TANK BATTLE!

By Reofecthegreat, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

I am trying to develop a huge tank battle for my players to participate in. I am not sure about the vehicles to use or how to organize it.

None of my players have any talents from Stay on Target yet and it seems like it has more talents to help with ground vehicle combat then the core book but I was going to splash in some talents for the opposition and their supporters.

What sort of tank vehicles would the Rebellion use against the Empire and I suppose what sort of tank would the Empire use?

I think I remember using a Tie Mauler in the Empire at war game but I don't recall what the Rebellion used off hand or if they have stats in any books. I will also admit I am being lazy and asking you guys here instead of looking but thanks for the help.

There are a few walker-sized vehicles in the various books, as well as landspeeder-type and airspeeder-type vehicles. Unless they're primarily pilot- or driver-type characters, though, I think a more desperate, scrappy fight might be appropriate--look to the Battle of Hoth for inspiration. What if the Imps had tanks (AT-AT's, AT-ST's, and others), and the rebels only had a few vehicles and some anti-tank weapons?

Appropriate vehicles would of course include the AT-AT and AT-ST from AoR, the Mauler Tactical Responder, Panther Police Interceptor, All Terrain Riot Control Transport from Far Horizons, and any of the airspeeders from Dangerous Covenants. In addition, Dangerous Covenants has some easy templates for converting non-military vehicles into makeshift military vehicles--perfect for the Rebellion.

This game is really hurting for non-walker military vehicles on the ground, especially for the rebels. And the Imperial tank from Stay on Target was really disappointing.

The 1-L isn't that bad... Remember it is a scout vehicle for real tanks. You could use it as a baseline and build a heavy version of it.

You could swap out the blaster for a Medium Laser Cannon, add in a forward mounted Auto Blaster or Light Blaster Cannon for a second gunner. Wookieepedia says it had side-mounted weapons, so give it a couple Hardpoints.

I would keep it Speed 2, maybe Handling 0 or -1. Up the Armor to 5, 35 Hull Trauma, 30 System Strain.

I wonder what you would do with the point-defense weapons on this:

Maybe give it a trait that allows it to upgrade the difficulty of missile attacks against it or nearby allies for an action (i.e., firing the point-defense weapons)?

I was worried about this. There are enough Pilot/Driver characters for it to be worth wile but I was thinking of having them in 2 heavy tanks so 2 pilots 2 gunners and the extra crew member that handles things like emergency repairs and the secondary weapons.

I will make up some stats based around the ground vehicles with tracks and wheels. I suppose I could use a hover tank since they were in universe somewhere if I recall correctly.

When I come up something I will share it here.

Something like the S-1 Firehawke might work.

Id probably stat it at something like

Sil3, speed 2, handling0, armor 3, ht 18ish, ss 10 ish, equipped with a light laser cannon for the main gun, and a light blaster cannon or heavy repeater for the secondary gun.

There's lots more to work with though.

Floating fortresses

Freerunners

Heavy trackers

ULAVs

Chariot command speeders

The imperial tank line

All the walkers of course, and conventional horse-cav of course...

Look on Wookieepedia; they have a number of canon and semi-canon hovertanks. One appears in the prequels as a weapon of the Trade Federation during their invasion of Naboo.

Yeah the ground vehicle selection was probably the most disappointing section of the AOR Core book to me. I'm hoping the soldier and commander books add a lot more ground vehicles. If I were at FFG I would probably put the Chariots in the commander book in fact

Be careful though, if a thing only appears in a single source, there's probably a reason. Empire at War/Forces of Corruption is one of the more serial offenders, having redone or created a lot of questionable material to fit a specific game requirement that a wookieepedia editor then copied down as gospel.

Like everything in the Zann Consortium (probably the single dumbest thing ever conceived in the old EU, and I know that's a gutsy assertion), which didn't make sense in canon or even within the game's mechanical balance.

I. Hate. The. Consortium. I was disappointed when EotE even gave them a paragraph.

I more hate the idea of the Consortium then their hardware honestly. I could understand wanting a third faction but a criminal cartel no one before had ever heard of with enough firepower to take on the Rebellion and the Empire was an utterly insane idea. It would have been better IMO to use a coalition of CIS holdouts with pirate and Mandalorian allies rather then a new criminal super-cartel

I'm pretty sure that the rebellion was at a point where they were welding rocket pods and laser cannons to land speeders and calling it a day

Let's say it has armor 1, hull trauma of 4, system strain of 4, speed 3, handling of 2.

It's armament could consist of dual front mounted light repeating blasters, a laser cannon turret, and two rocket pods from the Dangerous Covenants book

The Rebellion never did really have a true "counter" to the AT-AT or the heavier Imperial hovertanks. However, Rebel armor always had that speed advantage, with the exception of the T-4b heavy tank. Personally, if you're doing a major armored assault, rebel T-4b and T-3b tanks should be the spearhead, with lighter armored speeders working around the edges, firing rockets into the Imperial

Statting these out should be pretty easy. I'm sure LibrariaNPC could stat them if he pops in and has the time/desire to do so. Failing that, I could give it a shot.
