CR90 repaints

By Gekko, in X-Wing

Favoring the Dark Side, I decided to give my newly arrived CR90 sort of an "imperial" repaint so that it looked cool when flying against the rebel's Tantive IV of a friend of mine. The following acrylic paints and techniques were used:

1. Base colour is Tamiya XF-66 "Light Grey" and was applied using an airbrush from Revell. As the colour turned out to already have a blueish tone, there was no need for mixing it.
2. The blue areas were painted using Gunze Sangyo H56 "Intermediate Blue" (US Navy Aircraft in WWII).
3. The few darker grey panels were painted with a mix of the base colour and a little Gunze Sangyo H12 "Flat Black".
4. Then came a gloss clear coat of Revell Aqua colour 01 to prepare for the oil wash.
5. The wash was done with oil colour from Schmincke "Black Iron Oxide" heavily diluted in a turpentine substitute.
6. At the end, a matt clear coat was sprayed on from a can of Marabu Matt Varnish.

I did no additional weathering (chipped paint, rust marks) as the imperial ships seem to be in a more pristine condition than the rebel ones.

Bad timing: I started the repaint on 18-DEC (Steps 1 - 3). The imperial Raider Corvette was spoiled one day later! I definitely would have stayed with factory-painted CR90 with that piece of information. Luckily, I already have some repainted rebel ships that fit quite well with the imperial CR90 ;-)

That looks sweet!

The blueish grey is perfect! Great job.

(Now I have to buy a second CR90. There goes my money... )

Sharing is caring.

Nice looking ship. Of course I would have highlighted more but then again I always like highlights. I suppose it comes from painting Warhammer models for most of my painting career. ;)

If you find yourself needing it back to Rebel eventually you could always paint it back. Judging by the quality of that job you could probably make a pretty nice and unique Alliance CR-90.

That or fly your Imperial one alongside the Raider...

Thats lovely work chap.

I did a slighlty less drastic job on mine to make it more 'neutral' so i could use it for rebels, imperials or s&V

Mine is all green, got distracted by a side project and work, but I am going for a CorSec look.

...now that I have decal paper back in the house(and hidden), I might be able to finish this beast up.

Thanks a lot for the positive feedback, guys :-)

@Gadge: Nice one, schuld indeed work perfectly for any faction. The cockpit is cool, I am tempted to steal that look ;-)

@MacrossVF1: Yes, the highlighting you do on your repaints looks amazing (e.g. on your great Sith Infiltrator). My background is WWII fighter planes in 1/48 - no highlighting there as the photos of the real aircraft also do not show this "effect". But maybe I should give it a try when I do the classic Kath Scarlet repaint once the Slave 1 gets available over here.

@Joe Boss: THX for sharing!

...Is that a refueling nozzle on the A-wing!?

Gekko, that thing is a work of art. Excellent work.

Borrow any ideas you like, im flattered.

...Is that a refueling nozzle on the A-wing!?

Oh, that unfortunate A-Wing

The ship got stripped of its lasers, engines and the hull was heavily sanded by a friend in his first attempt at modelling ever. He gave up after applying the fifth unthinned layer of acrylic paint and left that poor little A-Wing to me for salvation. It was in a terrible condition!

Anyway, good catch! It really looks like a refueling nozzle. However, it was intended to act as a (admittedly lousy) replacement for the original lasers. As I "suspended" scale modelling about 15 years ago, there were no better leftovers available ;)
