Ion Torpedo

By Corver, in X-Wing

I haven't seen much discussion about this new Torp. Is it worth taking? The damage is full so not 1 and each ship in 1 is ioned so it seems pretty good as a swarm buster.

Not sure what ships would be good taking one. Will test on a Tie bomber next game.

I'm planning on flying Nera Dantels with it today with Biggs as a teammate.

I'm hopeful, but we'll see.

I just noticed it wont work on large ships like the ion missile. But u think its value might be hard to judge. If playing against a swarm it will force them to keep away from each other. That alone could be worth the cost.

large ships will be easier to hit though, and this will trigger the effect so if they will think twice before flying any small ships in range one of it.

I use it and its amazing

It's great to use against swarm builds, good for 4-ship builds, but not very good against 3 or less ships. Meta trends are in the wrong direction right now for it to be good competitively, but I expect it would be fine in casual play. It also suffers a bit from the standard problems with ordnance.

I think 5pts is a bit much but 4 would have made the proton torp look really bad!

Cool card, but like other torps I feel it costs too much for any practical play advantage.

It could be fun to pair it with Dace Bonearm (Highest PS Scum Hawk pilot) to have your pick of which ship suffers his damage (if you get the splash)

It's silly in free-for-alls. Hit one ship, ion lots, run away cackling.

Probably great against Huge ships, also. Ion token + a fair amount of damage.

It could work with bombers. IF I get my measurement right if you come across a close together enemy group head on you can shoot an Ion torpedo at close range 2 and splash some bogeys at range 1. Then drop the bomb and watch the range 1 fly helplessly into the proton bomb range 1 zone. The problem is that you have to be spot on with your range. Those at 2 will not be affected by the bomb because you will drop the bomb 1 movement behind you so they will still be out of range. If you can splash ion on range 1 those guys will be in trouble.

However I think Ion Y-wing Bombers will work better than Ion TIE Bombers.

It's utter ****. Underwhelming and expensive and requires TL and F minimum for even possible damage. It spends your TL.

A TIE Bomber or a Slave I (or a Decimator if you're crazy) might have some fun with it in combination with bombs. Ion a group, next turn drop a Proton Bomb so they all fly right over it. Bam, everyone gets hit for a through-Shield critical.

Where does it say Proton Bomb ignores shields?

The bomb deals a face up damage card. Doesn't matter if you have shields or not.

Huh. I've never thought of that. I'd been reading it as "does a critical hit".

Oh it's much, much better than that!

Considering the new hotness is two ship builds, with one inevitably being a bloated turret-whale, these torps seem pretty worthless atm

Since they were packaged in the decimator, I'm assuming FFG was trying to imply they'd be a kind of counter for the supposed weakness turrets have against swarms, but actually using it would require paying attention to the firing arc and lord knows we don't have time for that.

(also costs more than Ysanne or Engine Upgrade and falls into all the typical ordinance traps, which doesn't help matters at all on a ship that makes up 50%+ of a given list)

Would be hilarious to ion a whole formation, then run them all over with a huge ship.

That would be advanced proton torpedoes.

It is underwhelming but all it cost is a target lock. However since you would be spending it to not modify dice you would have to use in carefully if you don't have a focus token as well. The removal o the range 3 extra green dice helps a little but you would want to aim at a low agility ship that (for some odd reason) has a bunch of other ships around it in order to make the most out of it. Being a 1 attack weapon you have to be careful with it.

Other than that you can always buy hit insurance for 1 extra point in the form of munitions failsafe.
