Anyone have tips or resources for running on roll20

By LORDs_diakonos, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I am going to be running the beginner game and then moving on from there in roll20.

I am wondering if anyone here has maps, images, tokens anything they can share for it.

In addition tips on setting up the map for proper ratio and measurements etc...

I have run it on roll 20.

No need to set up specific measurments, just disable the grid and move as needed.

At the time of this posting the web store is down, but when its back up, check out Maps of Mastery for some awesome maps. Most of which are Star Wars or Sci Fi. I believe Chris still has his entire omnibus for sale, but it's a limited time offer.

I have run it on roll 20.

But for rangebands and moving doesn't scale matter. Still reading source books so forgive me if I am wrong.

You're right. That's why I said to disable the grid, so any tokens can just be moved to wherever looks right for the situation instead of snapping to a meaningless grid.

OK but in that case the token size and map dimensions should matter right? I was wondering how you handle that. Any tips or anything? Sorry if I am being to picky just trying to get it right and do the best I can with it.

Also do you use any scripts?

There are a good number of star wars token/pics on roll20 to use for your pcs and npcs.

you can upload maps you have for specific encounters, but the movement in Edge is intentionally vague.

1 maneuver to move anywhere in short range, 2 to move anywhere inside medium range... etc...

I usually just use a grass, snow, sand image and stretch it to fill the area, for the backdrop.

You will have to trust the players interpretation of the dice, either using physical dice or an online roller, as Roll20 does not have the edge dice symbols, but its worked just fine for our last 3 sessions.

We also use Skype but there may be a better way to communicate between players.

You can alter the size of the token images, so a rancor is not the same size as the pcs., and the map area can be made larger to accommodate a long or extreme range battle.

I use a few scripts.

  • The Dice Roller - The standard Dice Roller for use with the API Character sheet.
  • Destiny Point Tracker - Text display of Destiny points through IRC like exclamation point commands.
  • Range Band display - Turns on/off Short/Medium range band displays as a tool for the Players.
  • Morality/Obligation/Duty roller. - Can be run to auto roll/assign Morality/Obligation/Duty to the Players with very little interaction.

Edit: Added more info about each script.

The map dimensions only matter in reference to the size of the map and the tokens used.

So a Map of this scale will use tokens this big:

But a Map of this scale might need tokens this big:

Or... since maps don't really matter in this system as much as they do in other systems you can just do something like this:

  • The Dice Roller - The standard Dice Roller for use with the API Character sheet.
  • Destiny Point Tracker - Text display of Destiny points through IRC like exclamation point commands.

Yes, Use these.

  • Range Band display - Turns on/off Short/Medium range band displays as a tool for the Players.

Don't use this. It's makes the (very common) mistake of trying to assign physical distances to range bands. It sounds like a good idea, but in practice it doesn't work so well. Also this means you'll have to make all your maps on the exact same scale.

I used the features of the platform sparingly.

Maps: I used the maps for descriptions only, and played the game more narratively with just the chat and the dice roller. I didn't actually place the tokens on the map. That way I didn't have to deal with scaling and grids.

Tokens: Use the red status bar for wounds, the blue for strain for PCs and nemeses (obvious). Red bar for wounds on Rivals. For minions, I used one token to represent a group, and the red bar was the total wound threshold of the group (invisible to players). The green bar was the number of minions, which I used to count down to zero (visible to players).

Initiative: I created generic "PC" and "NPC" tokens for the initiative tracker. That way, it had slots for the sides rather than a specific PC order.

use roll20 through google hangouts. use this die roller. https://eote-hangouts-dice-roller-release.googlecode.com/git/hangout-button.html

I was thinking about that but it doesn't collapse which I don't like and not sure if I like not have the dice log saved in the chat. not sure

I used this dice roller as well. Since I didn't really use the maps for tokens, I didn't need as much playing surface for roll20. I guess it also depends on the resolution/size of your screen though.
