The description for Confidence (CRB pg 133) states that "If the character decreases difficulty to zero, he does not have to make a Discipline check." What about if there is a difficulty upgrade and one of the purples is a red? Does Confidence downgrade the red if there are no purples? Or not?

That is confusing as, IIRC, downgrading can't remove dice, only change reds to purples.

Read it again, it's decrease rather than downgrade. I believe decreasing occurs before downgrading, and it says if the character decreases to to zero, so yes, they would never have a chance to become red.
