Ruin, for example, provides an entirely alternative basic deck for the OL to start with. I recently used that against a rather hearty hero group during a "Shadow Rune" campaign.

The difference with the small boxes is that the quests can be rumors- but you get less heroes, less classes, less monsters, and less OL cards.

EDIT: pardon me, fewer.

I have all the 1st. edition material, so I have a good selection of heroes and monsters, so I'm really looking for something that gives me more Travel Events, Shop Cards, Classes for Heroes, etc.

Is there a significant amount more of those kinds of things in the big boxes versus the small boxes?

Sorry this is turning into another "what do you suggest I buy next" thread...

On the support page you can find the rulebooks for all the different expansions. Included in the first couple pages of each is a component list- I don't remember all the numbers off the top of my head, but I know for sure that the big boxes each have 4 classes for heroes, and the smalls each have 2.

Shadow of Nerekhall has a completely new travel deck, but that is only for use in the Nerekhall campaign.

I recently got manor of Ravens and I like the quest designs in it so maybe I'd pick that over trollfens which I don't have yet.

Trolfens however adds green dice which manor does not, (green dice are used by certain items and enemies which are weaker than yellow dice but have 4/6 chance to give a surge.

Trolfens also expands upon the secret rooms by adding a new room and different cards. Which if you are a fan of secret room may be something that interests you.

For me though even not playing the big box campaigns i still pick them over a small box.

At max you can add 1 rumour quest which then become and advance quest so 2 new quests. So just the lair of the wyrm satisfies me.

SoN adds 4 heroes and 4 classes and 3 new monsters. Green dice, Loads of shop items, extra universal OL cards. Overall I really like it. However it does cost a lot more than a small box but I'd say offers more than double the stuff

I really like the trollfens quests; all circling around a blight. Green Dice are nice additions too, would go for trollfens if I would have to choose.
