External ship mount

By MrDodger, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I seem to remember In a book somewhere the Falcon was carrying Luke's x-wing around.

Has such an external mount been statted yet? If not how would you do it? Is it feasible for a sil 4 to carry a sil 3 into hyperspace? (If the fighter was a Z95 or TIE for example).

At one point in Dark Force Rising (Zahn's awesome Thrawn Trilogy) the Falcon did tow Luke's X-Wing away from Karrde's base. I would say it's possible, but the towing vehicle should be larger an should suffer massive speed and maneuverability downgrades.

Agreed, not suggesting they should try dogfighting with a Z-95 mounted on top!

Thinking more along the lines of a hyperspace piggyback, a la the space shuttle on the 747? I think?

Not statted because it doesn't need to be. I don't remember the page #, but the core book does say most ships can haul around one or two starfighter sized craft.

Basically the Devs said if you want to have a freighter and a couple of fighters you just need the GM to thumbs up it and go. It's such a likely issue that the game is just better when you do it that way.

Given the relaxed approach to ship combat pretty much anything goes. There really aren't any specific nit pick tactical issues to occur with rules that are basic like these. Fosters more role playing and less rules homage imo.

In the X-Wing book series they had a modified corvette carrying an entire squadron of X-Wings. That's a bit much, and of course a corvette is a tad large for a group to manage. But just using the Falcon as an example, it has those two side docking ports that could easily each hold a fighter clamped in place.

I would, however, definitely require them to undock if there's going to be any combat. Either that, or disallow any maneuvering that would stress the dock/clamp mechanisms. That shouldn't be a problem, after all why carry fighters if you're not going to use them in combat?

Cheers guys.

Go for it, dude.

Well, Mass Doesn't Matter Too Much In SpAce When It Comes To Movement. There Isn't Any Resistance, So Id Call It A Secure Docking Ring And Move On. Wouldn't Allow It In Atmosphere Unless The Ship Was Modded For It.

Inertia is still present in space and mass matters a great deal. The shear forces are actually more threatening in space as the velocities tend to be higher....

True, but between shields, inertial compensators, grav plating and Star Wars Physics I think we can allow for that.

Just have the freighter behave as one Silhouette higher for Pilot-only maneuvers (only) and with -1 Speed and -1 Handling. This is plenty of penalty.
