I'm new to Talisman, and am learning that some cards are not very clear about how they work (e.g. Immobility spell). The Ghost is an "Enemy -Spirit" with a craft of 4. It then says it materializes and you must roll a die to see what happens to you character. I assume this means that you must first battle the Ghost, and you only roll if you lose thed battle. Correct?

No, if you draw the ghost, then you must roll a die where the ghost is heading. Nothing more.
If a other character is landing on the space where the ghost(enemy spirit) is, then you must fight him.( he is already laying on the board)

Keep in mind that you must (encounter) do these cards first (when you draw them)before anything else( like events etc
