Card Storage Question

By mlbrogueone, in X-Wing

Lord knows I've seen plenty of these threads before, but I've run into a bit of a hitch.

I used an Ultra-pro binder for my cards like this:

Problem is I've run out of space.

So I figured I'd just pickup some pages and make a custom 3 ring binder I could expand.

These are the pages I purchased:

The problem is the pages I purchased from Ultra-Pro that I thought were similar are just a hair too small. Like I could cut a sliver off of every single pilot card and the would fit in.

Why are the card pouches differently sized and does anybody know if Ultra-pro makes pages in the same size as their binders?

I bet my problem is something like the pages were deigned for 3 1/2" cards and the pilot cards area actually more like 3 5/8".

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Except the problem with the loose pages, as the OP mentioned, is the sleeved cards don't fit. Storage for these cards is kind of a problem right now in that the best available solution is the Ultra-Pro binders and those a) have a limited number of sheets per binder, b) the same pages cannot be purchased separately for a more customizable, expandable solution and c) I'm not a fan of putting the mini cards two to a sleeve, but that could just be personal preference I suppose. I have the sticker pages, as well as the business card pages and neither work as well as I'd like and there isn't really a better solution unless you like the tiny box ideas (which I tried too, but after a certain amount of cards, it's just not practical). After many trials with these cards, I think the best method we have for the mini's is the two to a sleeve approach in the Ultra-Pro binder. As far as Pilot cards go, the Ultra-Pro binders are indeed perfect. I just wish they had the same thing but with pockets sized for the mini's.

To the OP, I'm in the same boat and I feel for you. My best advice is to get another Ultra-Pro binder. Unfortunately, until something better comes along, it's what I have to do too.

Edit: OP did you see that they also have nine pocket binders? Bigger footprint, but more space. 360 single slots.

FFG makes sleeves, now we just have to convince them to take the next step and produce their own pages which would fit those sleeves. Do it FFG! We want them.

I'll ask the obvious question here, why not just buy another of the first if it worked well? If everything fit well, why not just have two or three? One for rebel, one for imperial, and a third for S&V? Just sayin'... :-)

Or a larger version? I have a 160 card version (2x2 alignment), and I believe they also have a 320 card version (3x3 alignment).

I'm currently using two 9 pocket Ultra Pros binders. One for my upgrade cards and another for all my pilot cards. Confession: I'm a little OCD, all of my cards are sleeved, categorized, and then alphabetized.

That being said, two sleeved upgrade cards do fit into the binder sideways but they tend to slide around and even fall out. I tried taking off the sleeves and they still moved around. Someone advised me to take a heat gun or soldering iron and carefully create a seam down the midpoint of each pocket. What do you think? Will that work?

I had the thought of a simple hand stitch down the center. But then I realized that I didn't care enough to put that much effort into it. I wouldn't think a heat gun would work as there wouldn't be a way to focus it enough. Possibly the solder gun since you could just tap it to the plastic to localize the seam. However, I still don't see how melting the plastic will make it stick to the fabric. Let me know how it turns out, as if it works well, I'll do that myself.

Well what I don't like about the current binder is that every time a new ship comes out I have to reorganize my ships because I like to do it alphabetical like. Plus I'd prefer to have one binder so there are fewer things I'm hauling around. I am in general need of a serious reorganization of my stuff because I have just outgrown my current system and S&V hasn't even arrived yet.

We tried cutting a sliver off the card sleeves for the pilot cards and they fit perfectly into the pages so I'm going to do that for now.

What I'm doing with my binder is organize everything by type, then alphabetically. However, I leave a page empty between each type. Over the last 18 months, I've had to redo it once (which was actually to pull cards out because I decided I didn't need 20 proton torps and 8 PTL and whatnot and it was getting full).

Are you using FFG sleeves? They are always (irritatingly) a little long. I usually find Ultra Pro or KMC sleeves to be a bit more or an accurate fit height-wise.

I am using FFG sleeves. I may take a look at Ultro Pro sleeves to see if that makes a difference.

I use a pro platinum binder with coin slot pages for the small cards and baseball card pages for the big cards works great. its a normal 3 ring binder.

Just an update, I tried "Dragon Shield" clear plastic sleeves fit over the pilot cards and into the Ultra-pro sleeves.

I've also been told that Ultra-pros regular 3x3 pages take FFG sleeves.

Lastly, our local gaming store has some suggestions based on what Magic players use that I'll be looking into.
