Imperial Raider .. Why?

By Slash Macbain, in X-Wing

If I were an Imperial commander and I was expecting to encounter enemies like rebels and S&V, I'd send in my Raider to either kill fighters or force a retreat, then send in my bomber squadron to finish them off.

That assuming I'm hitting a base or installation, but I feel the name is consistent with its role and capability.

I have no problem with them making new designs i just dont like the wings on the Raider. And i hope they keep the right SW aesthetic and avoid too much power creep. Otherwise original SW ships cant keep up and everyone is playing with new designs and it isnt as much of a SW game anymore....But that is one possible future, i dont know tech stuff

BECAUSE.

To alter the tack of this thread slightly, I think it's tme to pose an entirely new slant on the question "Imperial Raider - Why?"

As in, why Raider ? The name?

The Empire does not conduct raids . Pirates conduct raids . Bounty hunters conduct raids . Terrorist rebel traitors conduct raids .

The Empire conducts peacekeeping operations .

Probably for similar reasons why it's not called a A craft that is used in the middle of task forces to protect the light of the sun in a system and instead called a Star Destroyer?

Wrong.

The Gundark Knight?

Why design the Raider? Because it's awesome. Why call it the Raider? Darth (in)Vader was feeling narcissistic, but not too much so.

I actually do think it fills a nice role in an Imperial fleet- a small fire support ship that can free up a Star Destroyer's Tie compliment to focus more on Bombers than on Fighters and Interceptors.

I also imagine ships like the Raider are why we see so many converted freighters in the Rebel fleet- they'd have the hull to take a few hits in a way a fighter would not.

I'm not too up on the EU, but my guess is that they wanted something that evoked the Star Destroyer, but at a more manageable size, which apparently didn't already exist. That's it.

There's nothing wrong with questioning that. FFG may be putting this game out with Lucasfilm's blessing, but they're still essentially just fans, and even Lucasfilm has changed a million times in the decades since Star Wars began, so it's not like they're innately incapable of making bad decisions (even the original creator of a work can mess it up as far as anyone but the author is concerned).

There's more than enough EU out there that it would come across as pretty pretentious if FFG just started making up their own stuff willy-nilly. Just because you have the ability to add your own touch to a story, doesn't mean you should for that story's sake.

On that note, I think the Imperial Raider was a great addition and well justified. It has a believable place in the lore, and the design has original elements while borrowing from existing ships in a way that's just uniform enough to be logical without overdoing it.

No need to worry about power creep with the Raider because it's filling an empty spot: there isn't a comparable Imperial Epic for it to compete with.

What the heck? Not only loads of angry “how dare you ask?” responses, but also loads of “nobody's angry” denial responses too! Guys, I get why it's a silly question, given FFG answered it in their original article, but that's no excuse for the tone of some of thes early posts in this thread, and the consequent denials. Fly Casuel, eh?

Because the Empire hates Denver?

To me is not a problem of it being a new design or the name, is that the design they have done feels incredibly out of scale.

Imagine the Star Destroyer. Now imagine the Raider fitting inside the docking bay (like the Tantive IV does). That looks weird.

Look again, your Raider is now pearls! Now, back at me: I'm in a Tie Advanced. I'm the Imperial your Imperial could smell like.

But more seriously: I do get your point, the idea of a big triangle and the smaller triangle... Yeah, weird image.

And those wings tend to make it seem more like a 20 person boat than a 200 person boat, at least in my mind.

But I do love the cannons that look like they might pop up and retract. I'm really hoping a Raider shows up in Rebels. :)

I don't see the triangle in triangle thing as discordant. It just reminds me of that awesome scene in Empire when the SSD is revealed. Imagine that goodness with this ship in the mix too.

I am just confused as to why they did not just use the Tartan Patrol Cruiser. You know, the Imperial CR-90.

Probably because the Tartan is ugly, but possibly the 250 meter length, a CR90 is 150 meters. Especially the way the rear superstructure is built up, that is a lot of plastic.

The Tartan struck me as a derpy un-impressive design that didn't really scream star wars. It is also 250m according to Wookepedia- bigger than the 150m of the Cr-90.

It strikes me that FFG wanted an Imperial counterpart to the light patrol and cutter duties the CR90 was expected to perform. The Empire really doesn't have anything this small that isn't over-specialized, or isn't up to taking on capital ships as well as the CR90s could. Frankly the Raider looks more beautiful to me than many of the other possible ships, even with the interceptor wings.

Thank you .. i was beginning to think i was imagining things ...... No i dont get on the Forums much, just have to look at the number of posts I have made to see that ... but now a link has been added to a original forum about this ship. So a simple first reply could have been ... "This has been covered look here"

Thats one thing i had never even thought about actually ... i guess i kinda see your point "A Raider" is usually someone breaking in stealing stuff that isnt theirs to take. .. like the rebels ... or vikings of old haha

But then even i have to admit "Imperial Peacekeeper" meh not sure that would sound right haha

And now they basically give us exactly what we asked for (a Baby Star Destroyer) and still rant threads come up. Again you probably don't know it but you are not the first Raider Rant, and that's the reason why people react the way they do here!

Raider heisst jetzt Twix! Sonst ändert sich nix!

raid

noun

1.

a sudden attack on an enemy by troops, aircraft, or other armed forces in warfare.

"a bombing raid"

synonyms: attack, assault, descent, blitz, incursion, sortie

So Raider is an appropriate title

OMG???

So Much Anger for a simple question? .. Star Wars right? .. Anger leads to the Dark Side right? :D

OK .. as I stated above when I suggested months ago on another X-wing forum.. the idea of More expanded universe ships .... maybe even a more Factions ... such as a fringe element ..... I was Shouted down "NO..NO .. this game must be kept Pure how dare you suggest expanded universe how dare you suggest more factions."

Well Guess what 3rd Fringe Faction is here .... guess what a Raider is even beyond expanded Universe

So I am NOT SAYING they can't create 100% new ships

I am mearly asking the question when did everyone change their thinking on this game?

coz that is what seems to have happened as i am now being shouted down for suggesting existing ships

oh how times change??

maybe I will get to see the Yuzhan Vong after all?

I so angry...I put worm on hook and then fish bites my hook? No!

I wantzed cow.

I disagree about the Tartan looking derpy and not Star Wars. But I did not know about the size difference (I thought they were much closer), so that is an appropriate reason.
