You can even throw at Extreme range, which in the example above would be 36 metres. The penalty to hit doesn't matter much, as missing only means you will scatter by 1d5 meters.

And a Frag has a blast radius of 4, so only in 1 of 5 misses will you actually miss :)

This means that even the most inept thrower (low BS) will be effective with Frag grenades at up to extreme range with an 80% hit rate. Nice, eh? That and flamers are the poor shooters friends.

Edit: I see they've reduce the Blast value to 3 in DH 2.0, which does reduce the chances in the above example from 80% to 60%. Still not bad, but not that great either.

that's still the equivalent of 60 BS + whatever the penalties for extreme range are. That's not something people with a gun are going to get at low levels, so it still seems plenty good to me :)

Grenade has the advantage of AOE, while a rifle has the advantage of longer range (grenade would stop at 36m max range in the above example) and how much ammo you can carry

I meant the chance of hitting more than anything else. in you example the guy with a rifle has a 30+10 = 40% hit chance, while the grenade has a 60% chance to hit, assuming the rifle has no sights etc. You're right that the rifle has more ammo most of the time and that it has longer range until you become a space marine :P

I was talking about chance to hit as well. At grenade range a rifle is most likely still in short range, so that adds another 10, for a total of 50 vs 60 BS or equivalent.
