Grand Admiral Thrawn?

By MaverickNZ, in Star Wars: Armada

I mentioned this in the Tarkin thread but I think he is such a legendary character we will definitely see him at some point.

What do you think his ability would be and why?

Im thinking with his ability to predict his opponents strategies maybe something like:

Prior to an enemy ship within range 3 of Thrawn activating, roll one red dice.

On a hit result the enemy ship cannot take/save an activation token.

So basically its a way of him guessing what the opponent will do and nulifying their ability to use that for future advantage - but by using it based on a dice roll its not going to work all of the time.

What do you guys think?

Yes.

It must be so.

Something thematic but potentially too powerful would be allowing his ships to view opponent command dials, then changing their own.

Would nicely represent his freakishly good ability to know what enemies were going to do and then counter them.

He MUST be in the game at some point!

Admiral Thrawn

When you use this card, your opponent must give you control of their entire fleet.

Ya seems right

Thrawn only works if your opponent brings artwork they have created

I would love to see Thrawn versus a commander who acts utterly outside what is implied by their cultre's artistic norms.

I didn't mind him in the Thrawn Trilogy but it seems like later on some authors decided that the Empire couldn't have a big win while he was alive without him being involved some how. Derra IV? The destination of the rebel convoy was deduced by Thrawn. The overall plan behind Death Squadron's missions between Yavin and Hoth? Devised by Thrawn. It is like the writers got together and decided that he was the only competent flag officer that the pre-Endor GCW era Empire had.

Or what about:

After an enemy ship within range 3 reveals a command dial, the controlling player must also reveal the next cup in their stack and its selected command to you, then returning it to the top of their command stack.

So basically - a free peek at what the players next action will be.

The only problem I see with that is that unless you're running Tarkin (and we've just established that we're running Thrawn instead) your ability to respond is three turns down the road... It may change who you shoot at, but since the Rebels so far have smaller command stacks and the Imperials have larger ones, I see this ability as being only minimally useful in the field.

I dunno, I can still think of a lot of ways you could use information on your opponents tactics without having to plot an immediate action.

If they have a squadron command, you would want to move your fighters to a good protective screen if they arent already

If its a navigate, you might move a ship to block or otherwise obstruct their possible movement location

If its a concentrate fire, you might spend that repair token you were hanging on to so that your shields are higher

If its a repair token you might choose a different target to shoot at unless you were confident of dealing a critical amount of damage

He could simply reduce command value of his ship by 1. That actually would be really really powerful.

These are really interesting, subtle points.

I am really hoping this is the way the game plays out: subtle, instead of "hi-diddle-diddle, right up the middle" and codex escalation.

Thrawn was about patterns. What if his ability is if a rebel player takes 2 of the same action in a stack Thrawn negates the 2nd action?

I hope they do release him

Y'know, I'm not convinced that we'll be seeing Thrawn.

There are no ships in the first wave that really scream "Thrawn" at me. The most logical place to have him is on an ISD, so wave 2 at the earliest.

But if Wave 1 hits in February (Please, God? I've been good.), figure Wave 2 in the summer, with Wave 3 hitting just before Christmas. Also, right before the NEW STAR WARS MOVIE. It's too good a marketing opportunity to miss. I'm pretty sure Waves 3 and 4 (maybe more) will be pretty tightly focused on the cool new ships and characters these movies will certainly provide.

Also, Disney now owns Star Wars. I seem to recall hearing that they're throwing out the Extended Universe. Thrawn is very much Extended Universe. Sure, there's a bunch of EU ships in the first wave (and most likely the second), but with new movies (and starships, and characters) coming out soon, I'm expecting FFG to focus less and less on EU stuff, and more and more on the new "canon" offerings.

Anyway, just my 2 cents. I'd be happy to be wrong.

They aren't throwing it out per say. More picking and choosing what parts they want in the new canon.

They really aren't though. They have pretty much thrown all of it out and they haven't really 'picked' anything to be re-instated.

A number of ship models and planets have been re-enstated. And lets face it the new canon consists of two cartoon shows and a novel atm so just because they haven't used many eu characters yet doesn't mean that they won' use some later.

Actually until they actually show something contradicting EU stuff they haven't thrown anything. For all we know they'll keep most of it and just edit parts of it. Or they might keep absolutely nothing. Until VII comes out we don't know anything for sure.

I actually feel like Tarkin's ability would be a good one for Thrawn, showing how efficient he was as a leader and maximizing his forces. Plus it's a BAMF ability that feels a little OP for Tarkin.

Tarkin should have an ability that shows a lack of mercy. And a distinguished, near aristocratic demeanor.

Sure they have. The Star Wars Rebels cartoon is listed as being part of the official canon, and it includes many references to EU material, such as Sienar Systems, the title of Inquisitor, lightsaber forms, etc.

Not to mention the new novels (mostly Tarkin) have already reconfirmed:

Carrack Cruisers

Dreadnoughts

Immobiliser-418 cruisers

Various fighters

Two other Interdcitor ships from the CC range

Victory-class

Various planets, events and characters that have not changed

So far nothing has actually been contradicted, and some stuff is already re-confirmed as canon.

I wouldn't count on anything in the animated stuff "sticking" if it gets in the way of something JJ wants to do in VII.

Considering the era difference (probably at minimum 40 years since the original cast is a bit old) I doubt VII will be contradicting much from the Rebellion Era. Mostly VII has the chance to rebuke the Thrawn New Republic and Vong stuff. I think they'll leave Thrawn alone, as everyone loves him, but everything post that I believe is gonna be shaken up.

Plus, the animated stuff is solid canon. I suspect Disney wont want that messed with regardless, even ignoring the huge era-gap.

I had started to fear Unremarkable was right: began to develop a really bad case of Splinter of the Mind's Eye blues...

So I decided to read the books that appear to be Canon: Tarkin and New Dawn . There is a lot of the EU that has been acknowledged in these books. Vlad gives a pretty good list, but there is tons more stuff that received "the nod." So far as I can tell, the material after ROTJ is what is in question.

Bottom line: I highly recommend reading the two books above. Or tune into Rebels, it's pretty entertaining.
