Adding or Subtracting Heroes in a Campaign

By MatheMattical, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Hey all,

Do the campaigns typically require you to keep the same group of people for each campaign play through? Is it easy to swap people in and out? and/or add or reduce the amount of heroes?

On the one hand, I really want to play right away, but on the other, I'd like to feel out our gaming group to see who would be dedicated to playing this on a regular basis (vs. just one night of gaming and then never touch it again).

I feel like it might be in better interest to play with a smaller, dedicated group if adding/reducing the hero count isn't really supported.

Thanks!

You can always run multiple campaigns. Start a campaign to familiarize yourself with the rules. If it turns into a full-on campaign, great. If not, start another.

A campaign is probably about 4 to 6 hours of gaming. It is easy to start new campaigns or pick up old ones where you left off.

Yes, the campaign is meant for sticking with the same group in the same roles throughout. However, swapping players in and out is do-able, swapping characters takes some extra book keeping, adding and subtracting players can be a little more on the difficult side.

Essentially the game is built with giving credits and experience every mission. So with swapping players but keeping the same characters, there'll be some disconnect in how credits and XP are spent - one set of players wouldn't have bought something a different set of players would have bought for instance, same for what would be spent on their individual XP. Swapping characters means keeping track of total XP and basically letting the new players get whatever XP they old players had; the problem here is that some bought items might just not fit well with the new characters (maybe the old group bought a bunch of melee stuff, but not the new group is meant more for ranged combat).

The difficulty with adding and subtracting players comes mostly with how credits are handed out, which is basically given to each player in a mission. So then it becomes a little bit of a balancing act; whereas with adding players, you can just increase their credits by following the win/loss conditions of previous missions for each player that gets added, subtracting players means you need to subtract credits that may not be there because they were spent on items.

If you and the other players don't care quite so much about the whole overall winner/loser aspect and are more just interested in playing, then you probably don't need to put quite so much effort into trying to balance everything.

Also, if you're just adding 1 player in temporarily, there are opportunities for the Rebels to earn allies; the player can then play as the ally when they can be brought in.
