I proxied the scum and...

By Knucklesamwich, in X-Wing

Last night I finished printing out the scum pilots and upgrades that have been spoiled so far. My opponent ran Rebs that were usually good vs imperials like Wedge and Corran. We used the dials for the ships that already existed so I only ran Firesprays, Hawks and Y-Wings. My first impressions are that the new Firespray pilots I flew (kath and boba) are very good. Kath was especially good since she has 1 speed manuvers that allow her to move slow and keep that rear arc on target forcing opponents to chase to get her. Boba's rerolls are also very useful making him tougher to kill especially with rec spec. The only hawk I flew was Bonearm and he was fun but not terribly groundbreaking. My personal favorite was the new Y-wing. With the BTL-A4 title. The Y-Wing can cause some serious hurt. In one game I was able to attack with my primary against some support ships while consistently landing Ion hits on the Falcon nearly flying it off the board before I blew it up. The unhinged astromech that makes all 3 speed turns green was a nice boost in movement options for the Y-Wing. I liked the ship before but now it is dangerous. At 8 hits with two attacks 23 points (with ion) and only 24 with the unhinged astromech that gives all 3 manuvers as greens. This is really going to shake up things for the Rebels I think. The scum ships are shielded and tougher then the average imperial ship so it felt like a Rebel on Rebel match. The imperials can probably use the same tactics they have traditionally used. It should be a fun years for X-Wing!

rebels cannot use the unhinged droid

the droids are different aren't they?

They can't share droids but they have some of the same ships. The ships behave similarly but the droids are a bit different.

The rebels don't have access to the unhinged droid but they do have the R2 astromech, so their Ys will turn tighter while the scum Ys will be sprinting around the board

The BTL-A4 Y-wing + unhinged astromech seemed like an extremely fun combo, and I'm glad to hear that it doesn't disappoint.

Did you try any of the illicit upgrades in your games?

I'm looking forward to trying the janky but hilarious combo of Drea Renthal + BTL-A4 + Unhinged Astromech + Autoblaster Turret. That's just 25 points, 29 if you add an engine upgrade to ensure the autoblaster can get in range. Just lock you target, close to range one, and turn them to hamburger with a barrage of laser bolts!

I didn't try an of the illicits. The only one that looked worthwhile so far was inertial dampeners but I didn't fit it in. I used Drea with a Ion can on and her TL ability was very useful on the Ion attack if I needed the TL for the first attack. The Y-wing feels very new now and was a blast to play. I flew three in formation in one game and they were chewing stuff to bits with 6 attacks.

You say "the" Y-Wing, then mention that you "nearly flew the Falcon off the board". Just to check: you are aware that large-base ships require two ion tokens to be affected, correct?

My own experience with the Y-Wing is somewhat the opposite: their crappy dial *requires* the Unhinged Astromech to be useful, which means they might get two shots, but they only get one focus/TL for both shots. You're either maneuvering like a drunken bus or shooting unmodified, and their 1 agility means they melt fast if they're targeted. Possibly Drea would be worth it, but then the expense is getting up there, and you're stressing yourself to use her.

Don't get me wrong, I think the Y-Wing has become a reasonably good choice now, with the title option and to a lesser extent the bombs. I just don't think they're anything to get excited about.

Anyone else have similar experiences?

He said it was like rebel vs rebel match. Unhinged astromech is like a R2 only for 3 speed.

I think the problem with playing spoiled scum now is that there is still quite some information that has yet to be spoiled. The MA-3 Sckyk for example, still has an unspoiled dial. I think that would be a staple of the Scum fleet and something that acts more like an Imperial ship with the low health but high movement.

But considering all the spoiled are 3 rebel ships 1 uncharacteristic Imperial ship and 2 actually brand new ships of course it would feel closer to another rebel faction instead of its own unique faction.

In one game I had 3 Y-wings with Ions. It's very easy to land an ion hit on the falcon and several of them were unfocused attacks. With one evade dice one hit has a good chance of landing that ion hit. With 3 two dice attacks and 3 ion attacks the Falcon could not get away the entire match. He stayed stressed almost the entire match. He also took a beating on the alpha with 6 attacks on him even though some were unfocused. After the alpha knowing that the falcon was going to go 1 straight it was not difficult to circle around keeping him in range to keep him ioned while using the primary on him if in arc or another ship. That would allow the ion turret to be activated to hit he Falcon again.

I've tried this list:

Kath, stay on target, outlaw tech, dead man's switch

Palob, moldy crow, recon specialist, ion turret, bodyguard

N'dru with lone wolf, hot shot blaster, munitions failsafe

Loved it. The combo on Kath works great, but only when facing lower PS pilots (obviously), and her ability is just nasty

Palob steal focus or forces opponents to play tactics they're uncomfortable with

N'dru is amazing for his point range, but its difficult to keep him actually alone

I'm also looking forward to using the new Firespray pilots. Kath Scarlet and Boba Fett both seem very dangerous and more deadly than their imperial counterparts. Emon Azzameen has a very unusual ability and makes bombs a much more intriguing choice, though a full bomb loadout may be prohibitively expensive it deserves some testing.
