Psycho Tycho and Corran Horn

By Khyros, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So, as I'm sure a few of you are aware, I've been trying oh so very hard to find a niche where Tycho and Tycho alone can exist, thus, Psycho Tycho was born:

Tycho Celchu

A Wing Test Pilot

Push the Limit

DareDevil

Experimental Interface

Chardaan Refit -OR- Proton Rockets

Total 33 -OR- 38 points

When he moves after everyone, he can almost always get out of arc or force the collision via DD to keep him safe. However, when there's a PS9+ pilot on the board, he's pretty much useless. So that means that I can't send him Phantom hunting, and it also clearly identifies the #1 target in my opponent's squad to me. But I've yet to come across something that actually compliments Psycho Tycho well... Until perhaps last night?

As more of an SnG list, I ran the following last night

Psycho Tycho w/ PRockets

Corran Horn w/ VI + R2D2 + FCS + EU

Prototype w/ CR

Total: 99 points

I really didn't expect it to do well at all, but to my surprise, I went 4-0, only losing two ships the entire night. I was running it with a hit + run type tactic. I would split the ships up along my setup, and whomever my opponent targeted, I would basically overshoot my ship, and just take the free flanking shots from the prototype and other named pilot. From there, the prototype did his annoying blocking, and Tycho outflew everyone, and Corran would stay at R2-3 in the early game, basically regenerating/blocking all damage.

Two questions to all ya'll - I technically have 21 points to play with. Tycho could drop the Prockets freeing up 5, plus the 15 from the Prototype, and 1 init bid. Is the prototype + Procket the best way to spend those 21 points? I considered using a Green w/ PTL, but decided against it for blocking reasons. But the Green w/ PTL does have its merits as well - but is it worth dropping the procket? Or should I use a Rookie so I bring another 3 dice attack?

What are your thoughts? What competitive squads would this really struggle against, and how would you modify it to make it better? Thanks.

Looks interesting, curious how it does against turrets, if you're able to turtle up enough to out gun them even with the low attacks on 2/3s of your ships.

Think you'd swap out EI for Autothrusters once they're available?

Once Autothrusters are available, I think I'm going to swap all of Tycho out for Jake. Without EI, you can't Boost -> Daredevil, only Daredevil -> Boost... And then you don't get any tokens. So imo it stops working as well. And if there's no daredevil, I may as well use Jake who has barrel roll built in =P.

As for turrets, I went against a fat chewy and a Chinareau last night, neither one presented much of a problem. The proton rockets plus double tap means that I'm dropping 13+ dice in a turn to fight through all of the defenses, most of which is TL+F. That's the main reason I decided to go with the prototype instead of the green w/ PTL though. And HLC Outriders can't actually shoot at Tycho (see my original Daredevil 101 thread for the theory which I've proved out in the real world plenty of times).

Makes sense, like it how it is for now then.

Jake frees up 5 points but definitely isn't as tricky having to rely on greens, gives you 26 points to play with but I don't know if there's anything that much better than your Proto playing blocker at that price point, maybe Tarn+R7... or a ICT+R3+Gold but they don't really fit the theme.

I really like having a prototype at 15 points. It is super maneuverable, tankier than a Z-95 and really can get in the way. It's amazing what it can do to disrupt your opponent's squad. Also, it is almost never the main target, and stays around for a while, so it's value really adds up.

Corran is great for taking out turrets, especially C-3P0 builds, because his double tap doesn't have the same defense to go through.

One more thing: have you tried expert handling on Tycho? I like the barrel roll for getting out of firing arcs better than the boost or turn. How often do you wish you could barrel roll?

With this setup, not very often. But with a standard A wing, all the time. <3 Jake for that reason. I could check out EH, but I feel like I'm then paying 32 points for a Fel-lite. Yes, I know you can do anything on your dial and aren't restricted to 2speed or straights, but still...

I love "Psycho Tycho" but prefer him with Expert Handling over Daredevil, as I love flying Interceptors and that gives him the same boost+barrel roll options (with the added bonus of a TL removal). I also use Chardaan Refit over Prockets. As much fun as he is, though, even with all the actions he struggles to put the hurt on in a timely manner. So if you're playing him competitively Prockets are probably the way to go. Personally, I would drop the Engine on Corran. Without PtL, I hate paying for abilities I'm not going to use every turn. With 20 points (Prototype + Engine + 1-point bid) you can squeeze in Lieutenant Blout with Ion Pulse Missiles to set up a deadly Procket/double-tap round.

What about Roark instead of Prototype? Helps the PS problem and gets an ion cannon on the board
