New Player "Quick Start" List Guide

By MajorJuggler, in X-Wing Squad Lists

The local veteran at my local store plays Bossk with Calculation, Mangler Cannon, Recon Specialist and Mercenary Copilot.

He support it with 2 Y-wings with Twin Laser Turrets.

Next week I'm taking the Scum Y-wings with Ions, BTL Title and R4 Agromech from the list on this thread. I don't know how I'll go, given I've played a total of 5 games (with varying degrees of success) so far.

I'm looking for a good Scum Build using Bossk as the main ship? What are some ideas I can look into towards the creation of such a squadron? I would appreciate alot if abbreviations of cards are kept to a minimum so I know what im looking for. :)

I'll update the thread here sometime after Worlds with wave 7 and wave 8 (if it's spoiled) stuff. In the meantime, I really like Gunner and tactician on Bossk. For a target at range 2, you give it a stress from tactician. Remember that Tactician DOES work in the sideways auxiliary arc. Then if you miss, you attack a 2nd time and give out a 2nd stress. I view his pilot ability as a "happy mistake" that you don't need to push too hard to get. Either Veteran Instincts or Predator are solid choices. If Veteran Instincts, certainly get Engine Upgrade as well, so you can take advantage of high-pilot skill repositioning. You could even try Crackshot, that's a solid upgrade.

Also, a great combo with Bossk crew is Bossk + Gunner + Tactician. It works the same as above, but if you miss not only does it trigger gunner and tactician, you also get a TL on the target first, plus a focus token. Plus a stress on yourself if you didn't have one already, but that's not a terrible tradeoff.

Another interesting combo is gunner + tactician + mercenary copilot. Range 1, he throws 4 dice. Range 2, tactician triggers. Range 3, mercenary co-pilot gets you a crit that turns into an extra damage if it lands. Each range is bad for the opponent.

Cool! It's a very brute-force list that works well when you can start locking down stuff with ions. Against ace type pilots like Soontir Fel it can have trouble. But it's glorious when it works.

I agree. I am currently having success with:

Bossk

- Predator

- Gunner

- Tactician

Syndicate Thug

- Twin Laser Turret

- Unhinged Astromech

Syndicate Thug

- Unhinged Astromech

There are actually 5 more points left in this list and I have been experimenting with different options, right now I am using Outlaw Tech and "Hot Shot" blaster on Bossk. But that my change. Still the core of the list is working well.

I particularly agree with the statement below. The crits will happen naturally with 3 attack dice, Predator, and Gunner.

I view his (Bossk's) pilot ability as a "happy mistake" that you don't need to push too hard to get.

I've run it as a swarm and it was brutal, but with that Bossk build I know he can take down one Y per turn (maybe with help from the TLTs). I figured swarming was my best option. Of course, I'm also playing the local vet who hit Nationals this year (and who basically introduced X-Wing to the store)... so any and all advice would be great!

I just downloaded this. I can't wait to read it. I'm still 4 weeks new to the game.

I believe the lists could do with an update at this point, if you have the time. If I may, I'd like to suggest adding the following list archetypes, as they play rather differently from everything else in the list.

* Palpmobile and two aces

* Xizor + swarm

* 4 y wings with TLT and unhinged (difficulty: 0/5)

* PS 4 imperial crackswarm (with howlie)

Also, thanks, the list is great!

I would like to add my thanks to this list. I've only been playing for a couple months with 2 other friends and didn't even realize the game had world championships. it's nice to see some of the winning squads posted. I'm also happy that though I've been living mostly in a vacuum concerning this game (until I found these forums that is), that several of the squads I've built are strikingly similar to the ones listed here. this resource will provide much inspiration in tweaking my game.

Thank you very much!

I just picked up the my first set over the past weekend, The Force Awakens Starter Set. I am curious if anyone else has been using the ships from this set effectively? I'm looking to run fun lists that are easy to play without buying too much else. I had planned on trying to stick with the Resistance and First Order ships, purely for the narrative (and my ocd), but I'm certainly not opposed to getting others.

Any suggestions? New or old?

I love this. Very well put together. Good job.

Thanks! I'll be updating this list but it's at least a few weeks out. The goal at least will be to have it synced up with wave 8 once it is released.

Well, Paul Heaver won Worlds using Poe Dameron from The Force Awakens Core set.

Poe + Veteran Instincts + Autothrusters + R2-D2

Gold + BTL-A4 + Twin Laser Turret + R3-A2

Gold + Twin Laser Turret

Bandit

The runner-up also had Poe Dameron in his squad!

Poe + Veteran Instincts + R5-P9 + Autothrusters

Corran Horn + Push the Limit + R2-D2 + Fire-Control Systems + Engine Upgrade

Prototype + Chardaan Refit

Whoa cool! Thank you!

Might I suggest each entry on the list also come with a buying guide? A lot of gamers are operating on a fairly tight budget, so a list of exactly which expansions they need to complete the list and the estimated cost (in MSRP) might also be handy. I'd be happy to help out and tackle a few, if that helps.

Great compilation- thanks for the work you've put into this!

Corran with ptl is a great example of a bad idea. Every time I use it, or I've seen it used, he blows up quickly.

Nathan Eide was #2 at Worlds with Corran + PtL. It can be extremely powerful in the right hands.

Easiest way would be to take the builds, plug them into an online builder, export the XML into Han Shopped First and just provide a link or something for each entry.

Just letting you know that your link says V1.02 but the down load on the compressed file says V1.01. At least for me.

Also can you date the version?

Thanks again I use this often.

Derp. I think Mu0n volunteer to compress it for me, that one may be one version behind. I didn't realize that, thanks for pointing it out! I'll see what I can do.

In the meantime I'll come out with a new version soon, I hope. Depending on the timing of when wave 8 is fully spoiled, I may do a wave 7 version and then follow it up quickly a wave 8 version.

I'm going to remove the House Rules entirely for simplicity, and replace it with a "Competitive Level" ranking. Some of the older squads especially have not fared as well through the passage of time. And my House Rules need to be updated through wave 7-8, and they rarely get used them anyway.

Awesome, sorry I'm one of those that don't really use the house rules. But we do love the Easy, Medium and Hard ratings.

But I print them out can keep them handy. If friends come over they just grab a squad. I love this and clearly beats all my moaning an groaning of not knowing what goes with what.

I can't thank you enough.

Count me as someone who would love to see this updated. I am not a great listmaker and this has been inordinately helpful.

+1 in This.

Generaly Thank you for this list of lists, as It helped me very much to understand the game... I wend or my first tournament (escalation) with Aces and it help me to uderstand how to build a list (Juno with Soontir I like to much)

Yup, I have been spending most of my X-wing time on MathWing 3.0, but I do plan on updating this for around when wave 8 hits.

good news to star the week !!

I hope this doesn't mean removing some of the older lists completely. As someone who is more interested in casual play, those older lists are very nice for options to play some of those ships/pilots even if they aren't very competitive in a tournament type setting. If you are planning to remove them, any possibility that you could put them on a second list, just noting that they are no longer competitive?

I think I'm planning on keeping the older lists, and just assigning them a competitive ranking instead.

I'm specifically thinking of ranking each list on multiple criteria:

  • difficulty
  • overall competitiveness
  • cost efficiency
  • firing arc (i.e. turret / auxiliary)
  • maneuverability / arc dodging
  • pilot skill
  • regeneration
  • control / utility
  • alpha strike

Each category will be assigned a score between 1-5, and it will be visually represented for an "at a glance" overview. I can do it on one line, with each category pictorially represented by a "symbol" that is also color-coded according to its score.

I.e. maneuverability is represented by the boost icon, cost efficiency by a currency symbol, firing arc the turret icon, alpha strike by a torpedo, etc. Maybe for overall competitiveness I can use a mini-icon of Paul Heaver. :D

A very helpful resource. My only quibble is totally selfish. I was hoping for a basic A-Wing list for my Ace and two A-Wings. Not sure I would call a list with six of the same ship an entry level list. How many people have than many A-Wings? I know there are collectors in the game that stock up, but that seems high to me. May I suggest adding a three or four A-Wing list?
