Firespray ideas for a new guy?

By nigeltastic, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I've recently started playing x-wing, and I really would like to play a firespray mini swarm list.

I've seen several threads here and there and was wondering if fettigator lists are still legit (might be able to be mobile enough to lay shots on the phantoms) or if there's any other build that works well and is fun.

My initial thought is Boba Fett + VI + Navigator + Engine (47) with 3x Obsidian (13 each) and 1x Black Squadron (14) for 100 points total. Ideally losing the initiative so Fettigator gets to move absolutely last. Is it a better idea to just go 4 academies and a proton bomb or the higher ps ties?

What other builds do people like? Is this build decent?

If I've only got a couple of TIEs, I usually like to make them Acedemy Pilots instead of Obsidians. I know they are more susceptible to Predator but I think that they make better blockers. I also don't think you get much out of a Black Squadron unless you are giving him an EPT. I'd probably go with 3 APs, Backstabber, and a point left over as a small initiative bid.

I've haven't been able to get much out of Fettigator because I always feel the need to mess with moves and end up getting myself into trouble. That's definitely a play style issue and in the hands of someone that wasn't compelled to use Navigator and Fett's ability whenever possible is probably much better. I would probably switch Navigator out for Recon Specialist since between Fett's ability and Engine Upgrade Fett has a lot of options to react to lower PS opponents. I've found that having 2 Focus tokens increases the durability of Firesprays nicely.

I'm of the thought that Navigator usually isn't worth the points, the difference from the repositioning available from it when going from a 1 to a 3 bank is a 1 base length difference, but if you've misjudged your opponents manuevers by that much you're probably going to get blocked either way, either by other ships or asteroids. Once you try flying it you realize you rarely actually want to switch directions due to position on the map, asteroids or other ships anyway, there's a reason you were going left instead of right in the first place.

The engine upgrade will help fill the gap of losing navigator, and in the now open crew slot you can put in Rebel Captive or Gunner (or something else but preferably something that doesn't require an action so you can make use of your EU).

Also I'd recommend keeping the TIEs as Academies, unless you're putting something like Wingman on a Black, you're better off having them as blockers and using them to help keep Fett's path open.

I've had a lot of success with the Krassis mini swarm in this article: http://fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=4851

I don't care for Swarm Tactics, so I've used Recon Specialist or Rebel Captive instead.

Having your pawns all the same PS helps tremendously as well.

I think Fettigator might be worth while with the new Dash builds. I've not tried it, though. Might be better to go with Krassis + HLC, though.

Personally, I'm waiting for the Mangler Cannon. It will make Imperial Kath and Krassis better.

Agreed with all the above. Since wave 5 The Fett has become stronk. You guys should consider giving Ysanne a crack on him at some stage with the EPT Lone Wolf. Chuck on a HLC and you have a tanky as heck 4 attack monster ;)

I ran the Fettigator tonight (alongside a Decimator) and popped an Echo and two Interceptors. The Navigator and EU combo allows you to get out of firing arcs as well as line up shots. I think most of my shots were out of Fetts rear end (so-to-speak)!

Excellent discussion so far, thanks everyone. What are thoughts about possibly using tactician to destroy those you've put in an awkward position by shooting out the rear arc? Is that a viable way to abuse the maneuverability? Is something like gunner just a better use of points to increase offense?

I fly Trelix + HLC + Engine Upgrade, Carnor Jax + PTL. Academy Pilots x 2. I've had good success with this build and consider it my "go to". Get Jax in nice and close to nullify the focus and evades. Blast away with HLC and Trelix's ability for good measure.

Kath /w Predator and Rebel Captive

Howlrunner

Obsidian Sq. x2

Academy Pilot x1

I love tactician but only on ships that have multiple crew slots. On a Firespray it's a little 'meh' as there are better crew options. Gunner works well with HLC builds but I've had game where I've hardly used it. I think I prefer Predator for an initial re-roll.

Heres a thought.. take your Obsidians down to Academies, and give the Black Squad pilot Intimidation and use him to hinder your occasional fat style Han, yet still have a ship that can muck up anyones day..

Just thoughts... I may be using that tactic at my store tourney this weekend.. still hashing out what I'm flying saturday

One of my favourite higher-point Firespray builds is Boba Fett with Lone Wolf, Gunner, Engine Upgrade. Clocks in at 50 points, on the dot, can boost every turn and maneuver very well while maintains both offensive and defensive re-rolling.

You can do a lot with the remaining 50 points. 4 x Academy Pilors and then leaving it at 98 for initiative is pretty solid. Patrol Leader with Vader and Gunner can also put out plenty of hurt.

I'd rather go with Rebel Captive than Tactician.

Baron's Focus is probably still my most successful FS list:

Fel + upgrades of choice

BH + Recon

Backstabber

Nightbeast

Not quite a mini swarm but it does have some good punch and good staying power. Fel+ auto-thrusters is great in this meta, BH tanks and takes the heat or if they refuse gives you a solid end game ship as long as you kill off high PS. Backstabber either draws hate fire or punishes you for not hating him and a well flown Nightbeast is one of the most flexible ships in the game.

Forum Search: Developing List: Baron's Focus. There's a multi-page discussion on it.

I've reworked my list and found a build I'm really enjoying, if anyone wants to hear.

Bounty Hunter - 33

Ion cannon - 3 (36)

Mauler Mithil - 17 (53)

Marksmanship - 3 (56)

Dark Curse - 16 (72)

Backstabber - 16 (88)

Academy - 12 (100)

I run the academy with the firespray to movement and action block while the named ties roam as a hit squad, with backstabber breaking off for full flanks as available. It's very fun and seems to be pretty robust, as I've had several games that seemed lost, but I was able to win in the end.

Do you notice any issues with firepower when only playing 2 ships? I would worry that 4+ ship lists would do fairly well against it because of the increased number of guns they fly.
