Let talk about Trouble Brewing!

By Desslok, in Game Masters

I'm thinking of strip-mining the game at the back of the core book. It's not a bad game, considering that it's meant more to go "Hey, here's what the game is like" more than be a fully fleshed out adventure, but I find it a little light and illogical in places. So I'm overhauling and re-writing it to suit my tastes and my group.

And I thought I'd ask you guys, see what you did to the game, what changes you made, bits you dropped, bits you added, stuff that didn't make sense and scenes that didn't survive contact with the enemy.

I left the second part of the adventure pretty much as is. It is a good dungeon crawl and sort of a murder mystery. I had the players completely sold on the Droid's story of Pirates taking over the mine

The biggest change was that I let the Supervisor droid use Scathing tirade over the loudspeakers and had all sorts of Marxist quotes ready with droid twists.

My favorite was the macabre scene where the players find the cook droid, and dialogue went something like this

Coo-Coo-1: High there, welcome to the galley, what a wonderful morning this is Can I get you some toast?

PLayer: uh. no

Coo-Coo-1: Muffins?

PLayer: nah

Coo-Coo-1: tea cakes, buns, baps, baguettes, bagels, croissants, crumpets, pancakes, potato cakes, hot cross buns, or flapjacks!"

Player: no

Coo-Coo-1: AH, so you are a Waffle man!

Hmm. This sounds suspiciously like the dialogue from Talkie the Toaster on Red Dwarf. ;)

Not that this is a bad thing, because that’s a great source of material, it just sounds familiar.

Yeah, that's Talkie Toaster. The character in Red Dwarf, that is, as opposed to the Forum member who uses the same moniker... :)

Did the Cook droid have a tragic accident involving a waste disposal and a 14lb lump hammer?

Almost the same dialogue. :) That is kind of the character I channeled for the oblivious cook droid.

"Want some Creamed Rishi Corn soup with some leftover Bantha meat?” “Darvis absolutly loves it, he isn't even using a spoon!" (darvis was the one who was killed and His face ended up falling into the soup bowl

The Characters pretty much considered him scenery and didn't do anything when they realized the droid was clueless. But i did have the Cook droid incorrectly refer to them as other miners.

As far as the First scene. You could easily replace the Hutt with some other character that Was wealthy and won the Deed in venture, and is trying to quickly liquidate the asset for the credits. For my game it was a Noble with a gambling addiction that was near broke, and one of the other players went into debt. The Scene played out in the Docking area where the rent-a-thugs he had were attacked by another group of rent-a-thugs who got stiffed be the nobe

Our group has a rotating GM, but I happen to have been the GM for that one. I actually ran it fairly straight, at least in the beginning. I doubled (or tripled) the described size of the city to start with, giving it more of a "Mostly Civilized" feeling. Also increased the number of minions / enemies around; though that was mostly because I have a huge group (8 PC & 4 NPC crew). I made the ship being used in the Asteroid base completely useless, to keep the players from salvaging it. (They still took the two Binary Load Lifters however - who have become wonderful recurrent NPC crew members)

There are plenty of places for the players to take other rails then the ones the adventure assumes, but it's not hard to keep the NPCs moving in the background and make sure the players end up in the right place in the end.

Overall, it was a fun session.

Odd... Ask about Trouble Brewing and a Debts to Pay discussion breaks out!

I was thinking the same thing!

I ended up making only a few small changes to this one to integrate into my campaign's story.

One of my PCs is playing a droid, and his 'in' to the party was that he was a friend/companion of R4/J8. He joined the party when they encountered him and J8 being ambushed by Dobah's goons. As a result, I made the J8 droid save-able (badly damaged and near 'death' but the PC Mechanic in the party was able to repair him enough to keep him online). Both droids have become recurring NPCs.

The mission was given to the PCs by an ISB agent who is the BBG of the campaign; half of the party started off as contractors on the agent's payroll who would eventually have a change of heart. Pursuant to that, I made Dobah himself a bit more noble/likeable than he's written in TB, though still a bad guy.

Those are the changes I made. However, the PCs went off-book of their own accord early and often. It ended up taking about a half-dozen sessions to wrap it up satisfactorily, ending with Dobah's crew turning on him after he successfully brokered a deal with the PCs, and his asteroid hideout exploding dramatically due to PC actions.

I use my computer connected to my TV to GM, so I can easily show the dice app, pictures, maps, a crawl at the beginning. I edited the Formos space port map in photoshop and added a couple locations for the PC's to visit and displayed it on the TV. Each of the locations on the Formos map had one of the optional encounters tied to it.

The second thing I ran into was the lack of information regarding who the PC's could interact with at the imperial barracks. I displayed the bountyboard image on my tv for everyone to see which says "For more information, contact any local representatives of Imperial authority." - The adventure doesn't include any information on NPCs to interact with. My players decided that a 10k bounty was a lot better than a 5k bounty and opted to get more info.

One of my players even said "Look, it says for more info contact local representatives!" and I thought "ah crap... I didnt think of that" and I had to wing it. Of course, Snoo set them straight on redeeming a bounty with the Imps.

Additionally, I opted to have the R4 droid accompany them to capture Doubah. It didnt make sense to me that he would just run off to plot his own revenge on Doubah. It seems like he would want to help the band of mercenaries that just killed Daro's gang to also bring Doubah to justice.

I turned Doubah's Ship into an asteroid base - I didn't want to deal with the PC's attempting to steal it, plus I feel it would give them more room to fight.

I added glowing poisonous mushrooms, bottomless chasms, and motion alarms (that could alert Doubah's crew) to the mynock encounter.

Finally, the Hutt that put the bounty up on Doubah was Thakba Besadii Diori, which also happens to be the Hutt that lost a bet with Bargo in the Debts to Pay adventure. I think I'm going to get rid of Bargos completely, and just have Thakba Besadii Diori hire them directly as a segue into Debts to Pay.

Here's the Formos map with my adjustments... (I gave it the purplish filter to match the other picture and cloudy description)
