One of two lists for a tournament

By DFocke, in X-Wing

I'm having a hard time deciding on one of two versions of a control list I have been working on. I've flown both, and think they can both be competitive.

Version 1

Blue Squadron w/ ion cannon, FCS

Blue Squadron w/ ion cannon, FCS

Gold Squadron w/ ion cannon turret

Rookie Pilot w/ R3-A2

Version 2

Blue Squadron w/ E-2, tactician

Blue Squadron w/ ion cannon

Blue Squadron w/ ion cannon

Gold Squadron w/ ion cannon turret, R3-A2

For version 1 I like that x-wings are better at shedding stress than y-wings, and that the b-wings will be able to switch from control to heavy hitters quickly with the FCS. However I like version 2 for the added resiliency, and additional stress causer.

So what are people's opinions on these two lists? Which list would you take, and why?

I like version 2 a little more, but I understand your reason for giving the rookie R3-A2. Another option you may want to consider is swapping out one of the Blues for Roak + ICT + Niein or Intel Agent. It's not as tough nor does it deal as much damage but the PS pump can be very good. I like these builds but Predator is a problem for these guys. If Predator is big in your area I might consider Roak, if it isn't then stick with version 2.

I'm afraid I haven't had the opportunity to play in this area in months due to work. You may even know better than me, the tournament is at Olympic cards and comics in Lacey Washington tomorrow. And unless I am mistaken you are just a couple of hours south mrfroggies.

As far as Roak, I've never had much luck with him. In fact I have never won a game when he was in my list. Just too fragile. I'm also leaning toward version 2. But I prefer R3 on x-wing than y-wings, and like the action economy of FCS. I may just have to flip a coin.

I strongly recommend high ps and range 3 turrets right now. "Control lists" are very overrated.

I see this as an AABC vs AABC fleet. By which I mean:

Blue Squadron w/ ion cannon, FCS

Blue Squadron w/ ion cannon, FCS
vs
Blue Squadron w/ ion cannon
Blue Squadron w/ ion cannon

Gold Squadron w/ ion cannon turret

vs

Gold Squadron w/ ion cannon turret, R3-A2

Rookie Pilot w/ R3-A2

vs

Blue Squadron w/ E-2, tactician

In Matchup A: Blues with FCS > Blues w/o FCS

In Matchup B: Gold with R3-A2 > Gold w/o R3-A2

In Matchup C: ?????

C: is a bit more complicated. It would be something along the lines of

2 stress causers > than 1, but x-wing w/ R3 is > than y-wing w/ R3.

Or version 1 looses a stress causer and some durability for increased action economy, and a better ability to deal with stress caused by R3.

I strongly recommend high ps and range 3 turrets right now. "Control lists" are very overrated.

I don't know for sure what others will be bringing, but I expect it will be a lot of high ps range 3 turrets. I would like to play something different. From my experience control lists can match up against these ships quite well. In any event I plan on finding out.

Because it can be stacked without being lost in a single turn, stress is a much better control mechanic than ion. It also doesn't hurt your damage output and affects large ships the same as small. PTL/EI users and ships which dependent on actions (phantoms, interceptors an A's, but also many aces) are also completely nerfed by stress.

Ion (turrets especially) has its place, but I wouldn't invest that many points in it. 1 or maybe 2 ion weapons is usually enough to keep higly manoeuvrable ships at bay.

Extremely annoying, not as resilient but a bit more mobile than what you have with the sensors.

This thing can Double and triple stress stuff and ion it on top, then close in for the kill.

I played against it yesterday and won with Vessery/Echo/Mithel but it was a really close call and my opponent had some bad rolls involved. My defender spent most turns double stressed, fortunately he didn't get Echo to grips...

I would take list 1. More diversity.

Doesn't mean it's a better list, just what I'd choose of the two.

But with no names guys, how will they know who's in charge? Out of ten.

The droid is named, so naturally he's in charge!

Mental note to myself. Wear my Vader socks and play Empire next tournament. Sure Call!

With Squad #1 have you considered that if you drop the droid and FCS you could instead add Tacticians to both the B-Wings? That way you can ionize and stress at the same time. You might trade out the Rookie for Cracken with either Squad Leader or Swarm Tactics. I guess another possibility would be Blount with Ion Pulse for those times you absolutely want to hit something assuming you get a shot at it.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I ended deciding to go with version 2, but ended with a stomach flu and missed the tournament. At least it means I didn't miss the play offs. I would rather be playing x wing.
