Is it actually possible to beat Quachil Uttaus in combat??

By Alabama_Man, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

I'm so **** glad Quachil was released with the Innsmouth Espansion, since he's among my favourite GOOs (Well, I'd say my favourite non-HPL's GOO).

So, I really love the dust decks thing, but allows the game to be still beatable.

But yesterday the **** little rugrat managed to awaken and -as you would bed- he beat the heck out of us.

Is there any possible way to defeat it???

Even those very rare items which allow cancelling a GOO's attack for a turn (e.g. the Warding Statue) are not that useful.

Probably the only possible way would be having most of the investigators blessed, with lots of Clue Tokens, Fight skills (and maybe Zoey with a nasty Shotgun?)... But odds would be bad anyway.

In any case, I kind of like losing this battle: Azathoth is nastier anyway, so you still get a chance. And live the chill.

Yes, with enough clue tokens (And probably Joe + Fight), plus a shotgun for the double 6s, since you can't get weapon bonuses anyways. You're going to have be able to drop him almost instantly, of course, so it's still an extremely difficult battle. If you haven't prepared, I'd say that there isn't any realistic way to win.

Norman + Pass PS could remove 4 doomers.

Marie + Pass PS could remove 2 doomers

Call Ancient One with say 5 trophies.

Tommy Muldoon as first player, his PS removes 1 when he's devoured IIRC.

He's much harder for small teams than for large teams. Remember that it's Investigators attack then AO attack. So in the first attack you get everyone fighting and in the second attack you get one less and so on. In the 2 player game you get 3 total Investigator attacks and all your clues to get 24 hits. In the 8 player game you get 36 player attacks and all your clues to get 96 hits. In a large game with maybe an extra blue watcher or something it's not even terribly difficult. Because the number of total attacks the Investigators get grows triangularly as the number of Investigators increase, while the number of hits required increases linearly.

It's a very different fight than Cthulhu, who scales evenly to the size of the team.

What about larger teams probably having those pure-fodder investigators though (Fight 3, Fight 4 doesn't really warm you up inside either)? Game comes with 48 Clues, so that's 24 hits if you're Blessed, 16 if not. That's still 80 more hits for an 8-investigators team (non-Blessed, 72 for Blessed). With 36 attacks, that's what, slightly above 2 hits per attack, at -3, you'd need effective Fight 9 for non-Blessed, Fight 7 for Blessed. Base game Fight +1 helps, same for DH Grapple.

What about it? Let's say that only half the team is meaningfully contributing, and they are spaced evenly around that table. In the two player game, you get 2 attacks by the one contributor. In the 8 player game, you get 2 attacks from one, 4 attacks from the next one, 6 attacks from the third, and 8 attacks from the last guy at the table. The Ancient One gets four times as much toughness, and team awesome gets 10 times as many meaningful attacks.

Quachil starts at essentially unbeatable, but as the number of Investigators increases he scales down in relative difficulty. By the time you get to the 8 player game he becomes "very achievable" - and if you combine all the sets together and play a 10 person game he becomes "pretty easy." (Albeit that you would still lose a crap tonne of investigators doing it).

...that would look hilarious, given that Quachil Uttaus is barely larger than an infant! *imagines 10 Investigators hacking into his tiny body*

i'm convinced that joe with enough clues could solo him. Needs 12 sucesses before Q-U attacks. I'm reasonably certain that joe with enough clues, a blessing and possibly a shotgun can solo any AO except Azathoth and Tsothoggua.

Skidds with a Fight skill would also work, if he had a ton of clues. Especially if Mandy's in the game as well.

My group just played against him yesterday and won, but it was pretty close. We played with the base, innsmouth, dunwich, the black goat and dark pharaoh expansions.

Total of 4 players: the handyman, redeemed cultist, the violinist, and the professor. Myself (cultist) and handyman were blessed, and he still had his shotgun. I was pretty decked out with spells, and some unique items. The main reason we won was because of the violinist, she had some unreasonably large number of clue tokens due to hunting them all game and getting more when gates opened.

When we fought him it wasn't too bad, handyman was first and knocked nearly 1/2 his counters off, but was devoured by the end of the round, then professor was devoured next round, and we beat him.

He is very hard, I'd recommend having someone who is very good at getting clue tokens or has high mobility to do so and keeping shotguns. If you see him coming, make sure to get blessed, very useful. He is a very fun Ancient One to fight though.

That whole shotgun, 6, 2 successes against Physical Immunity pisses me off. It's crazier than Daisy. Why would it do more damage? It tickles more enfadado.gif ?

Cross and Bullwhip I get, they don't affect the monster/GOO so to speak (I see Bullwhip as you whip yourself to go at it more, giving you that reroll gran_risa.gif ).

Howvere in such a situation you would *innevitably* draw one of those: the AO attacks first FB cardssorpresa.gif
