Proton Rockets and Range 1

By uscsmurf, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Reading the rules of Proton Rockets, and I see you can add up to a maximum 3 dice due to a ships agility, plus the normal 2 for the attack, but do you still get the plus 1 for being at range 1 if you can get it.

The way I am reading it, if I am in an A-wing, I have 2 for attack+ 3 for agility + 1 for range 1 = 6 total attack dice? If so that's insane amount of dice for one attack.

Am I reading this correctly or no?

Close.

You cannot add range modifiers to secondary weapons.

However, you could use Opportunist to get to that number of dice if your opponent doesn't have an Evade or Focus token.

You could also use Jan Ors (the pilot) to then boost it to 7!

No, you are not reading it correctly.

The extra die for range 1 applies only to primary weapons. Proton Rockets are a secondary weapon.

Rulebook page 11:

... if he is targeting a ship at Range 1 with his primary weapon, he rolls 1 additional attack die.

@dvor and @Dracon thank you for correcting me. I don't have my rulebook at work and couldn't remember. Now I know so thank you both.

I don't have my rulebook at work and couldn't remember.

I highly recommend you get the PDF version of the rules and all the FAQ's they could be a big help. Even if you can't load them on your work computer they're still good to have somewhere.

This also applies for range 3 defense dice. For Secondary attacks at range 3, defenders do not receive an extra defense die. But shooting through an asteroid is still a bonus regardless.

And if you want to get more technical, the range added die (attack at 1, defense at 3) do not actually increase your attack/agility, they just add a die.
