Kenkirk + Flight Instructor

By Rogue Dakotan, in X-Wing

Has anyone thought of putting Flight Instructor on Kenkirk?

He's going to be rolling a green die for most of his lifespan, so it's not a huge waste. Throw Moffy J and Isard on board and he gets pretty tanky.

Not a bad idea, but I just prefer an intelligence agent (aka ensign Ricky) over the instructor.

why not simply lonewolf kenkrik and take focus all the time?

Flight Instructor is pretty bad, especially with as expensive as it is. Assuming that you never have a focus token and you are always rolling a single defense die and are shot at by enemies that are all PS3 or higher, you will get a reroll 12.5% of the time. When you do get to reroll, you have a 37.5% chance of getting an evade. If I'm doing the math right, that means that there is slightly less than a 5% chance of Flight Instructor doing anything for you. To put that in D&D terms, Flight Instructor is only useful on a natural 20.

The odds get a little better when you roll more dice or are shot at by low PS ships but even then it isn't performing like a 4 point crew card should. If it Flight Instructor had its PS2 and lower effect against everything it might be worth 4 points. In the current high PS meta, you'd probably be better off just taking a 4 point initiative bid or strapping an Engine Upgrade onto anything that doesn't have boost.

While more efficient, it also makes 20-25% of the board (the approximate R2 bubble of a Large Ship) a no-fly zone for your escorts, if you want to use Lonewolf.

Definitely something to consider though, as a super-tanky Kenkirk quickly ends up costing more than a tricked out Chirpy.

So go for a two ship build have vessery as your wingman, both PS6 so vessery can work of kenkirks TL.

Vessery with a HLC and Kenkirk with a Weapons Engineer on board, could work.

Something like:

Commander Kenkirk — VT-49 Decimator 44
Lone Wolf 2
Ysanne Isard 4
Weapons Engineer 3
Rebel Captive 3
Dauntless 2

Colonel Vessery — TIE Defender 35
Heavy Laser Cannon 7

I like flight instructor against swarms with firesprays, but if you can take a focus action, recon spec is probably better on most occasions.

Flight Instructor is among the worst cards in the game, if not the worst. Its not a horrible buff, but for 4 freaking points it is! There are too many other crew members you can take that are better than FI for 4 points.

I tried Boba with lone wolf and flight instructor last tuesday. He proved to be surprisingly durable whenever I took an evade action and could potentially reroll both defense dice :)

Flight Instructor is very underrated. I ran the numbers on it versus C3PO on a Falcon a while back. The answer is that if that are you dealing with low pilot skill enemies, its probably the best defensive crew you can take. That being said, the current meta if for just a few, high skilled pilots so its probably not the best crew at the moment, but I am sure there are lists that make it the preferred choice.

Here are the numbers assuming only one green die rolled (I added Ysanne in as well since she is easy).

Item 1 Vs 7 attacking ships:
3PO Evades: +0.600 Efficiency: 0.2
FI 3+ Evades: +0.626 Efficiency: 0.15
FI 2- Evades: +1.613 Efficiency: 0.403

Ysanne Evades: +1 Efficiency: 0.25

Item 2 vs 4 attacking ships:
3PO Evades: +0.625 Efficiency: 0.208
FI 3+ Evades: +0.372 Efficiency: 0.093
FI 2- Evades: +0.936 Efficiency: 0.234
Ysanne Evades: +1 Efficiency: 0.25

In case 1, Engine Upgrade is probably a better use of 4 points than Flight Instructor.
