A use for Captain Kagi?

By RedDave87, in X-Wing Squad Lists

A recent post reminded that this poor neglected Shuttle pilot exists, and I started to think; what new upgrades do we have at our disposal to bring this fellow out of retirement?

I give you, the Kagi Scapegoat.

Captain Kagi (27)

+ Enhanced Scopes (1)

+ Rebel Captive (3)

+ Intelligence Agent (1)

+ Tactical Jammers (1)

= 33 points total

Move first to get in the thick of things, soak up target locks. Rebel Captive somewhat discourages people from shooting at Kagi, especially with all the two ship lists around. Tactical Jammers further provides support for his entourage.

Imperial Biggs? Or huge waste of points?

But what else to fill out the list? This build probably wouldn't help slippery fighters like Phantoms and Interceptors too much. HLC Defenders and Firesprays seem madefo this guy. Howl + a mini swarms would like the protection from Tactical Jammers.

I'm leaning towards this as a mostly for fun list:

Kagi's Convoy

Kagi Scapegoat (33)

Colonel Vessery (35)

+ Veteran Instincts (1)

+ Heavy Laser Cannon (7)

2x Academy Pilots

I thought about dropping Int. Agent to put Wingman on the Colonel, but I don't really like the idea of turning the game board into a parking lot.

Any thoughts?

The only list I've seen that I liked with Kagi had Carnor in it as well. Though that was before the rise of Predator and Lone Wolf which are now ways around not being able to TL or Focus against Carnor in the Carnor + Kagi combo... hmmm...

Ya, not sure there's a place for him at the moment, maybe once the TIE/Adv fix comes out and they become popular and everyone's trying to get TLs up but in that scenario I hope you're building Kagi to be pretty tanky.

Maybe something like:

Carnor+ VI + Autothrusters

Kagi + Sensor Jammer + Intel Agent

Echo + VI + Sensor Jammer + ACD?

Kagi + Fleet Officer

Howl + Wingman

4x Academy

2pts spare, Howl is sitting on evade and focus, and can't be target locked. Wingman allows use of Fleet without needing to green move next turn. Can add Merc copilot to give the shuttle bite (focus from fleet, reroll from howl, crit at rng 3 since you're behind the swarm) or keep initiative bid.

This is possibly my current favorite Imperial list:

Rexler Brath (37)

+ Outmaneuver (3)

Captain Kagi (27)

+ Anti-Pursuit Lasers (2)

+ Enhanced Scopes (1)

Carnor Jax (26)

+ Push the Limit (3)

Comes to 99 points which you can bid for initiative, or throw an Intelligence Agent on Kagi. Kagi uses his Scopes, Lasers, ability, and large base to block things, deal free damage, absorb Target Locks, and still shoot at PS8 (along with the other two pilots!). Jax does what Interceptors do with PtL, and with his ability alongside Kagi's shuts down a second action, Focus, which all ships have (with the added bonus of making your team immune to Blaster Turrets, but beware Prockets). Brath provides additional durable muscle that can punch through crits occasionally with Outmaneuver and his ability.

As soon as we get Scum and Villainy, I'm dropping Outmaneuver to give Brath Lone Wolf and Jax Autothrusters.

Fairly recently, I had a metagame in which a Swarm dominated everything, except for Z-95 Assault swarms.

I wound up taking it home on the last night of the league by using a naked Kagi with my academies.

I confess that I never paid much attention to Enhanced Scopes, mostly because there was much more interesting stuff to be had in the Rebel Aces pack. But the more i use them, the more I like them.

The problem I have with Kagi and why I decided to drop him in my Royal Shuttle list, is that once you have a lock on Kagi, you can lock onto someone else. So he can be easily countered by targetting him as soon as possible, then you are free to target whoever you want. He also doesn't work against Fire Control System and weapon engineer can go around. Then there is Predator and Lonewolf that give mini-TL... So in the end, I prefer to save 6 points and go with a standard OGP.

I always thought you go with kagi just for the ps and his pilot ablity is just a little bit of iceing. Being a meh ability it's understandable that its a "free" ability

For my part, moving late is more a liability for the shuttle since it is so easy to block. I could put Enhanced Scope, but then I am paying 7 points over a OGP and taking the System slot just so I can shoot at PS8 instead of 2. Not worth it for me. I tried to like him, but he failed me for the last time...

All good points. I wasn't trying to make the case for Kagi, I just felt sorry for all the named shuttle pilots that never see the light of day. A fellow can get tired of only flying OGPs every time.

I hear you. I'm also one that don't like always flying the same thing and try different things.

And I'm not saying he can't be useful. Under the right conditions, he could potentially really mess with your opponent offense. So, in a casual game, sure, let's have some fun! In a competitive build, meh, you'll be better served elsewhere.

But in the end, he's nothing like an Imperial Biggs, more like a potential nuisance.

I think it's time to find a home for Colonel Jendon next. Maybe passing out Target Locks to Tempest Squadron Pilots when ATC finally gets here.

Both Kagi and Jendon should feel right at home in Epic along side the Raider.

Kagi protecting it from Torpedo/Missile Strikes.

Jendon freeing up the need for the Raider to manual Target Lock.

In Standard they'd probably have similar roles.

Kagi is Anti-Torpedo/Missile and ATC.

Jendon is Action Economy.
