Ship AND asteroid as obstacles in one attack??

By Plainsman, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I have searched and searched for this scenario/question here in the forums and in the FAQ and can't find anything one way or the other. Would somebody please point it out in the rules/FAQ if it exists or is it something we need clarified in the FAQ if it doesn't.

If a ship that is acting as an obstacle AND an asteroid are both obstructing a single attack, do they each given a bonus evade die or is it only one die?

Thank you!

Are you talking about a huge ship being used as an obstacle?

Not that it really matters to answer your question. Page 20 of the rulebook, under attacking through obstacles makes it clear that you do not count how many obstacles the line of fire crosses, you are only concerned whether it crosses an obstacle or it doesn't. If it does, the attack is "obstructed". That is a binary condition, an attack is either obstructed or it isn't. If it is, then you roll an extra defense die (which is not the same as agility).

The ONLY time being obstructed adds more than 1 die is in the case of EM emitters on huge ships in epic play.

Edit: that took a while to type and look up the reference, how did I not get ninja'd?

Probably referring to a ship using Tactical Jammer, maybe?

More specifically, I am thinking of a large ship with Tactical Jammer and an asteroid. I could see being able to stack two dice for evades because they don't outright say the ship is an "obstacle" rather it "obstructs"... Hence, the asteroid is the only "obstacle" while the ship is a "ship that obstructs!"

I know its splitting hairs, but Im sure Im not the only who could see it that way and Id rather have a clarification before it ever comes up!

Ah, but the rules don't say that an obstacle adds a defense dice. Per pg 20, attacks that are considered obstructed roll an extra defense dice (and obstacles are given as a way that a shot can be obstructed). So it's true that the ship with Tactical Jammer does not count as an obstacle, but that doesn't change the fact that a shot being obstructed is still a binary condition no matter how many things obstruct it.

AGREED!! Thank you! I was missing it!

" if the edge of the range ruler between the closest points of the two ships overlaps an obstacle token, the attack is considered oBStructed."

They define it as "obstructed" which keeps things consistent and therefore Tactical Jammer and an asteroid would NOT stack!

Thank you for the clarification!

Insted of making a new post I will ask this here. If my movement template, and ships base pass over more then 1 obstical Do i take multiple Die rolls for dmg? Or Is it only 1?

Just the one.

Page 18 of the FAQ

Q: After a ship moves through or overlaps more than one obstacle, does the ship suffer the effect of each obstacle?

A: No. His opponent chooses one of those obstacles; the ship suffers the effects of the chosen obstacle.
