Core Rulebook vs. Beginner Game

By Admiral Terghon, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I'm getting the Core Rulebook and GM Kit to start. I'll be adding the other sourcebooks months as budget permits. Is there any value to getting the Beginner Game too, aside from the included adventure? From the product descriptions it seems like everything in the Beginner Game is also in the Core Rulebook (and more of course). Is there anything specific to the Beginner Game that is worth having even with all the other books?

yes And No. It Helps Players Learn How To Play The Game Easier And For The GM To Learn The Die System. Bit If You Don't Mind Walking Players Through It Then Not Really.

The things that I've used many, many times from both the AoR & EotE beginner games are:

1. An adventure well-designed for teaching the game to players and game masters alike,

2. A full set of dice,

3. Handy tokens for Destiny Points (Othello pieces are expensive!). You can use pennies, but they're just so anti-thematic.

I keep reading every word with the capital letter inflection.

I've used the Edge of the Empire AND Age of Rebellion Beginner Boxes to teach the game to multiple groups.

I obviously use the dice, and the tokens in both sets have been very useful as well. I think they're a great value for what you get.

Sorry. My Phone Autocaps On The forum

True, But The Phone App Is Just As Useful And Cheaper. And You Can Use Coins To Keep Track Of Destiny Point. Heads Light, Tails dark. Plus It Has Regular Dice, X Wing Miniatures Dice, Imperial Assault. I Think Its A Better Deal. Don't Get Me Wrong, I Do Like The Beginner Boxes, But If You're Not After The Adventure, Then The Core Is Better For The Complete Rules.

The Beginner boxes are the best deal for the dice. As it includes maps and an adventure and tokens you can use if you don't have minis.

Maps For The Adventure. He Already Said Adventure aside. So Its 20 Dollars For The Dice AndAbbreviated Set Of Rules That He Has In The Core And GM Kit, Or 5 For A Dice App. IfYou Don't Care About The Adventure, I Can't SayBbuy Die And Rule You Have The Full Set Of for 20 bucks

Are you saying maps are not useful with out the adventure? Cause I use maps all the time with out using the accompanying adventure. A map without the adventure is still a map. And that can be re purposed.

Beginner game has the dice.

In other RPG's thats not such a big deal since we all have some D6 and D8/D10's lying around.

But for a sytem that uses a bunch of unique dice, having a starter set with all of them included is worth a mention.

True, But Unless YouGet A Yt 1600, Or What Ever The Ship In It Was, And Spend A Lot Of Time In MoS Shoota, Its Not Really That Helpful.Plus, You Can Get Those Maps From Google images f, That's WhereOur crew c Got Our Deck Plans from. He Has The Core, Has The GM Kit, 5 Bucks For The Phone App And Free maps From Google Images And He Has Everything From The Beginners Guide That He Cares About For 1/4 The Price, And Budget Is An Issue, As He Said. I Don't See The Value Of Getting It If He Doesn't Care About The Adventure It Doesn't Sound Like He's Going. To Use It To Introduce It To His Players, Which Is Its Purpose. If You Don't Want The Adventure, Already Have The RulesIn It, And The Complete Version, Don't Buy A Product You Aren't Going To Use. Spend 7 Bucks On ThE Die Set If You Really Want The Destiny Point Tokens, Or 5 And Download The App And Use Coins To Keep Track Of ThePoints. I Don't See The Value Of Spending Money On A Product When You Aren't Really Going To Use It.

Good responses, thanks. I guess I just have to decide if the map, the adventure (which I could use pieces of at some point, like npcs) and the tokens are worth $8 since I can get a set of dice for $12-ish.

I Do Recommend It For The Adventure. Its A Fun One And Will Reach You And Your Players How To Play. As A GM I Found The Experience Invaluable. According To My Players, It Was One Of The Most Straight Forward And Smooth Way To Play The game.

First, love the sig. Second... I'm leaning toward using the adventure now. I was planning on having some small "test" sessions to get people used to using the new dice system. Seems like this is an easy way to do it. I'll go tell my local game retailer to order me a copy of the beginning game too. *sigh*

Go To Ebay. Its Like 10 Bucks there.

...

Plus, You Can Get Those Maps From Google images ...

Problem with that is that you'd be participating in piracy, since those are copyrighted images. Buying the product and making a copy for your table is one thing, but image sharing over the internet is illegal...and it cheats the game makers out of their well-earned (and reasonably priced) remuneration.

Not Quite. I Have Fan Made Deck Plans For A Yt 2400 Drawn In Pen And Scanned. You Can Find Maps That Gms And PlayersAre For Their Games. I Also Have An OldGM Made Astroid Installation Someone Did For The West End Games Version. A Design My Crew Used A StarWind Pleasure Yatch dDeck plans That Was Done On Ms Paint. I definely didn't say every image on Google Images is copyrighted. And I certainly didn't mean to imply it.

But "those maps," as you say, the ones which were being discussed and which go along with the Beginner Game, are copyrighted. I was talking about those images specifically. My issue is that, when these works are pirated, it isn't fair to the artists and game designers who put in so much time and effort to bring such a great product to the whole.

I bought both of the beginner games for EotE and AoR, and will buy the one for FaD, primarily because it was a fantastic deal for everything you get. But if your group is already playing the game, and you aren't one to use published adventures, and you're never planning to teach he game to anyone new, then I suppose the dice packs are going to be (generally) more affordable, unless of course you can get the game used like the aforementioned eBay deal.

Sorry, I Misread. You're Right, Those Are. :)

The starter can be used with characters created by the players using the rule book.

As the adventure in the starter box starts in medias res it creates a pretty good place to start as it pushes the players together and explains in a very brief manner a posible way they met.

The adventure explains how the players came about their ship.

If you move the players into Long Arm of the Hutt by the end of that you have had the chance to give the players a base, work through opposed social encounters and go over the combat rules in more detail.

Finally it provides a quick look for a group uncertain about the game.

I definitely need a way to get the players used to the system. We've played 4 different systems in the last few years, split over several different genre. But they've all used numbered polyhedral dice with simple success/failure mechanics. The Rogue Trader / Deathwatch campaigns we've played (are playing) have degrees of success and failure, but still, that's it.

The Advantage/Threat and Triumph/Despair mechanic are going to take a bit to get used to for them. While I'm sure we could run it without too much effort on their part, just examples on mine for the first session or three, I want everyone to be comfortable with the system so that spending Advantage and Triumph is automatic for them, and so they embrace my expenditure of Threat and Despair without thinking I'm out to get them.

The more I hear from you guys and in a couple other threads, the more I think the Beginner Game is worth the extra $8 it'll cost me. As for the ridiculously cheap eBay deals, I've yet to find one that didn't have equally ridiculous shipping tacked on and above-retail BuyItNow prices. So I think I'll just go with my local retailer, I'm sure they can find one.

There are other online sources, as well. I prefer to buy through my FLGS, but I do sometimes also buy through Amazon.

Personally, I wouldn’t touch eBay, but I would buy through Amazon Marketplace — and have done so for some of the older books from previous versions of the game from other publishers, and which are obviously no longer in print.

Oh, and the Beginner set also includes some pre-gen characters, which may be useful to you. You can also download some additional pre-gens and other free material from the FFG website.

But I am a pretty big fan of the boxed Beginner sets.

If you're picking and choosing, I would use the AoR Beginner Game over the one for EotE. I've had much better responses from it, and I personally enjoyed it more. Just my two creds.
