Wait, nearby Store Championships are TOMORROW?!

By Vorpal Sword, in X-Wing

So with travel over the holidays, toddler stuff, work stuff, and the everlasting dissertation slog, I haven't been doing much X-wing for a while. My hand has been occasionally in on Vassal, but it's been mainly casual and experimental stuff, and it's been only 2-3 times a month.

But today I started poking around looking for nearby close Store Championships, and discovered that the Independence, MO (aka Kansas City) championship is scheduled for 11am on January 10.

As in, tomorrow. :o

It's a two-hour drive, leaving my wife home for the day with the toddler and no backup, and I have no list and no idea what the metagame looks like. Do I bother? If so, do I go with a classic list and keep my fingers crossed, run something from my (long) set of experimental lists, or try to cadge together something "serious"?

if you do go... I'd say something classic that you think could handle YT's.

58 Dash.

2x Prototype with Refit.

Bandit.

Alternatively.

58 Dash.

3x Bandit - either 2 with Proton rockets or 1 with and give a set to Dash.

If you can fly Corran then one of the Dash/Corran lists that is popular might get you a win. Also those lists are pretty fun against the current meta.

Surprise! I hear you. Holidays are busy. Two days ago I played my first game of X-Wing in more than a month and there's a Store Championship near me tomorrow, too.

You should go if your wife won't hate you for it. Throw together a swarm to counter all the YTs that'll be there and have some fun. You never know how it'll go for you.

Will going to this tournament keep you from putting your foot down and telling your wife that you are going ruin your chances of being allowed to go to a later tournament that you will be better prepared for?

Skip and prepare for the next one. The kid'll be a bit older, you can arrange for backup or have your wife and child nearby and dinner afterwards.

Yessss.... Tell me your secretsss...

Will going to this tournament... ruin your chances of being allowed to go to a later tournament that you will be better prepared for?

My wife is many things. She's smart, funny, ambitious, accomplished, tough, funny enough to mention it twice, and beautiful. One of the few things she is not, however, is fond of surprises. She's particularly not fond of surprises that leave her stuck in the house with a toddler who's trying to transition from two naps a day to one, and is consequently sleep-deprived and cranky for about half of his waking hours.

We'll see how the conversation goes, I guess.

I hate to say it, but if I hit some Store Championships this season I'll be netlisting like a mofo. Super Dash, fat Han, Soontir/Howl swarm, Biggs/Wedge/Garven/Airen, Chiraneau/Echo. It'd come down to whichever of those kinds of lists that I feel comfortable with.

If not in alot of trouble with the wife then go, we believe in you Vorpal and you'll atleast get a Soontir.

The other thing that you need to ask yourself is "Will you ever get a chance to play X-Wing in the Mormon's Garden of Eden".

Outside of Harry Truman and and being the setting for the sitcom "Mama's Family" that's really the only thing that Independence has going for it.

I just realized that "Mama's Family" was set in Raytown so Independence doesn't even have that claim to fame.

Before you have that conversation you should check to see if they even have any spots open. Many FLGS only have room for 32 to 64 and a lot of guys are already signing up (and pre-paying) at multiple stores over the next 2 months+.

Old reliable. Baron's focus. Still has teeth.

Or you could buy a bouquet of roses pack sandwiches in a basket and grab a floor blanket. And have a wonderful time. I'll let you fill in the skipped steps.

That's genius. You get her to think that the trip to Independence is some sort of romantic picnic, start setting everything up and let tell her that you forgot something, run back to the car and go play in the tournament, you come back with some wine and brie and she's none the wiser.

You sir, are my hero.

I forgot about the toddler. You need a big picnic basket because you'll need to get the toddler drunk enough to sleep through a two hour car ride inside the basket without waking up. It'll look like the kid was a stowaway when your wife finally finds him.

I can't tell you how terrible I feel for you that "nearby" for you is two hours and that you discovered it too late/just in the nick of time. (Here in the Twin Cities there's one almost every weekend for the next couple of months and the longest drive is about an hour though I only am attending one this month after showing my wife the schedule and letting her pick one). Here's hoping your wife takes pity on you.

If she does, fly whatever you have in your arsenal that can handle large base turrets and definitely kill it first and deal with the escorts later -- and hope that the phantoms play everyone else.

Best of luck and I hope to hear that you'll at least have a Soontir Fel card by tomorrow night.

4x Green squadron A wings

Chaardan, Test pilot, Push the Limit, Wingman, Hull Upgrade.

Yeah it's kinda crazy that they are starting so soon. I haven't been playing much since World's and really don't have a great list that I'm enjoying flying recently.

I didn't realize you were so close, Vorpal. You should come if you can. Would be nice to meet you.

Take a stress control list. Get super dash stressed multiple times and he becomes a 58pt bwing.

Stress also deals with phantoms.

As for the toddler situation. Just bribe your wife.

Offer to watch him next weekend while she goes gets pampered or shopping etc.

or if she's not your stereotypical lady whatever it is she enjoys but can't really do with kid in tow.

Works for me, not really bribing I suppose more a fair trade.

Sorry double post.

So what I get from this thread is your wife's ruining your game time.

The good news is girls turn 18 every day, and according to Fox give away milk for free so you don't have to buy a cow, which is goof if you don't live on a farm.

Take the kid with you. Distract your opponents with it's cuteness/ crying/ diapers. :D

Please do not do this.
