Starting out in the LCG - newb question

By schrecklich, in 4. AGoT Deck Construction

There have been a few previous new player threads in the forum, but they weren't quite asking the question I wanted to ask so I decided to make a new thread.

So far, the only cards I own are the Stark and Targaryen decks I got with my Iron Throne Edition Starter Set (though I know someone who has a bunch more cards and we've played against each other with his decks). I want to get more into the game so I'm planning on ordering the Core Set soon. I'd like to pick up some Chapter Packs as well, but I'd rather not pick up all thirteen of them right away. So I'm looking for some advice on which Chapter Packs would be good to pick up for someone just starting out in the LCG.

I've looked over some of the cards on tzumainn.com, but having never played with the Core Set so far it's hard to get a sense of the value of different cards. One thing I did pick up on was that a lot of cards in the A Time of Ravens set care about whether it is Summer or Winter and the cards that determine that are in the first two sets. So if I just grabbed the later packs from this set, I might have a bunch of cards that I couldn't take full advantage of. I'd like to avoid making a mistake like that. In the same vein, I'd like to start out by picking up the most flexible and useful cards (cards that might be likely to get played in several different deck styles) so that I have a good foundation for whatever I choose to build in the future. Maybe there's a pack that has a card that goes into every Stark deck and another one that goes into every Baratheon deck. That might a good pack to start out on. I'm open to all four houses in the Core Set right now but not so interested in Greyjoy or Martell yet since starting with the Core Set I'll have much less of a base to build on for those two.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

well your iron throne starter cards are mostly no good in LCG only as they are mostly not reprinted in the LCG (and Iron throne was during CCG). That said if its okay with who you play against and your not planning on playin in any tournaments there is nothing stopping you from using them.

Chapter packs: I really hate the search function on here becuase this is a question that pops up every so often and that i lose the answers i had given before.

Here is a brief answer and I will try to get more indepth later. General chapter packs to buy: Ancient Enemies, Sacred Bonds, Calling the banners, and refugees of war. Solid characters/locations, a good plot for each house, and really good events.

Stark Chapter packs: Epic Battles, The battle of ruby ford, and maybe Scattered Armies.

Thanks, Lars! The search function here is pretty bad. I tried to search for old threads but couldn't find one asking how to start out with the chapter packs. I was only getting threads from people who already had bought all the chapter packs and were asking about building decks.

Looking back over your previous posts, I found these threads:

http://new.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_foros_discusion.asp?efid=16&efcid=4&efidt=1313&efpag=0

Those chapter packs you suggested look good. I think I'd like to start out modestly with like 2-3, maybe 4, chapter packs so I probably will buy all unique chapter packs (so that all the 3x cards aren't redundant for my first decks).

You nickname sounds so German. Where do you live?

for targ: The battle of ruby ford (bonus here as its good for stark too); The Raven's song (mainly for their character in here, but he is a good one; I'dd also say the most recent released CP City of secerts. If you want to go summer then pick up A Song of summer too.

@Mischraum.de -- I live in Connecticut in the USA. I speak German though, or at least I listen to German podcasts to try to keep my German up since I don't know too many people here to practice my speaking with.

I should be getting some LCG cards next week. Thanks again for the replies!
