Bad lists

By UnfairBanana, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So, on a whim, our group has decided we'd be building each other's list for once. Basically the goal here is to create the worst team possible. We probably won't have a chance to play again until Wave 6 drops, so it's all fair game.

Let's see some ideas! However, there can be no useless upgrades (meaning you can't throw Targeting Computer on a ship with TL already, no Engine Upgrade on Interceptors, etc.)

EDIT: Matches will be 100 points. Ships available to use are listed below, as everyone just uses my stuff (the downside to having friends who are broke).

12 points Z-95 Bandit Pilot

Do I win? There's no minimum points when building a list.

Fair enough, but...we are still trying to make 100-pointers :P My bad.

5x Black Squadron Pilots with Expose and Targeting Computer.

can you get a decimater to 100 points? 1 ship with a bunch of upgrades and 0 agi..

can you get a decimater to 100 points? 1 ship with a bunch of upgrades and 0 agi..

No but you can get it to 82 points.

I feel like a decimator would dominate this type of game, no matter how you loaded it out:

It's hard to trump 4 HWKs as being an auto-lose list, but here's my attempt, including a ship that can only shoot at range 1 and with 3 dice:

ORS (27)

+Saboteur (2)

+Kyle Katarn (3)

+Countermeasures (3)

Eaden Vrill (32)

ORS will be mvp here.

How about:

Roark + Weapon Engineer + Shield Upgrade (27)

RO + Luke + Engine (27)

RO + Leia + Engine (24)

RO + R2D2 + Hull Upgrade (23)

Maybe crewman Luke will boost the damage too much, Roark will let people shoot too quickly, or R2D2 will keep his RO alive too long.

When you look at a challenge like this you'll be hard pressed to find any squadrons worse that four HWKs with no next to no damage boosters. They deal so little damage that just about everything else will blow them away.

...This is scary bad. Fortunately we only have 1 HWK available, because...yeah...1 dice per attack...

Making a bad list for the sake of making one is not that hard and pretty much just lead to over-upgraded ships vs over-upgraded ships. Funny at first but could make games drag on: RedDave87 list suggestion is probably the worst offender.

My personal suggestion:

Major Rhymer + Expose + 2x Advanced Proton Torpedoes + 2x Assault Missile + Proton Bomb + Engine Upgrade (61pts)

Maarek Stele + Expose + Homing Missile + Hull Upgrade (39pts)

...

You gave me an idea though that I'll try sometime. Instead of making a bad list for each other, we'll give ourselves an ''handicap'': a particular ship or pilot that we don't use often that we need to build around: Generic E-Wing, Major Rhymer, Captain Kagi, etc. This way it forces us to experiment with something we're not used to.

I like this idea. We'll call it the Underdogs league.

100 points:
Horton gains no benefit from any of the range 1 attacks he's stuck with

Corran get's nothing useful from his either, and has to move first during Movement phase
Blount has no ordinance to use and his Pilot skill is lower than the other two which makes his SL almost useless

Enjoy!

Horton Salm — Y-Wing 25
Autoblaster Turret 2
Advanced Proton Torpedoes 6

Corran Horn — E-Wing 35
Daredevil 3
Enhanced Scopes 1

Lieutenant Blount — Z-95 Headhunter 17
Squad Leader 2

4x Storm squadron TIE advanced, one with homing missiles and munitions failsafe.

More ironic after the Raider makeover.

Oh, man, this is a fun thread. I just like looking at them. I love the Maarek Stele one.

One suggestion to play with your friends is to try All Generic ships. It's pretty fun that way and you see the strength of some of the ships if everyone is generic. If you have Epic ships, it's even better this way. Very fun.

Roark + Weapon Engineer + Shield Upgrade (27)

RO + Luke + Engine (27)

RO + Leia + Engine (24)

RO + R2D2 + Hull Upgrade (23)

...the sad part about this list is that thanks to leia, for a whole turn the Hwk's dial becomes almost viable...

I just like the idea of

6x Rebel Operatives with a 4 point initiative bid!

Not sure what makes you think Leia will make the HWK's dial "viable" as the HWK dial already sucks and it would just be turning the 4s and 3b into whites. She'd give them a bit more speed but it is a far cry from allowing an entire squadron to k-turn without inducing Stress. I'll agree that with Leia the HWKs dial almost becomes viable but its still worse than pretty much everything else.

The RO horde has some merit except that does boost the damage up to six (twelve at R1) dice and is a good number of hits to take.

Swap Enhanced Scopes for Accuracy Corrector so that you can cancel all your dice (#YOLO). You really only need Darth Vader as your damage source. Gotta make it fair for the next guy.

I seem to remember coming up with something very similar to that one of the last times I say this question. The question there becomes "what do I match it up with" to get you 100 points you should have for this type of challenge.

PS. For anyone who doesn't know you NEED Enhanced Scopes to make the bird suck. Everything else is optional and I'm not sure that flying a naked Phantom is really going to suck enough when you're still throwing down 4 red dice for your primary attack. Where the Enhanced Scopes suck is that it makes Echo move and act first so that whimsical Decloaking isn't as terrifying.

I like the idea but in a game with support ships it's too easy just the make your list all support ships.

When I was paying 40k we used to do a "Must take this unit" game, forcing us to use a unit we might not otherwise use.

Maybe do something along those lines. Pick a ship and pilot, and the opponent must make a list with that in it. They can upgrade it any way they want but it has to be pilot X.

The other thing you could do is bring a list then flip a coin, heads you pay your list tails you use your opponents. You would build in some weaknesses to exploit if you have to play against your list.

Avoid Kagi, kill the bomber, then stay out of arc and whittle the shuttle down. Of course if you're stupid enough to joust with them both at the same time it might actually hurt :-P

Don't forget about the "no useless upgrades" requirement which is what the second Gunner is at it can NEVER be used.

When I think of trying to waste points with a big ship I'm thinking about a Decimator that uses Countermeasures and has two crew members who can modify Defense dice; it can have two defense dice so it avoids the "useless" restriction but is also so hard to set up that it might as well should be.
