Are we out of Rebel Ships for Wave 7? Any guesses?

By patox, in X-Wing

Your Final 5 doesn't have the XG1 Star Wing Assault gunboat, a ship infinitely more likely than the toss can.

Pro's appeared in all of the x-wing games (even the first one). Arguably most well known non-TIE Imperial fighter.

Direct precurser to the missile boat fanboys keep fapping about.

A lot more used in the Empire than the Phantom and Defender combined.

Cons: Imperial, not a TIE.

Mentioning this as really the R-41 and Toss Can are Scum ships more so than Rebel. T-wing barely got any use as Rebel and was mainly scum too, though granted all 3 ships can cross pollinate - along with the space cow, a ship used frequently by the Rebels. (complete with spraypainted starbird) then can even release a stolen shuttle /stolen DX9 pack.

With Rebels, i'd accept that they have less actual ship types due to being more focused on in detail in the movies, and as such concentrate on repaints and heroes. Give the Imperials more ship variations and more Generics.

Maybe aim for 6 heroes for each rebel space ship, and only the typical 2-3 for Imperial. This fits the spirit of the 2 factions, with a Rebels always outnumbered, never outclassed heroes attitude and the Imperials dozens of identical ships/ships for specific roles.

The K-wing (as a rebel non-turret large ship) would be nice.

According to Wookieepedia, the K-wing is 20% shorter than the Aggressor (the smallest Large ship by a decent margin), and it has not one but two turrets.

I agree it would be really cool to see a Large Rebel ship with a traditional firing arc, but I wouldn't look to the K-wing to find it. ^_^

I would pay good money for a Pulsar Skate.

I know! I'm not a fan of the blocky version in the Rogue Squadron comics (it looks like an enormous bat having bodily congress with a bulldozer), but the version that actually looks like a skate is something I'd love to add to my fleet:

400px-Baudo-class_star_yacht.jpg

YES! That version is the one I always picture in my head, too. The novels describe it as looking like sea life, and the design from the comics doesn't do that description justice, as far as I'm concerned.

Further to my above comment I propose this:

X-wing Aces. 4 differently painted X-wings. 4X4 titles. (4 titles, 4 cards each)

A title for X-wing boosting.

A title for X-wing Barrel Rolling.

A title for X-wing System upgrade or 2 modifications or crew slot (xw tandem did exist) or EPT. I know, basically any of the existing title cards, only for an x-wing. I wouldn't choose this as an option.

A title for a cloak action maybe?

A title for something new - maybe use the pilot abilities of another pilot.

Maybe a title swapping torp for missile slot.

It'd also include ordnance at discounted prices.

What's the name of the ships Ethain A'Baht is firing at...?

I was also thinking something along these lines. I'd like to see Corran Horn and Tycho Celchu available as X-Wing pilots, and this is a solid way to get them back in those cockpits where they belong.

It even suggests color scheme for a couple of the repaints, as you could do Corran's CorSec X-Wing, and Tycho's Alderaanian colors.

Or, alternatively, I'd like to see some “variety packs” that aren’t full expansions, per se. No mini, just packs with new pilots/ upgrade cards for the minis you already have. I’d definitely buy a bunch of regular x-wings if there was also a “variety pack” selection of various Rogues and Wraith Squadron pilots I could be fielding. I assume it wouldn’t be too expensive to do something like that…

Well we know the fourth faction citizens of the galaxy is going to cover chiss and other races that don't fit anywhere else, that'll probably end up there.

You're kidding, right? You of all people have to be kidding. I'm like... 78% sure you're kidding.

Kidding; pretty sure he is referencing an earlier post about an FFG release for the RPG game. Someone, maybe hobo himself, was making fun of the guys who think FFG deliberately drops hints as to future releases in prior release's art. This yevethan fighter on Etahn's card is one of the usual suspects.

Yeah, I'd probably be willing to pay ~$15 for a cardboard only expansion that added new pilots and upgrades

I wonder how many a reasonable amount of pilots would be for a $10-15 dollar cardboard only set. Because I'm picturing like, 12... but i have no idea how much the printing for all that stuff actually costs.

Yes I'm kidding I think if it happens a fourth factions far off.

No I never mocked people who thought art was a clue, if you remember I was one of those 100% sure a third faction would happen.

Ah, OK.

Of course, art can be a clue (the scyk was featured in wave 5 art), but it's very unreliable, as in the case of this yevethan ship, which I seriously doubt we will see.

Man, did ANYONE like that trilogy of books (the ones with the Yevetha)? I remember them being kind of a slog to get through.

I only ask because they seem unpopular, so picking ships from those books would be really unlikely.

YV929 Armored Transport, might be nice for the rebels at some point. Could be used for scum too thought there's already a lot of cross faction stuff between rebs and scum.

I'd favor the Light variant, since it strips the Turbolasers. I think it'd fit better as a dogfighter freighter than the Armored version would, which seems more like a fleet battle freighter.

Well, most Star Wars books were a slog to get through. The exceptions are the X-Wing series, the Thrawn trilogy, and the first half of the Yuuzhan Vong stuff.

Wait, the first half of NJO?

Everything before Star By Star (maybe everything before Enemy Lines) is AWFUL and Salvatore should be tarred and feathered.

It's sad because RA Salvatore can actually write good books (Despite Drizzt becoming a cliche it should be accepted that at the time he was a pretty badass character and the icewind dale series are amazing).

Also, He does have the balls to kill off main characters, and that was needed.

Well, to my mind back when I was 12 or so, they were almost all pretty good. I doubt they'd hold up now that I'm 30, though.

But I digress. Back to discussing possible Rebel ships! Sorry for the tangent.

I wonder how many a reasonable amount of pilots would be for a $10-15 dollar cardboard only set. Because I'm picturing like, 12... but i have no idea how much the printing for all that stuff actually costs.

I have a hypothesis that the for a blister pack with a mini, more costs are tied up in development and printing than in the plastic itself. I think one of the reasons they've done Aces-style releases rather than "cardboard only" expansions isn't because they're using new cards to force us to buy repainted minis, but because they're using plastic to "trick" us into paying for the work that actually goes into the cards.

An alternate hypothesis notes that so far almost everything they've done has been more or less a standalone product: if you already own the core set, when you buy an expansion you have everything you need to play with every piece in the expansion. Most Wanted breaks that pattern, but it's an exception, and they may be holding back on cardboard expansions because it's the first time they'd offer anything in the X-wing Minis line that can't be played by itself.

The first suggests that a $10-$15 cardboard-only expansion would have about the same content as a regular blister pack. The second suggests that we're unlikely to get them at all. :(

I disagree; I think the fact that he started writing Vector Prime with the goal of killing off a major character indicates a flaw in his writing as a whole. Reportedly he didn't pitch a story where (spoilers) Chewie died, he asked LFL for a list of characters he couldn't kill off, and wrote the story around one of the people left off the list.

Basically, I think killing off a major character is an obvious but somewhat lazy source of drama and pathos, and the fact that Salvatore went to that well before he knew what the plot says something unflattering about his work as a whole.

That, and the creation of the molds is the most expensive expense. Why not re-use them. Repaints are much cheaper than a new ship.

I'm pretty sure that killing Chewie came from above Salvatore.

Well, with that in mind, I certainly wouldn't mind just a bunch of repaints being the "new" Rebel ships. Various canonical squadrons and organizations are out there, not to mention personal paint schemes. And since I'm paranoid about trying to paint them myself... I'd be glad to let FFG do it. :-D

In regards to Salvatore... I haven't found a single book by him that I've enjoyed. And boy, I've given him a bunch of chances based on friends' recommendations.

Honestly, my favorite Star Wars book was X-Wing: Starfighters of Adumar.

Oh, which brings up, what about the Adumari Blade-32 fighter? No shields, but a front and rear firing arc and a decent hull. Might add variety.

The Black Fleet Crisis trilogy was awful. Those and the Boba Fett trilogy by Jeter are the only Star Wars novels I've read that I would never, ever pick up again.

I've been dying for Otana to pop up since I started the game. I loved XWA as a kid, so getting to fly that thing would be fantastic. I've always preferred the way it looks over the 1300 or 2400.

XWA is my JAM! I was playing it as recently as a couple months ago. Very relaxing. An Otana would be fun, but I like my small ships so much... I'd like more of them.
