Veteran Instincts and Proximity Mine corner case

By Forgottenlore, in X-Wing Rules Questions

In a thread a while ago someone brought up the odd situation of a proximity mine nullifying a ship's veteran instincts before the VI ship was supposed to activate, but after it would have activated without the VI. I was curious about the scenario and no one else said they were going to ask FFG about it, so I did. Finally got an answer and I thought some people here might be interested.

Hello Troy,

In response to your rules question:

An interesting theoretical situation was brought up on the forums tonight. What happens if a ship with Veteran Instincts is damaged by a proximity mine which gives it the "Injured Pilot" crit (ignore EPTs like veteran instincts) after the ship's unmodified PS was supposed to go but before its VI modified PS has a chance to go.

Example,

A PS 3 Green Squad A-Wing with VI (making it PS 5) is hit by a PS 4 bomber's proximity mine and looses its veteran instincts. It is no longer PS 5, but the opportunity to activate at PS 3 has passed. What happens?

It would still activate at PS 5 but during the combat phase would be reduced to PS 3.
