Chewbacca + ZZZZ. Which build, though?

By jesper_h, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Let's say you have 4 x Bandit Squadron Pilots (48) and 52 points left to spend. You decide to go for Chewbacca. That's 10 points on upgrades. What do you go for?

Heavy-action defensive (99)

Chewbacca (42), Push the Limit (3), C3PO(3), Jan Ors (2), Millennium Falcon (1)

4 x Bandit Squadron (48)

No-action defensive (99)

Chewbacca (42), Determination (1), C3PO (3), R2-D2 (4), Millennium Falcon (1)

4 x Bandit Squadron (48)

Heavy-action all-rounder (100)

Chewbacca (42), Push the Limit (3), C3PO (3), Kyle Katarn (3), Millennium Falcon (1)

4 x Bandit Squadron (48)

No-action damage (99)

Chewbacca (42), Predator (3), Gunner (5), Millennium Falcon (1)

4 x Bandit Squadron (48)

Bonus Option

Just take Han Solo instead.

I'd be tempted mostly by the Heavy Action defensive build because it lets you stack a solid amount of damage mitigation for the most part. But Predator Gunner Title means even if you bump (which you probably want to bump enemy ships to mitigate damage anyway) You will probably put damage on things.

Heavy action defensive; Jan Ors sadly doesn't give ecade tokens to chewbacca himself, only to the Z's, who prefer focus.

No-action defense; chewbacca's ability to flip face up damage cards makes determination unnecessary.

Heavyaction all rounder; good synergy between getting rid of stress of PtL and ability of kyle katarn.

No action; as much as I like the thought of two wookies on a YT-1300 I seem to remember it is one of the worst combinations on the falcon.

Conclusion: the heavy action all rounder it is!

:-)

Just to clear some things up:

1. Jan Ors (Crew) does indeed trigger on the ship she's on, as per the FAQ a ship counts as being within Range 1 of itself. That first Chewbacca build can therefore get 3 guaranteed evades (evade token, focus token + Jan, C3PO) per turn.

2. Determination is actually very good for Chewbacca. One third of crits are Pilot , which means Determination not only discards those, but allows you to "filter" any incoming faceup damage cards for use with R2-D2 later to minimise the risk of flipping a Pilot one and rendering his pilot ability redundant.

It would also be interesting to know the maths on whether Predator + Gunner or Focus + Target Lock is more effective, offensively.

This is what I would run...

Chewbacca (42)
Draw Their Fire (1)
Lando Calrissian (3)
C-3PO (3)
Experimental Interface (3)
Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)
Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)
Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)
Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)
Total: 100

1. I had missed that! That makes it a lot better than I considered.

2. I see now what you mean, you use it as an extra filter. Interesting... :)

I think I like heavy action all-rounder in this list. Chewie will probably be fighting from a distance initially (bandits will take up some room up close), so he should have his actions. After the bandits go down, he should have enough room to get actions up close as well, or at least have time to thin out the problem blockers. I don't really have a strong conviction either way, though. No action defense is kind of fun if you think about Chewie as a big blocker, and set up the Bandits around ambushing whatever high PS pilot gets blocked.

Isn't Draw Their Fire a little counter-productive? You want Chewbacca to stay alive until time is called. He's the obvious priority target. Why pull even more damage over to him?

You may as well do:

Chewbacca (42), Push the Limit (3), Lando Calrissian (3), C3PO (3), Millennium Falcon (1)

This would let you trigger Lando first , see what you get, then take either Focus or Evade depending on what the results were. Up to 4 evades per turn.

You dont have to use it. But to be able to save a Bandit that would have died from that crit is well worth a point I think, the other option would be Determination, but I do feel that being able to take that crit from a dying Bandit is worth more. How many times have not that 1HP ship saved the day?

Sure, that makes sense.

Keep in mind that Determination only checks when cards are dealt face up. If Chewie is dealt a pilot critical as a face-down card and then R2-D2 flips it face-up the wookie suffers. Determination is nice because if he is dealt a face-up pilot card the EPT does get rid of it before Chewie's ability would turn it over.

I'm not sure why someone would consider Gunner a waste on Chewie; it's still a second attack if the first misses although there is that issue with not getting to modify it although Predator can help fix that. My choice would be the "no action damage" build or something closer to it.
