How are you all spreading the word?

By Mikael Hasselstein, in Star Wars: Armada

So, I think that my love of this game will depend on how many people I will get to play it with. In my community, there's tepid anticipation, and I think I'm going to have to be the evangelist for Armada to catch on here.

In order to do that, I've created a Facebook group page that mirrors what others have created for X-Wing in my area.

What are you all doing, if anything?

Mostly word of mouth advertising. I've shared my enthusiasm with friends, family, and gaming groups while trying to play off what they are already interested in that is similar. I've also been sharing any good deals I find with those who have expressed interest to see who I can help buy in before launch.

I haven't yet. Whilst I don't think it will disappoint, I'm going to wait until it actually comes out. Once people at my gaming groups see us flying Star Wars capital ships, I think interest will grow, then I'll try and draw more people into it :)

For some reason, and its not just limited to my gaming club, some people assume that Armada is going to be "X-Wing with bigger ships". A terrible assumption, but not an uncommon one - you only need to read some basic info about the game to quickly realise they are very different games. Once I've played Armada, I will correct them on the error of their ways!

I can't seem to get my local gamers hyped by word of mouth, being too deep into X-wing to really care about some illusive future game, so I think I'll just buy a started box and a couple of ships and bring it to the local game club to play a few games and see if I can get the fire going.

I'm actually taking this to the next level as of this week. I've called ALL of the gaming stores in my area to see who's ordering a tournament kit, and then asked who of those is interested in working with a group of local gamers to get the word out. From that I found one store that is willing to work with us and form a Star Wars Armada club of sorts. Members of the club will receive discounts on miniatures similar to what Miniature Market gives (if we can get enough people involved), and the club I'm founding will in return promote this particularly helpful store. I guess we've almost set up a sponsorship of sorts. What I'll be doing over the next two days as a result is starting a Facebook page for Armada specifically at this store, and getting the small group of us who are interested in playing to start promoting the game and store simultaneously. Hopefully by release, this will leave us with a nice little following and community that meets regularly. For anyone reading this, this is all taking place in the Salt Lake City, UT area. I'll edit this post when I've got the Facebook page up and running.

I've just been wearing a sandwichboard that reads "The End Is Near!"....

I'm with Gost Dancer I am waiting for the game to be released. People just don't seem to get too excited unless they can see the product live.

That's a good plan. I've asked one store in my area (the one I consider 'home' slightly more than the others), and they may have ordered the kit. I think I'll take your cue and ask the others as well, just to put it on their radar that there's community interest, if nothing else.

If I'm correct, the deadline for applying for a Spring tournament kit is already past. That's what it says on this page anyway. It's kind of awkward, because there's probably not going to be a lot of spring left when the core set hits the shelves.

Do any of you have any experience with tournaments and newly-released games?

I'm good friends with the owner of my FLGS, and i've agreed to run demo games for him as soon as his tock comes in (before if i somehow get stuff first). We#re also planning to run a large multiplayer introduction game a week after it arrives.

At the moment thats the lot (though I cant stop yammering about it to everyone either), but i'll be thinking of as many ideas as possible for my local area!

That is correct. I spoke with Kyle in the FFG sales department yesterday and he is happy to put any store interested in ordering a tournament kit on the reserve list, but no promises at this point. One thing he pointed out was that this far west (and I'm not as far as you are) we might have better luck with one of the suppliers your local shop may order from. I actually just started discussing a partnership of sorts with a store that has two kits on order (thanks to having two stores) and it looks like this is going to work out really well.
