Road to Legend?

By BenEggler, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi everyone!

So, I am brand new to Descent. Actually, I haven't even played it, yet, but I plan on buying it sometime soon! I've always thought it looked amazing and I can't wait to play it with my friends.

The thing is, one of the things that attracted me to the game was the Road to Legend expansion. I heard about it some time ago and absolutely loved the idea of having the tools that came with it. I wanted to buy that expansion with the base game, but I noticed that it isn't available anywhere.

The only places I've seen it have been on Amazon from third party sellers for $100.

What happened to this expansion? Is it going to be reprinted? Did the expansion just die? Were the components distributed into different expansions? Was it a limited edition run?

I'd love to hear the history of this expansion and whether or not it will be brought back to life.

Thank you in advance!

Ben

Road to Legend was an expansion for the first edition of Descent. The entire first edition is out of print, and has been for some time now. FFG is currently releasing expansions for the second edition of Descent, which was released in 2012.

Ohh, okay! Is there any equivalent to The Road to Legend? Are its components renewed/revised into a newer expansion or even the base game?

Some of the monsters/ heroes exist in the second edition. Currently, the expansions for D2E are:

"Big box" expansions (a full campaign story, monsters, 4 heroes, and 4 hero classes)
Labyrinth of Ruin

Shadow of Nerekhall

"small box" expansions (a short campaign story, monsters, 2 heroes, and 2 hero classes)

Lair of the Wyrm

The Trollfens

Manor of Ravens

"Hero and Monster Collections" (4 heroes, 3 monsters, all from the first edition, and 2 quests)

Oath of the Outcast

Crown of Destiny

Crusade of the Forgotten

Guardians of Deephall

Vision of Dawn

There are also custom expansions that people have been making. For example, I'm in the process of revamping the "random encounter" mechanic from Road to Legend for use in the second edition.

Thank you for the insight!

Are there any expansions that you'd recommend more than any others? I'd love a good idea of where to start in terms of expansions. What offers the most bang for buck? What has the most fun components? I know this is going to differ from person to person, but I'd love to hear anyone's thoughts.

If you search this forum, you will find several threads that answer that question in detail- and you're right, the answer varies quite a bit. It all comes down to what you and your group value in the game- hero classes, hero and monster choices, new stories to play, or cooperative game modes, among other things. (I just realized in the expansion list I provided, I completely left out the two fully cooperative expansions to the game- Forgotten Souls, and Nature's Ire.)

The primary thing that Road to Legend added to the first edition was a proper campaign mode (unlike the base game's "campaign mode" which was a tacked on joke.) However, although RtL added a whole new dimension to game play, it also had to work with core rules and components that had been originally designed for single-shot quests only. This made it pretty convoluted to read and learn, though epic to play once you knew how.

Second edition includes campaign play in the core game, and a lot of ideas from Road to Legend are included, in simplified and streamlined form, out of the box. It isn't as huge in scope, but it does run much more smoothly overall.

Well, I also liked Road to Legend but I liked the core mechanics from 2nd edition more. So i was working on implementing all 2nd edition stuff into a RTL-expansion. So it has certain cities where you can either purchase potion, allies, worship for faith,...

Also i made a certain faith and doom tracker, making sure that certain events trigger for either the heroes or the overlord, depending on who reached a certain score first.

You would have certain "main quests" (depending on the campaign you choose) and in taverns you can try to unlock rumours for additional quests (homemade conversions of Heroquest quests, rumor quests from all expansions,...).

Traveling along the board you would encounter travel events, random outdoor encounters,...

I'm willing to pick up the rules I've written down if you are interested. Still a work in progress though

Correction, BenEggler. As of now, I've got a "random encounter" mechanic that's ready to go. I made a topic in the Quest Vault forum with links to the maps/rules. It's not RtL, but it's a variant in that spirit. It requires just about all of the current expansions, and can be incorporated into anything but a Nerekhall campaign (as Nerekhall uses separate travel icons.)
