Embers of Hope versus Vader's TIE Advanced

By SoupViking, in Star Wars: The Card Game - Rules Questions

The objective 'Embers of Hope' prevents an opponent from draw-card mechanics if undamaged. Vader's TIE Advanced tells me to discard a card to gain said card's combat abilities.

Will the 'Embers of Hope' ability stop the 'Vader's TIE Advanced' ability?

Embers of hope should stop all card draw effects on the dark side.

No. The Reaction of Vader's TIE Advanced does not actually draw a card, so it is not affected by the effect of Embers of Hope.

That became the crux of the discussion: is discarding a card considered drawing a card?

It is not. Drawing is the action of taking the top card of your (randomized) deck and placing it in your hand. The Reaction of Vader's TIE Advanced simply sends the top card of your deck to the discard pile, it never goes into your hand. Now if Vader's TIE Advanced said "Reaction: Draw 1 card, then discard 1 card from your hand..." the effect of Embers of Hope would prevent it.

Short version: If the card doesn't say "draw", then it's not a draw effect.

Discarding is definitely not drawing a card. Discarding as a term is defined on pg 13 of the rules with no mention of drawing

Thank you all for your time and attention.
