Would it be worthwhile to make this purchase?

I know a store that is offering to sell the Rebel Transport for $40. Would it be worthwhile to make that purchase?

I have never played Epic, but I do plan to get the Raider when it comes out and would like a Rebel counterpart for that ship. I don't really care about the fluff. The Tantive IV looks OK, but I don't like how about the only useful component of that set for standard 100 point games (which is what I usually play) is the C-3PO card, which has somewhat limited use (only seen it with Falcons). The Rebel Transport has the X-Wing, which comes with some interesting pilots (Tarn Mison, Wes Jendon) and at least one interesting droid (the stress droid, forgot name).

Your advice/opinions would be much appreciated. $ is not really an issue, but I want to make sure that the Rebel Transport set would actually be worth my while and be of some use before I buy it. Not too interested in spending $40 for a paperweight. ;)

I think that the X-Wing plus the other pilots are worth the $40.

I would say yes. You get an extra X wing as well as great pilots. Tarn is my favorite from the set. I have used the transport once and probably wont in the future but the x wings are great.

I've found the Transport fun to play. They are cheap enough that you can still fly a sizable fighter fleet with them and occasionally running over a ship is great fun!

Mind you, I haven't ever won with epic ships in my fleet, but I'm getting closer each time I try.

And the pilot and upgrade cards and the alternate paint mini are gravy.

Once you've got the transport you'll probably use it. It's a surprisingly fun ship, and the Hoth Campaign in of itself is great.

I took a transport with engine booster, the stress jammer and the repair bot along with a ORS and Vrill vs a super dash and Chewy list. Managed to run over both ships, but I was using modified rules where you roll red dice equal to the remaining hull and shields. Made it less lethal but still very dangerous. it was a very interesting fight.

Yes its worth it! Its the cheaper end of epic so best to start there.

The price seems about right so if you're looking at possible uses it is probably alright.

totes.

I wish I could have paid 40 for it. It's like getting a decimator, but with many more options! Epic...new x-wing pilots...new droids...elite talents on salm....the list just goes on and on!

(not knocking the decimator at all).

Also the model is quite pretty and it will give you an epic base to mount your Decimator on. Deci in an epic base makes for much better ramming.

If you play friendly games, I'm sure people will let you bring a transport in a 100 point list. It can actually be a great support ship in the ~35-40 point range. Are the X-Wing pilots and other cards worth $40 by them selves? Maybe. If you won't notice the money is gone, then yes, do it. :)

Well if you look at the value that is a $90 product almost at 50% off. But you do got a point, how often do you use the rebel transport. For me I'd used mine well I haven't yet, I used My CR-90 once and that is it. However I have used the pilots a few times and have used the upgrades A LOT!

So from a standard point of view. You get an exclusive X-wing model and some upgrades. So a single X-wing booster pack is about $15 dollars so if you look at it from that point of view you are paying 260% of a standard booster. But lets take a look at the X-wing booster and the cards you can play in standard from the rebel transport expansions.

The X-wing pack comes with 2 unique pilots, Red Squadron and Rookie Pilot which are also found in the core. 2 EPTs which are found in core and or other packs. 1 unique astromech (that is a little too random). and 2 other upgrades that you can find elsewhere. So not that much $15 gives you 2 unique pilots and copies of some upgrades.

Now excluding the Rebel transport and all the "Huge Ship Only" cards and including the ones that can only be played in standard 100 point match you get 4 Unique X-wing pilots, a Red squadron and a rookie pilot (which are only fillers). 3 Copies of the best torpedo upgrade in the game (E-wings only have 1, still not bad considering the mediocracy of torpedo weapons in the current meta), and 4 unique astromech upgrades which are some of the best in the game (R3-A2 the stress bot, and R2-D6 the droid that gives Y-wings and Generics an EPT slot.)

So when you compare the two yeah it is still only one ship but you get 4 unique pilots and 4 exclusive upgrades compared to 2 unique pilots and a few copies of upgrades. You can say that the value for Standard play is around $40 for twice as many exclusive pilots and 4 times as many exclusive upgrades (that don't suck). So I will say

Good Buy

personally if money is NOT a problem buy both the Tantive and the transport.. I picked up a second tantive that miniature market had as a deal of the day. think it was around 40 ish. lumped it in with scum so i get free shipping. Going to make it into an Imperial version. Of course i planned all that back before the Raider was announced. But it really doesn't change my plans as i was a "Collector" first anyway..

I am very happy with the new X-wing pilots and the astromechs. There is a lot of synergy with the various pilots: Tarn w/ R7; Porkins w/ R5-D8; Hobbie w/ R3-A2. Also, R7-T1 works great with Dutch Vander. I really like the new X-wing pilots.

Might I also suggest you play a game of epic? I'd recommend building the lists ahead of time and making it a multiplayer game. I ran the Tantive IV w/ 4 X-wings vs. 200 pts of Tie Fighters, Tie Interceptors, Tie Advanced, a Tie Bomber, and a Lambda. Once I had the lists written up, I broke them up into 50 pt groupings for people to take over. I'd get people who never played the game or people who knew how, but wanted some fun. It was great! I used all generic pilots, too. Nothing like having a squadron of 6 Tie Fighters flanking a big ship with guns blazing. I think Epic is a different beast than the 100 vs 100. It's a lot of fun. Avoid the named guys as it's themeatic, and you will just forget the special abilities.
