Guys, it's ordnance, not ordinance

By mazz0, in X-Wing

I hate to be "that guy", but it's just the way I was born :(

Ordinance are acts of law, ordnance are guns and what not.

I'm glad you said it. It bugs me, too.

I have the feeling we had this thread already - must be the force or the internet. ;)

if you make paper balls out of law books and throw them then the terms are equal.

If you make paper space craft out of law texts you can actually hang ordnance on ordinance.

both can burn and may contain explosive content (ok one literally and one figuratively but you can't have everything )

I've always thought correcting literally to figuratively makes very little sense. You wouldn't use "figuratively" in that context - it's obvious you mean it figuratively (if it wasn't then you wouldn't be getting corrected). I think I would just glare at them and say coldly something along the lines of "No you/he/she/they/it didn't/isn't/wasn't/weren't/won't. Also 'invite' is not a noun."

So you can have an ordinance about ordnance...nice.

"But the point of a gun was the only law Liberty understood, when the final showdown came at last, a lawbook was no good..."

Can I just chime in to say thanks? I always notice these when they come up (StarCitizen community keeps their ships in "hangers"), but if I say anything, I get scolded.

It bugs me that I learned English to be able to better communicate with others, while a native speaker will just shrug it off, not even attempting to learn the correct spelling. And then somehow I'm "that" guy. Cheers mazz0!

Actually with TIE-fighters not having landing gear... :)

But I know what you mean. I'm already glad mankind hasn't devolved into LOLspeak yet. (Pur litracy iz kewl!)

Altough English is **** peculiar language at times: Take the plural for sheep for example.

The plural is the same as the singular? Error error. Does not compute!

You can't blame English for that, we took it from the Sheep language.

Yes, sheep have a hive mind. There is no concept of individuality, there is only the flock.

Baaaaaaaaaa.

That's why you should omit the literally.

I gave up as soon as they made figuratively and literally the same thing, stupid people have won so just go with it.

I have literally no idea why this thread isn't in the off topic forum.

Only in the US.

Or your memory. :-P

But it bears repeating, same goes for preforming.

Odd, people in that thread seem to be suggesting it's a UK/US difference thing. It's not, as far as I know - they're just two separate words.

I have literally no idea why this thread isn't in the off topic forum.

Because people use it in discussions of the game. I suppose it's debatable whether Forum Meta is on-topic.

I wish! Oxford Dictionary:

1.1 informal Used for emphasis while not being literally true: I have received literally thousands of letters

At least they've endeavoured to make it clear that it doesn't really mean that. I bet they spent a while on the phrasing for that one, as it probably pisses them off more than anyone.

While we're at it, (Outer Space) Fringer does not rhyme with finger.

I was ignorant once, too. I made a thread with the mispell in the title. I'm glad someone pointed it out to me.

Yep, me too. I only found out cos I didn't know how to spell it, and when I looked it (ordinance) I found out it was the wrong word.

It's a little silly to have expectations of people on the internet.

Goodness my reputation is at stake! How rare to have a simple message become a chiding, personal attack.

By all means, continue trolling and flaming. Since it is under the guise of being a civilized, top hat and monocle wearing discussion it makes it alright.

"Ordinance" and "ordnance", I get.

Where I always go fuzzy is figuring out what's an "ordinance" and what's a "sacrament"

(Little theological humor there :P )

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand....

I don't think you get that it was a silly comment to a friend, bubble clearly got it.
