Control Lists (Ions and Blocking)

By w1ndst0rm, in X-Wing

In the paper, rock, scissor talk I don't see a lot of talk about control lists. Does anyone else out there fly them? I have one that works great in the two ship meta. Flying ships off boards and on to rocks is great - especially when you block them onto the same rock again...

What are some control lists you have seen?
Do these message boards think they are viable?

(Or do you all want to deal damage instead?)

I see the merits of including control elements in standard lists, particularly stress. The full rebel control list has looked interesting too. A friend of mine will sometimes play Ys with r3a2 and ion turret, its frustrating to go against. To me though they still seem vulnerable to phantoms and thier ilk though

Control lists are little one side currently. Mara Jade and Rebel Captive are nice but they are sort of incidental and not something you can really focus on. Imperials don't have access to the Ion Turret or R3-A2 which are both powerful control tools. They also lack a cheap Ion platform. The Shuttle is cheaper than a B-Wing but it really needs more points dumped into it to be a viable control option (most notably it really needs an Engine Upgrade to keep from being outmaneuvered too badly).

The Rebel control list that made it into the top 32 at Worlds looks fun. If I remember correctly it was:

3 x Blue Squad w/E2 + Tactician

1 x Gold Squad w/Ion Cannon Turret + R3-A2

I haven't played the list yet but it seems like its big weakness is its low PS and slow ships.

I really enjoy the 3 B's with 1 Y list. I find it a boat load of fun, and it can really slow down the pace of the game. Haven't had to fly it against a Phantom yet, but I imagine stress/ion could slow it down quite a bit. You don't have to hit them for Tactician to kick in, keep that in mind. I have also tried using the B's built with E2 + Tactician and flown them with Eaden Vrill, and that's fun too if you want a non-turret YT-2400.

So more stress than ion for control?
Stress doesn't seem to bother me but I do fly A-Wings...
Ion seems more powerful to me (especially the pulse missiles) because my swarm will be there waiting for them at the end of their 1 forward.

Who is stress hurting in the meta? Phantoms, PTL, what else?

If you can double stress a ship it hurts anyone that wants to take actions.

Control is, will, and SHOULD be a more common thing in the upcoming season. Ion control will be a great answer for all those Decimators, and stress control will be USED by the Decimators.

I'm just waiting to run into it more before I switch from using some of my recent lists.

I will add, I regularly run stress control, either with Rebel Captive, Mara Jade, and Tactician on imperial lists, or double B Wings + Tactician + E2, and it is not only a blast to use, but very effective. The great part about Stress is you can generally fly a list like normal, even pick out normal targets, and still end up getting some great benefits from stressing a few ships.

My favorite controll fleet (heavy on the troll) is 3x Outer Rim Smugglers with Intel Agents, Navigators, and Anti-Pursuit Lasers.

I see where you're going
Unless you're level 1 with initiative, or have Enhanced Scopes, I get there first, and take my actions.

You run into me, lose your actions, and get hurt.

Repeat.

Taking actions is important, as my other two ORS can still shoot at you when you run into the third.

The BlockORS is still a good form of control in a mixed fleet, as the victimized ship will be stalled increasingly away from the zone of combat, swiftly losing any targets at all.

Double stress really hurts the push the limit Dash builds.

This is my control list that is 8 and 1. My 1 loss I did a bunch of stupid things and bumped myself a lot so I should have had a much better result.

Rookie with R3-A2

Blue with Tactician and Ion Cannon

Reb Op with Tactician and Ion Turret

Roark with Tactician and Ion Turret

Its quite common for my enemy to not place any dials and so my games usually end in 30 mins and I usually only lose 1 ship. Walked about 6 large ships off the map too counting some of my other attempts before this list (about 12 games total).

That was my list that I flew at worlds. It worked against Phantoms, it worked against Soontir, it worked against Fat Han. It's a solid build. The card that hurt me the most was Predator. Control is definitely a strong squad type. I think Rebels have it easier, but the Imps have some really great cards for stress effects now. It's a fun list and like Phild0 said, you don't really have to change how you fly that much to do full damage and stack a stress effect on your opponent.
