Noob LFG in Baltimore, MD area

By Earle Wood, in X-Wing Organized Play

Hi guys,

I'm new to X-Wing and I'm looking for games in the Baltimore area, specifically Glen Burnie. Since I'm new to tabletop gaming in general (besides generic game night with the family), I'm not sure how to go about finding others to play.

I'm flying solo on this so I need your help! :) How do I find opportunities to play games in the Baltimore area.

Fortunately you have two good stores in the Glen Burnie area.

Games and Stuff

G&S has a monthly tournament first Saturday of the month, and their X-Wing night is every Wednesday.

Dropzone Games

Not sure about organized play, but they have space and a light table for playing on.

I personally go to G&S for X-Wing, but they're both good stores.

Thanks emsgoof, I am pretty lucky to live close to two very good stores. The staff at G&S is very friendly. I haven't been to Dropzone yet so I'll have to check them out.

So I have a few follow up questions. How does the X-Wing Night at G&S work? Do I just show at the store and hope to meet someone to play a game with? Is there someone there to help with matchmaking? I'm embarrassed to say that I'm a bit shy and would find it difficult to walk into a new place and start introducing myself to random people.

Like I said, I'm new to this, for lack of a better term, sub-culture, and I don't have a liaison to help me make connections with people who play the game I so desperately want to learn.

I believe that's pretty much how it is. Due to my work schedule, I'm unable to get out on Wednesdays (or most Saturdays :( ) but a friend and I tend to meet at least once a month up there on Mondays during the day. We will be up there next Monday (the 12th) in fact, probably from 11a to sometime in the early afternoon. We've had other X-Wing players show up around the same time before, and they'll either play their own games, or join in our fun. Everyone I've met there are really friendly and helpful. My normal approach at a new store is to chill and watch a game or two to see how people are interacting / whatever, then ask if any of them are interested in a game.

Dropzone is where the old GW Battle Bunker used to be. It's a great staff in the store, most everyone is former GW, but I think they took the "anti-GW" approach to customer service a bit too far. Some times it's difficult to get any staff members to come help, or to offer suggestions on what they stock / play options in store. I've never actually gamed there, so I'm not sure what / where in the store to go.

Okay, thanks again for the reply. I could be at G&S at 11am on Monday the 12th. Would you be willing to let me watch a few of your games and learn a few things?

Sure! I don't know how much you'll learn, as we're relatively new to the game, but it should be entertaining to watch.

I'm very new too so that won't be a problem. How will I know who to say hello to?

Name's Jim, I'll be wearing a NAVY ballcap.

Nice to meet you Jim. My name's Earle, of course. Looking forward to meeting you in person. Thanks for all of the help.

Hey Earle, just letting you know that we won't be meeting up tomorrow, weather and other such stuff. We've planned to try next Monday instead.

Ok, no worries. I'd still like to check out and/or play a game or two next week if you don't mind.

Absolutely!

Jim, what is the status for tomorrow? Still playing?

Glad you were able to make it out today Earle. The 4 space cow list I was up against to start was challenging at first but ultimately I was able to out-maneuver it.

My 4 TIE / 2 Interceptor list still leaves much to be desired though, so lost the second game. I'm hoping to be back in a couple weeks, maybe next time we can try a game!

Space Cow, haha. That's exactly what it looked like.

What were you up against in the second game?

I got my but whooped by three TIE Defenders with stealth device. Brutal.

Absolutely we should get a game soon. I'm generally free during the day since I work at night.

Second game Chris ran Keyan Farlander, Ten Numb, and 3 Bandit Squadron Z-95s. My Imperial action leaves a lot to be desired, so I failed pretty miserably. But it's always a good time.
