mareek vs leebo order question.

By Hobojebus, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Leebo

"When you are dealt a faceup Damage card, draw 1 additional Damage card, choose 1 to resolve, and discard the other."

Vs

Mareek

"When your attack deals a faceup Damage card to the defender, instead draw 3 Damage cards, choose 1 to deal and discard the others."

I'm a little foggy on the order, I assume mareek chooses first and then leebo draws and picks but looking at the order of resolution that all deals with what happens before the crit is dealt.

I did try to Google this but came up blank.

My thought is that Mareek goes first. He gets to look at card before deciding which one to actually deal. That card is then dealt to Leebo triggering his ability.

Mareek's ability replaces the "attack dealing a face up card" to determine which card is dealt. Leebo then goes and picks up another to decide which one actually sticks.

I'll admit this is all speculation but if you consider that the defender (Leebo) would get to modify defense last this makes more sense to me.

That's the way I would read it as well. Maarek chooses, then Leebo chooses.

Cool thought I had it right but figured it's bound to come so never hurts to hear others opinions.

It looks simultaneous to me, which means its up to the player with Initiative.

There's nothing in there to interrupt or change the order, so it all falls into place quite logically. Maarek hits and deals a faceup damage card, which he gets to choose, and then Leebo can do his thing with that and the extra card that he has to draw.

Leebo can't do anything until Maarek has decided which card is being dealt.

It's not. Until maarek uses his ability there is no card being dealt to leebo so leebo can't actually trigger until after maarek's ability gets used. Once that little piece of timing sinks in the rest of it follows quite obviously.

While I agree with what I'm seeing here.

I think it would be fun if Maarek drew three then gave two to Leebo and he had to choose from those.

It would be fun but completely off. Such an arrangement would still go a long ways towards favoring Maarek.

StevenO is right.

Marek takes 3 and selects which one to deal.

Leebo is dealt that card, and his ability triggers, so he gets to take another and choose which one to suffer.

You can at least get rid of two weaker damage cards and hope the second card level draws is as nasty as the one mareek chooses.

I'd love to see MS draw 3 cards and pick one for Leebo, then Leebo's ability triggers, so MS draws another 3 cards and picks one for Leebo, then Leebo chooses from between the two that MS passed him.

That said, I suspect MS draws his 3, then Leebo draws a spare and picks between the one MS hands him and the one he drew.

Your suspicion matches the FAQ.

What's with all the conjecture on this? This is called out explicitly in the FAQ:

Maarek draws 3, chooses one to give to leebo, then leebo draws an additional one and chooses from those two.

I would just chime in and agree with the consensus. Maarek first, then Leebo.

You can't have something until you have it.
