New Player "Quick Start" List Guide

By MajorJuggler, in X-Wing Squad Lists

It's your post, but I think it's a very bad idea to included squads that require house rules in a collection aimed at new players . One of the most significant challenges of X-Wing is building lists that fit within 100 points, are legal, and competitive - it does new players a disservice to expose them to illegal lists. We all know how different it would be to add just two more points to a 100 point list for that additional EPS or upgrade that adds synergy .

Put the house rule squads in a seperate post / list if you must.

Really excellent resource, thank you for putting this together.

Not sure it wouldn't be too much work to be worthwhile but it would be handy if the lists had a note of what expansions are necessary to build them. That way new players can see what they can build with what they have or what they need for a list they want to try.

Good feedback, that's why I switched it here to default to standard rules. House Rules are fully optional. I'll update the PDF to match soon, although there were only (I think) 2 squads that required house rules.

PDF v1.01 has been uploaded! House Rules are 100% optional, but included in text form when applicable. Even if you don't use them (which I expect most people not to), it still gives you a good idea of the overall squad competitiveness.

Some delayed responses:

I would consider adding a little bit of explanation about how stress works with the "Dauntless >> Daredevil >> Dauntless >> Other Action" action stack. I've found that that's the part that some people have trouble wrapping their heads around.

Done! Check out the new text description after the squad. I hope it is helpful.

Really comprehensive list, well done putting it together.

A small critique is maybe there's too many lists that a new player would find it overwhelming? Especially where so many of the lists contain ships and upgrades that aren't even released yet or house rules... which I think I would find confusing as a new player...

The goal is to include a couple of squads for each Archetype, so there are at least a couple options for every type of list. Hopefully it provides enough options without being overwhelming.

I like to include ( fully optional! ) House Rules because:

a) I like playing with House Rules in my own group, and

b) It gives you a general idea of how large of a relative disadvantage some squads could put you at. (Generally something to avoid for new players).

I feel like every new player should have a decent Boba Fett list to pick. Does not need to be competative.

Nice. As a newer player that jumped in with both feet and bought a lot of stuff (ex 40k player); its nice to have a base line to start.

Thanks a lot for this totally awesome work, this is exactly what I was looking for. I already started a similiar but pathetic in comparison list on BGG, based on some older work from a guy who discontinued playing X-Wing and I intended to update it with the newer ships.

I thought about some of the additional stuff you did, as well, but didn't go for it because of the tremendous effort to do so. Really can't find any appropriate words to express my admiration and gratefulness, you spared me a lot of needless work!

And great pdf, too, really like it. And with all the pictures it's even easier to use with german cards than with the titles only. Thanks again!

Very cool idea, thank you for taking the time to put this together. I've been playing for a few months and have started to try and come up with lists of my own but it's handy to have something like this for inspiration. Also, there are a couple of easy ways to see what expansion one would need to buy to get a particular card. There's an online X-wing wiki, and there's the X-wing Companion App which I find very handy.

Excellent variety and very useful. Many thanks!

Bump.

Thank you for your time and effort. To bad other games systems couldn't be that thoughtful. As a new gamer myself that sure makes it easy to figure out what I'm up against.

Since wave 6 is nearly here, I have some Scum lists that I will be adding soon.

Stay tuned.... :)

Really helpful for newbies (like me and my friends), this list also helps invite people into the game, teaching it to new players, using list that real people are using, and the short description of weaknesses and such gives people a slight understanding behind the squard.
so Instead of people going grey with panic:
Me: lets play x-wing
Friend: to many options, I don't get it, lets play something else.
I can go:
Me: "what ship you like to play"?
Friend: "I like the B-wing, what can I build with that"?
Me: "Here, look at this, this is a REALLY great setup - great firesupport, or try this one its really sneaky and easy to use".
Friend: "thanks that makes sense, I'm ready to play" .
Also...
I can see there are already some really solid Scrum and Villain lists out there, any chance of an update to the list?

//Me not you

Fantastic! I think I'm going to print it and keep in with my kit. Or at the very least download it and keep it on my phone/tablet (cloud).

With this and Mission Control for scenarios (with pre-built squads) this is exactly what we need for pick up games. Very well done!

I noticed that there are squads (Victory is Mined) that is in the post but not he PDF.

P.S. can we get this topic pinned?

Yup, it's in my backlog.

Good catch. I'll fix this next update, let me know if you see any others.

You could ask an FFG admin to pin it. Or, other ways to find it:

  1. Sort the forum by most viewed, this is #1 by a wide margin
  2. On the main forum, go to the "Index of Useful Links". There's a link for it there.

Pretty sure you can add 7 Binayre Pirates w/ Feedback Array to the scum swarm list ;)

Hear ye hear ye!

I have updated this list to include 10 Scum lists from wave 6. Rebel and Imperial lists have remained unchanged, except for updating the text to indicate that wave 6 is no longer "unreleased content".

The linked PDF also incorporates these updates. If I made any mistakes then please let me know. Enjoy for your Regionals prep!

Just saw this for the first time. Really good ressource. I'll link to it in my vassal Hands-on guide. I had a section devoted to "where can I find good squads" and had no good answer. I will now put this URL in there.

Your pdf is ludicrous at 90 megs! Why is that? I tried to use an online pdf compressing website (one of my favorite, no-fuss, utilitarian websites) http://smallpdf.com/compress-pdf and it told me it couldn't do anything to it.

Good question. I have a lot of duplicated images in there, I just printed it via Cute PDF. Send me a PM and I can give you a link to the original .doc file, we can mess around with trying to make it smaller.

A one stop shop for squad building! Amaze balls! Now that i have a fairly diverse array of ships, it's rather apprent, i'm going to need more model!

I see that the OP was edited a few times in the last few days, but I have no idea how; is it possible to add an "edits" section of the OP to note any *substantial* edits (i.e. changes in squads or additions of squads, not wording changes or spelling fixes)? Or, alternatively, just noting in a new post that a substantial change has been made.

This is amazing, by the way, and nearly single-handedly responsible for getting me into X-Wing!

I did a bunch of updates as per the quoted post below corresponding to bumping the PDF rev from v 1.01 to 1.02.

Wish I had this when I first started. Could have saved me from a very painful beginning.

Only just found out about this. I would have loved to have this when I started and it's still extremely useful now. I don't know if it's been suggested before, but a 'Required expansions' line for every squadron would be extremely nice to have. That way you could see what's required to play one of your squads or find one you already own the stuff for.
